Ruth was born April 19, 1922 in Provo, Utah to Claudis Hilton Burch and Annie Ferguson Burch. She grew up in Provo, Pleasant Grove and finally settled in American Fork where she graduated from American Fork High School. On September 26, 1941 she married her sweetheart, Joey P. Brooks, their marriage was later solemnized in the St. George Temple on July 18, 1964. She found great joy in spending time with her family, making quilts, gardening, crocheting and helping to take care of many great grandchildren at least once a week. Her many talents were shared with family, friends and many others, including her projects for the Humanitarian Services. All who knew her appreciated and loved her and were blessed to know her. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she served in many positions. She has truly touched the lives of all with whom she came in contact, especially her family, the unconditional love and compassion that she gave was a blessing to all. Ruth is survived by her children, Kent (Pat) of Las Vegas, Bill (Sharon) of Salt Lake City and Mary Jo Greenwood (Mike) of American Fork, 13 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, sisters Vivian Liljegren of Provo, Barbara Douglas of American Fork, brothers, Sterling Burch of Pleasant Grove, Stanley Burch of American Fork, and a sister-in-law Flora Gurney of Lehi. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son Craig D. Brooks and 9 brothers and sisters, Max, Merrill, Douglas, Mary, Fern, Bessie, Leone, Jenny and Helen. The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the wonderful people at Berkshire and Alpine Valley Care Centers for the excellent care that was provided for her. Interment, American Fork City Cemetery. Published in the Daily Herald on 2/17/2005. Bushman, Keith Lehi - Henry Keith Bushman, age 83 of Lehi, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2005 at his home of cancer. He was born July 2, 1921 in Lehi, Utah, son of John Martin and Elfreda Farquharson Bushman. He married Ann Budge, May 21, 1948 in the Salt Lake Temple. They were later divorced. He married LaRille Johnson Madsen, Sept. 4, 1989 in Lindon, Utah. He served an LDS Mission in Northern California and then served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Germany. He graduated from Utah State University and went on to receive his masters degree. Keith was a school teacher and farmer, having retired from the Alpine School District in 1983, He taught drivers' education, business, and distributive education. He served in the LDS Church as a Primary teacher, Sunday School President and teacher, a Home Teacher, and was a High Priest. As Keith prepared to leave this life, his 40th great-grandchild had arrived just a few hours earlier. He is survived by his wife, LaRille of Lehi; two sons and two daughters, John (Dixie)Bushman, Kent (Shauna) Bushman, and Nancy (Carl) Clark, all of Lehi; Mary (Kim) Campbell, Idaho Falls, ID; 8 step-children, Marie Madsen, Lehi; Suzanne (Rocky) Stone, Highland; David (Joy) Madsen, Layton; Dawn (Jim) Bjarnson, West Jordan; Lisa (Gary) Twitchell, Heber City; Lorie (Larry) Bendall, Pleasant Grove; Amy (Scott) Butterfield, Seattle, WA; James (Olivia) Madsen, Lehi. Also survived by 40 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren, a brother, Wayne Bushman, Payson, and sister, Ludene Peterson, Lehi. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, John Lloyd, and his sister, Ilah Hadfield. Colonel, loving husband, father, brother, grandpa, and outstanding pilot, genealogist, teacher, writer and historian died peacefully at his home in Orem, Utah, on 14 February 2005, of causes incident to old age and diabetes. He was surrounded by his loving and caring family. Lowell was born on 18 February 1922, in Bancroft, Idaho, the second child of Joseph C. and Myrtle E. Call. He grew up as a farm boy in Bancroft, Idaho, and graduated from North Gem High School. He had a passion for airplanes and flying and pursued his interest through the Army Air Corps program and earned his "silver wings" in February 1945. While in training at Burbank, California, he proposed to his high school sweetheart, Carolyn Johnson, via the mail, drove home when she accepted, married her in the Logan LDS Temple on 15 January 1942, and returned with her to California. Lowell was on his way to England to fly the B-17 Bomber when WW II ended. After his release, Lowell took his family and headed for BYU to complete his education. He went on to earn a Baccalaureate Degree in Secondary Education and later a