His long life included many personal and professional accomplishments. He was born December 23, 1918 in Fairview, Wyoming to Alfred and Madeline Hopkin. He received his education on the farm, at Star Valley High School, the University of Wyoming and Iowa State University, from which he received a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics. He married Bonita Gardner in 1943 and together they reared a family of 5 children. During World War II, he served in the Army, seeing action in the Philippines and Japan while earning the rank of captain. After a brief teaching appointment at the University of Wyoming, he moved his young family to Palo Alto, California in 1955, where he worked for the Bank of America, eventually achieving the rank of Senior Vice President. Leaving the bank in 1967, he first accepted a professorship at the University of Illinois before moving to College Station, Texas, to become the Stiles Professor and Department Chair of Agricultural Finance at Texas A&M. He remained there until his retirement in 1988. He served as a consultant for the National Cattlemen's Association and the foreign governments of Saudi Arabia, Kenya, and Argentina; he led agricultural delegations to the Soviet Union and China. On several occasions he testified before congressional committees on agricultural matters. An active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, John served a mission to the East Central States Mission. He served as bishop in Laramie, Wyoming, Palo Alto, California, and College Station, Texas; as counselor in the Stake Presidency in Champagne, Illinois, and as a Stake Patriarch in the Austin Texas and Utah Cascade stakes. But his most memorable service came as a Sr. Aaronic advisor in Palo Alto, when he helped several men turn around their lives and take their families to the temple. He and Bonita served as temple missionaries in the Dallas, Texas, San Diego, and Mt. Timpanogos Temples. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Tana, a son, Mark, his wife of 60 years, Bonita, and his second wife, Nan, with whom he shared a brief but idyllic relationship until her untimely passing only a month ago. He is survived by two sisters, Mable Nield of Logan and Karli Brown of Salt Lake City; three sons and their wives, Arden and Lorraine of Orem, Utah, Kerry and Marriane of Needham, Massachusetts, and Jeff and Nancy of Rexburg, Idaho; a son-in-law and his wife, John and Marcia Dow of Escondido, California, and Mark's companion, Meurice Jackson, of Arlington, Texas, 24 grandchildren, and 34 great-grandchildren. Of his life he once said that growing up with such low expectations each new success caught him by surprise. But the longer he lived, the more his accomplishments paled in comparison to the rich associations he had with his loved ones. He possessed a keen sense of humor that enlivened all of his associations and will, no doubt, bring smiles to those awaiting him on the other side.
