He will be greatly missed by his family and friends, but we rejoice in the knowledge that he is with his eternal companion, our mother Elizabeth. John was his mother's valentine, born on February 14, 1922, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the youngest of five children born to Betsy Ellefsen and Hyrum Joseph Amundsen Sr. His family moved to California when he was young, and he spent most of his life in Bakersfield, California, where he met and married the love of his life, Elizabeth Frances Gage and raised their four children during their 42 years of marriage. Our mother preceded him in death, on June 12, 1989, and it has been a long, lonely time for Dad since she left. John served proudly in the 24th INF Division, 3rd Engineers in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. He participated in 3 D-day landings and honorably served overseas for 4 years. Dad loved his job as a petroleum engineer and worked in oilfields all over the US, but most often in Wyoming and California, where he made many friends. A lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Dad served honorably in many callings, including 12 years as a temple worker in the Los Angeles temple. As the son of Norwegian immigrants he was always proud of his heritage and culture, and included his children and grandchildren in trips to Norway to see the fjords his mother had talked about. His love of travel and adventure took him all over the United States, Europe, The South Pacific, South America and China, where he climbed the Great Wall in his seventies. After his wife died, these trips were always with family members, so we have many happy memories of our traveling companion. Dad was unfailingly kind and generous, and above all, honest. He was always available to his children and grandchildren when we needed someone to talk to, and was always willing to give us the benefit of his experience and whatever else we needed. The phrase "Kyss meg" will always be associated with Grandpa. John is survived by his four children, John Amundsen Jr. (Jonell), Karen Amundsen (Neal Ostler), Michael Amundsen (Karen), and Kathy Winn (Clive); his brother Hyrum Amundsen Jr., twenty-three grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