Master Degree in Church Education. He was called to active service again in the newly formed United States Air Force in 1947, and ended his military career some 23 years later. He flew combat missions in the Korean Conflict and the Viet Nam War and taught AFROTC at Brigham Young and Oklahoma State Universities. During that time he raised a family of eight children living in Asia, Europe and most places in between. After retiring from active military service, he developed an aviation science course at Orem High School, taught there for 11 years and instilled the same love of airplanes and flying to hundreds of his students. Lowell also had a passion for genealogy and history which he pursued equally with his flying, teaching and family. In 1999, Lowell signed an Instrument of Gift agreement with Brigham Young University to donate over 200 volumes of his history and genealogy work, to include a 2 volume history of the Flying Tigers of Orem High School, to the Special Collections area of the Harold B. Lee Library. Lowell was "second to none" in keeping a journal! He was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings that uplifted him and blessed the lives of those around him. In their senior years, Lowell and Carolyn served as missionaries for 22 months in South Africa. Lowell is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Myrtle Call, two brothers, Joseph and John, a sister, Betty Jane and his wife of 63 years, Carolyn Call. He is survived by two brothers, Melvin Call, Idaho Falls, ID. and Clarence Call, Sacramento, CA; two sisters, Myrtle Cook and Erla Mae Knudsen, both of Provo, Utah; his step-mother, Urilla Tolman Call and her children, Gerald, Rosco, Marvin, Myrtle Rae, Ronald and Kathleen; a sister-in-law, Gwen Raymond; along with his eight children, 26 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Lowell's children include: Janene and William Everitt, Wellsville, Scott and Victoria Call, Centerville, Marlae and Michael Rindlisbacher, Orem, Clair and Sandy Call, Orem, Lowell Mont Call, Orem, Val and Carrie Call, Sandy, Jacqulyn Olsen, Orem, and Lori Waters, Salt Lake City, all of Utah. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, 19 February 2005, at 11:00 a.m. in the Canyon View LDS Chapel, 1090 North 400 East, Orem, Utah. Carr, Marie Youd Marie Youd Carr passed away on February 13, 2005 surrounded by her family, after struggling with a lingering illness. She was born on October 1, 1935 to John Ivan Youd and Matilda Petersen in Lake Shore. She was the youngest in a family of seven children and has lived her entire life in Lake Shore. She married Glade Allen Carr in the Salt Lake Temple on June 24, 1953. Their home was blessed with six children and she spent her life making a loving and beautiful home for her family. Marie enjoyed using her creative talents cooking many memorable dishes, especially her famous cookies and making gifts for her family and friends. Many quilts, afghans, doilies, wood projects and clothing items have been shared with those she loved. Her family has since grown to include 24 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in many positions including Relief Society President and member of many auxiliary presidencies. She served for a year with her husband in the Indiana, Indianapolis Mission. Her most current church service was as a Stake Missionary serving at the Bishop's Storehouse. Marie's strong testimony of the gospel was shared with others freely and sincerely. She is survived by her husband of 51 years and her children, Cindy (James) Makai, Dennis (Donette) Carr, both of Lake Shore, Darla (Tom) Palkki of Sweet Home, Oregon, Rod (JaneAnn) Carr of West Mountain, Ivan (Lisa) Carr of Blanding, and Allen (Gunchariga) Carr of Lake Shore. She is also survived by three brothers, Max (Marie) Youd of Spanish Fork, Lynn (Beverly) Youd of Lake Shore, and Glen (Norma) Youd of Orem. