Toyn, Thomas David Thomas David Toyn, Col. USAF Retired Thomas D. Toyn passed away October 12, 2005, in Orange, California. Born October 14, 1920, in Ogden, Utah, he was the fourth of nine children born to Alma Harry Toyn and Myrtle Alice Hart. Tommy (as he was known in his youth) attended school in Ogden and graduated from Ogden High School in 1938. He participated in football, basketball, track, and Jr. ROTC. He was the yearbook photographer and the president of the Alpha Sigma social club. He was a hard worker and worked various jobs in his teens picking cherries, beans; and, one painful session of thinning sugar beets, which cured him of that. From the summer of 1937 to 1941, he was an usher and then assistant doorman at the Paramount Theater in Ogden earning 25› and then 35› per hour. That was sufficient to provide for his self-support, dating and attendance at Weber College, where he met his first wife, Mary Elizabeth Allen, of Brigham City. In May 1940, he graduated from Weber College with an Associate Degree and a private pilot's license via the first U.S. Government civilian pilot training program at Weber. Tom began his military career in December, 1941, when he was accepted for the Army Air Corps pilot training program at Cal-Aero Academy in Ontario, California, from which he graduated in June, 1942. "TD" (as his military buddies called him) was assigned to the new 92nd Fighter Squadron, 81st Fighter Group at Muroc Army Air Base, California (now Edwards AFB), flying P-39's and P-38's. The 92nd Fighter Squadron was assigned to the Tunisian campaign in North Africa, where they provided air cover for convoys in the Mediterranean and Algerian bases. In December 1943, after flying his plane (which he named "Mary 1-2-3") for 250 combat hours and 110 combat missions, he returned to the U.S. and spent the remaining period, until the end of WWII, training replacement fighter pilots. This was the beginning of a 26-year career with the U.S. Air Force. His first 16 years were spent primarily in tactical fighter operation and the last ten years in telecommunications and computerized data communication management. The countries Tom served in after WWII were Germany - where he participated in the Berlin Airlift; Scotland, Japan (Okinawa), Korea, and Canada. In addition, he had stateside assignments in Florida, Texas, New Mexico, Illinois, California, Washington, and Montana. Colonel Toyn retired from the Air Force in June 1967. Following his retirement, he attended Brigham Young University, where he received his BS in Communications (with a minor in Physics) in 1968; and, his MA in Communications along with a teaching certificate in secondary education in 1969. He was with the Jordan School District at Bingham High and Bingham Middle School as a media coordinator and teacher for 16 years, before retiring again in 1987. Tom spent his life in loving service to those around him. Tom married Mary Elizabeth Allen in the Salt Lake Temple on January 20, 1944. After 21 1 2 years of Multiple Sclerosis, Mary died of colorectal cancer in 1976. In 1984, he married Anna May Patten Jenson Curtis, who died of breast cancer in 1985. In July 1986, Tom and Joann Dorton Henderson were married and sealed in the Provo Temple. She died unexpectedly in 1997. He loved and served these women with unmatched, gentle compassion. But, his service wasn't just to his family. Many friends and strangers were unknowing recipients of his acts of kindness. Tom was active in the LDS Church, where he faithfully fulfilled his many callings. He and Joann served two missions together in the Artesia, New Mexico Mission and the Family History Center at BYU. He also served as an ordinance worker in the Provo Temple. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Alma H. & Myrtle A. Toyn; four sisters: Louise (Lyle) Palmer, Virginia Kerr, LaVon Toyn, and Marjorie Toyn; one brother, Wilson (Bill) Toyn; and a grandson, Christopher Quint Olsen. He is survived by daughters: Katherine Ann Olsen, of LaVerne, California; and Teresa (Terri) Lynn Kirkpatrick (Michael), of Corona, California; two stepsons: James Curtis (Erin), of Sandy, Utah; and Carlyle Curtis (Lisa), of Corvallis, Oregon; one stepdaughter, Claudia Meiners (Dave); three brothers: Robert E. (Joy) Toyn, of Perry, Utah (currently serving a mission in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania); Richard L. (Jean) Toyn, of Farmington, Pennsylvania; and Harold H. (Jeri-Ann) Toyn, of Whittier, California. He was blessed with 21 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. His hobbies included golf, skiing, photography, BYU sports, WWII fighter squadron reunions, traveling in his van, computers and family history. He always expressed his gratitude for the Lord's blessings of family, friends, health, and the gospel. He was proud of his heritage and often spoke of the "good ole' days." He never missed an opportunity to share stories of those times with his grandchildren. He had two mottos: "Dessert First" and "Endure to the End."
