He was born September 9, 1924, in Moab, to William Carl Berry and Leah Sommerville. He is survived by and was a devoted husband to Helen, and a loving and dedicated father to their three children: Linda Roberts (Dean), Douglas Berry (Lori), Julie Slaugh (Leigh). He was a great example to his 14 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and all who knew him. He had a great athletic career, graduating from Carbon High where he excelled in football, basketball, baseball, and track. He was a Veteran of WWII, serving in the North and South Pacific as a naval gunner on various ships. He attended BYU, where he won all-conference honors as a halfback on the football team, and pitched for the Cougar baseball team. He was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in 1951. He became an All-Pro defensive back and has been inducted into the BYU and Utah Sports Hall of Fame. He was recognized as one of Utah s best athletes of the century. After retiring from football, he had a successful career with U.S. Steel and Coastal Chemical Corporation. Rex was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving as bishop, on the high council, and in many other callings. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Blaine and Burke; and his sisters, Merlene and Norma. Funeral services will be Thursday, July 7, at Noon, at the LDS Chapel, 3500 North 180 East, Provo. Family and friends may call Wednesday, July 6, from 6-8 p.m., at the same location; and, Thursday, from 10:30 a.m. until time for the service. Interment at Mountain View Memorial Cemetery. Published in the Daily Herald from 7/5/2005 - 7/6/2005. Boren, Tamara Johnson Tamara Johnson Boren Tamara Johnson Boren died Thursday, June 30, 2005, in her home surrounded by her family. She had fought a valiant battle against Amyloidosis, but finally succumbed to complications from a stem cell transplant. Tamara was born and raised in Utah and chose to raise her eight children in the Utah Valley area that she loved. While studying at BYU, she met and married Neldon Boren. College was put on hold, but the learning and working continued while she diligently raised her children. Many will remember Tamara as a loving babysitter, a kind friend, and a caring teacher. But most of all, she will be known as a "Piecemaker" because of her love of creating and sharing her beautiful quilts. She spent many hours sharing her talents with others as she taught classes and served on the boards of, and as the president of, both the Utah Valley and Utah State Quilt Guilds. Tamara was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served diligently in various ward and stake callings in Primary, Young Women, and Relief Society. Tamara is survived by her husband, Neldon G. Boren; her eight children: Sydna Zilm (Richard), Mesa, Arizona; Heather Judd (Mark), Cedar City, Utah; Gail Boren, Ossining, New York; and Fawn Murray (Nathan), Jennifer Boren, Heidi Lisonbee (John), Bryan Boren (Amanda), and Andrew Boren (Diana), all of Orem, Utah; ten grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; her brother, J. Eric Johnson; and sisters, Penny Walbom and Margo Platt. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Sidney and Elma Tingey Johnson. A viewing will be held Wednesday, July 6, from 6-8 p.m., at the Walker Sanderson Funeral Home, 646 E. 800 North, Orem, Utah. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 7, at 11 a.m., at the Cascade Stake Center, 481 E. Center Street, Orem, Utah, with a viewing just prior to services, from 9:45-10:45 a.m. Tamara will be entombed in Orem City Cemetery following the funeral service. Gillespie, Reed Giles Reed Giles Gillespie Our beloved father and grandfather, Reed Giles Gillespie, has been reunited with his eternal sweetheart, Fae, after 23 years of loving anticipation. Reed passed away July 3, 2005, at his home of 61 years in Orem. He was born June 18, 1919, in Provo, Utah (Edgemont Bench), a son of Sharp Claud and Eva Petrea Giles Gillespie. He married the love of his life, Fae Bunnell, on November 28, 1944, in the Salt lake City LDS Temple. Fae passed away September 7, 1982. Reed was raised in Orem and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1938. He then served an LDS Mission to the Hawaiian Islands in 1939. He worked as a fruit grower; and, as a maintenance technician for 38 years for Alpine School District. Reed was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in many callings, including ward clerk, stake Sunday School superintendent, primary worker in various capacities; and, he served as an ordinance worker in the Provo Temple for several years. Our father and grandfather was a loving and kind man who was generous with his love and encouragement. He taught by example. He was proud of his family and took pride in the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. In his final illness, he taught us faith and enduring to the end. Survivors include his three children: Cathy and William Delaney, of Orem; Jane and Michael Tervort, of Green River, Wyoming; and Daryl and Lisa Gillespie, of Shelley, Idaho. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and a sister, Mary (Spencer) Hunn, of Orem. Reed was preceded in death by his loving wife, Fae, his parents, two brothers, Wilford and Robert and, two sisters, Petrea and Jean. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 7, 2005, at 11 a.m., in the Cascade Ward Chapel, 1051 East 200 North in Orem. A viewing will be held Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at the Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary, 495 South State Street, Orem; and also, Thursday, one hour prior to the services at the ward chapel. Mecham, Elsie Julia Elsie Julia Mecham Elsie Julia Ogren Mecham, age 84, passed away Saturday, July 2, 2005, at Mountain View Hospital. She was born December 26, 1920, at Tooele, Utah, a daughter of Carl Hugo and Johanna Willamena Swensen Ogren. She married John Frank Mecham, November 12, 1959, at Provo, Utah. He preceded her in death, January 6, 1961. Elsie was a great seamstress and also enjoyed crocheting. She will be missed by everyone. Survivors include two sons and four daughters: John Carl (Pat) Mecham, Vernal; Joseph Francis (Rosella) Mecham, Montana; Dorothy Jean (Jack) Keisel, and Joann Jeffs, all of Payson; Janet Lynn Mecham, Judy Rae Mecham, Las Vegas; 16 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Two grandchildren preceded her in death. Graveside services will be Wednesday, July 6, 2005, 11:00 a.m., at the Springville Evergreen Cemetery, 1997 South 400 East, under the direction of Walker Mortuary in Payson.