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Wayne, sisters Isabel and Lois, and three grandchildren. Esplin, Rexine Provo, Utah - Rexine Esplin, age 53, passed away at her home in Provo, Utah. She was born October 1, 1951 in Kanab, Utah to Merlynn Adams and David Howard Esplin, the oldest of three children. Survivors include daughter Rikki (Tim) Proctor of Pleasant Grove, Utah; son Ryan (Shawna) Pugmire of Orem, Utah; mother Merlynn "Pinky" Esplin of Las Vegas, Nevada; brother Clayton H. Esplin of Kanab, Utah; and five grandchildren, Emma, Miranda, Cassity, and Andrew Proctor, and Mallory Pugmire. She was preceded in death by her father Howard Esplin and sister Jillynn Esplin. Funeral services will be held Friday, February 18, 2005 at 10:00 AM in the Geneva Heights LDS Stake Center, 546 N. 500 W., Orem. Burial will be in the Kanab Utah Cemetery. Foil, Charles Herman "Skip" Charles Herman (Skip) Foil, Sr. was a man who loved his god, his country, and his family. Skip brought joy into everyone's life from the moment of his birth on January 2, 1925 in Winston-Salem, NC until his death on February 14, 2005. Skip was born to Anna Wilhelmina Pulfrich and Roger Robert Foil, but was raised by his loving and kind stepfather, Pete Pearson, of whom he always felt of as dad. He always loved his home of Charleston, SC and longed to return there. Skip was married to his loving and devoted wife, Aldwyth (Steve) Foil for 57 precious years. Together Skip and Aldwyth brought forth in this world and raised a loving family: Vickie (Brent) Wallace, Wendy (Rich) Burke, Charles (Jing) Foil, Elayne (Jay) Broadhead, and Veldon (Brenda) Foil. He cherished his two surviving sisters: Midget Nesbit and Norma Knight. And he loved his family which grew to include 19 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren. He never forgot those who went before him: his brothers: Carson and Bernard Foil; his sister: Mary Ann Ashfield; and a grandson: Veldon Gene Foil. Our husband and father loved life and took pleasure in all the little things God had blessed him with. He took every opportunity to fish and he found lots of opportunities. He adored flowers and gardening, travel, and coin collecting. He had a special place in his heart for his "little redhead" Star, his dog. He loved his God and served as a Deacon in the Pleasant Grove First Baptist Church. He loved his country and served it proudly as a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Friday, February 18, 2005 in the Battle Creek 2nd Ward (1250 East 200 S.) in Pleasant Grove. Gates, Charles Ewry Charles Ewry Gates Our beloved Chuck, Dad, Grandpa, passed away on February 15, 2005, at his home in Payson, Utah, with his beloved Doris at his side. Chuck was born May 12, 1913, in Creede, Colorado, to Alfred and Alice Gates. He married Doris Fisher on July 15, 1944, in Long Beach, California. They raised two children: Harry Charles (Peggy) Gates of Beaver Dam, AZ; and Charlene Ann Gates of Orem, Utah. Chuck lived in Medicine Bow, Wyoming from 1924-1964. He graduated from high school in 1932 as valedictorian. He served in the US Marine Corp from 1940-1946, during World War II, 3 years of which were in the South Pacific. He was a lifetime member of the Elks, the American Legion, the Marine Corp League, and the Lions Club. He organized the Volunteer Fire Department and served as town marshal. He was an official basketball referee and also played until he was 50. They moved to Heber City in 1964 and then to Payson in 1991. Most of all he was a dedicated family man-the best husband, Dad, and Grandpa Great ever. Survived by wife Doris of 60 years; daughter Charlene; son Harry, brother Alan; 4 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by parents; brothers Harry and Jack, granddaughter Kelly Ann Gates, great-granddaughter Grace Ann Horrocks. A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 18, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. in the Payson Utah South Stake Center, 711 South 600 East, with a viewing at 10:00 a.m. at the same location. Hall, Kaye Varney Roberta Kaye Varney Hall, 67, of American Fork, passed away Tuesday, February 15, 2005 surrounded by her family after a short battle with stomach cancer. She was born July 13, 1937 in American Fork to Neldon Earl and Belva Batty Varney. She married her sweetheart, Robert K. Hall, on September 5, 1958 in American Fork. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Provo LDS Temple on June 25, 1975. Kaye grew up in American Fork and graduated from American Fork High School and LDS Seminary. She was active in the Pep Club and K.J. Bird's Marching Band. She attended BYU and USU. Bob and Kaye served an LDS Mission in the Nauvoo, Illinois Restoration Mission where they developed a tremendous love for the Nauvoo Heritage and met lifelong friends. Her greatest joy in life was being surrounded by her family and friends and spending time with her grandchildren. She was selfless in her willingness to serve others. She served faithfully as the Relief Society, Young Women's and Primary President among many other church callings. She was a proud member of the Mayflower Society and loved doing family genealogy. She