GEORGE -- Dale Kent Hand, born in El Centro, California 6 September 1937, passed quietly away on 18 December 2004 at home in St. George, where he was content. His mother has fond memories of his childhood, saying that he never caused her any grief (until now). He loved music and sang solo at many weddings, graduations, and special occasions. He had many talents, including writing poetry and his beautiful whistling. He was a long-distance runner and a swimmer, winning many competitions. Upon graduation from Corning High School, Dale served in the United States Air Force. After his honorable discharge, he studied English and Psychology at the University of California, Chico, earning a Lifetime Teaching Credential. He lived in Plumas- and Lassen County for the next 33 years keeping busy in his spare time remodeling and constructing homes, working on cars, pickups, and always enjoying the freedom of riding his motorcycle. He loved teaching and the outdoors, and spent many hours working with youth on school outings, youth/church camps, "adopting" fatherless sons for father-son outings, teaching hunter safety, scouting, camping, hiking, and tutoring. He taught gymnastics, keyboarding, and other core subjects to 4th through 8th grade students in Susanville, as well as "at risk" students for several years. During summer break he would substitute teach at a California state prison. Dale had two great loves in life-the gospel and his family. He was converted and then baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in September 1981. He studied, learned, and gained a strong testimony that Jesus Christ is our Savior and Redeemer-that He lives. The Gospel of Jesus Christ completely changed his life-a life of purpose, meaning, and happiness-and he was thereafter always willing to share his new-found secret. He has faith of eternal blessings and wants his posterity to have this faith. He served in many capacities including home teaching (another love), counselor in a bishopric, records clerk, ward and stake missionary, High Priest group leader. Dale Hand met Betty Ellis in 1976 when her son was in his fourth grade class. In March 1988 Dale and Betty were married for time and all eternity in the Logan Temple. He loved his "instant" family. In April 2001 they relocated to Saint George, where they served a mission of service for a year in the St. George Temple, and where Dale continued as a volunteer in the baptistry four hours weekly. Dale is survived by his wife Betty; children Lisa (Brad) Carpenter of Tooele, Utah, and Rick (Angela) Silva of Spanish Fork, Utah; six wonderful grandsons: Tyler and Jeremy Gonzalez, and Michael, Ethan, Aaron, and Elijah Silva; his parents, Robert W. & Pearl M. Powell of Mesa, Arizona; sister, Beverly Jean Stanford of California; and numerous nieces and nephews. His daughter, Becky Denise Hand, and his sister, Carol Lee Guthrie, preceded him in death. Rick has fond memories of attending "Mr. Hand's" class, and his grandsons will remember Grandpa playing with them, allowing them to climb all over him, helping them with their homework, and his genuine love for them. One might think Dale's name was "gum grandpa" because that was often the way he was greeted by his grandsons before they said hello. He loved people, and will be remembered for his dedication, cheerful disposition, a warm smile, his big hugs, integrity, and his willingness to "be there" for friends and family alike. Funeral services will be Wednesday, December 22nd, 11 o'clock at the Middleton Ward Chapel, 860 North Fairway Drive, Washington, Utah. Viewing is scheduled between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. in the Relief Society room. Interment will be at the Tonaquint cemetery in St. George, Utah. Services under the direction of Heideman Mortuary.