had many talents and enjoyed flower gardening and making new friends. She had a special gift of making people feel loved and wanted. Survived by her husband, children, Kurt (Cindy) Hall of Highland, Torri (John) Bowcut of Highland, Nicole (Chris) Hansen of Lindon, and Jason (Angela) Hall of American Fork, 12 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, sister, Jill (Craig) Roberts of American Fork, brother, Gary Varney of New Mexico. She was born July 15, 1978, in Provo to Jay Lynn Kirchoff and Laura Lyn Johnson. Brea had a strong love for her children and dedicated her life to them. She was a hardworking, independent, beautiful person. She was kind, generous and always put others before herself. She had a special bond with her younger brothers PJ and Joey. Brea was very spiritual and had a great appreciation for all God's creations. She loved music, collecting rocks, and being with her family and friends. She worked at Flanagan's Inn in Springdale where she leaves behind many friends. Brea is survived by her children: Taylor (10), Tori (9), Jesse McCoy (7), and Brylee (4); parents: Laura Johnson, Jay (Rickey) Kirchoff and Gary (Pam) Vier; 5 brothers and 3 sisters; Shane (Treasa) Colunga, Garritt Kirchoff, Boudy (Tiffany) Vier, Joey Anderson, PJ Peterson, Britnie (Chad) Wolske, Paulina Colunga, and Shasta (Lester) Patridge; grandparents: Sandra and Allen Weatherspoon, Lawrence and Madaline Vier and many uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her uncle Loren Johnson, grandfather Gary Johnson and 2 nephews. Special thanks to her best friend and sister in life Kimberly Mason. Mecham, John Lewis "Jack" John (Jack) Lewis Mecham has met up once again with the love of his life, his darling wife Mary, on February 8, 2005 after a bout with cancer. He was born July 3, 1915 to Jonathan and Eva Mecham. Jack lived all of his 89 years in Utah, spending most of that time raising numerous crops, working his ranch and inventing all kinds of gadgets over the years. He loved hiking any and every hill around, hunting, caring for his horses and being a great grandpa to his many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He married Mary Elizabeth LaBard on September 28, 1951. Jack was a farmer/rancher and worked as a heavy equipment operator for Orem City for 17 years. He and Mary raised their family in Utah County and then headed to Veyo to live out their years working the land. Jack was an extremely brilliant man who read every book he could find on geology and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. His parents, sister Faye and wife Mary all preceded him in death. Jack is survived by their five children, Karen (Dennis) Willden, Kent, WA; John (Jaye) Mecham, Midvale, UT; LaDean (Ron) Cox, Las Vegas, NV; Jim (Tracey), Springville, UT; and Don (Cindy) Mecham, Elk Ridge, UT, and his brother Clyde Mecham. Jack is also survived by his 19 grandchildren:Chad, Ryan, Tyler, Cameron, Melissa, Mary, Jonathan, Brandon, Rikki, Ronnie, Kimberly, David, Alyssa,Christopher,Kevin,ShaNelle, Bridger, Hayley and Nikki. Nielsen, Gladys Mae Bonnett Gladys Mae Bonnett Nielsen November 18, 1911 to February 14, 2005 Mae died on Valentines Day, February 14, 2005 of natural causes in St. George, Utah. She was born November 18, 1911 in Provo, Utah. She was the daughter of Clement Julius and Mary Loisa Fausett Bonnett. Mae married B. Leroy Nielsen on August 3, 1933 in Orem, Utah and they were later sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple March 28, 1951. Together they operated a fruit farm on Carterville Road in Orem for over 40 years. She is survived by her four children, LaDean Juber of St. George, Utah, Robert LeRoy Nielsen of Lindon, Utah, Carol Lynn Cox of Delta, Utah, and Kathleen Harding of Alpine, Utah. A brother Bert Bonnett of California, and her sister Norma Beasley of Orem, Utah, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers Roy and Dean, and her sister Hazel Clark. Mae was an active member of the LDS Church and served in the Primary, Relief Society, Sunday School as well as in the Provo Temple. She moved to St. George shortly after the passing of her best friend and husband, LeRoy. Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 19, 2005 at Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary 495 South State Street in Orem. Friends and family may call from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm Friday night at the mortuary and 1 hour prior to services. Interment will be at the Orem City Cemetery 1500 North 800 East in Orem.
