Karen Nielsen was born March 21, 1954 on the Travis Air Force Base near Fairfield, California. She was raised and educated in St. George, Utah where she graduated from Dixie College. Karen married Gary Gott on February 14, 1974 in St. George, Utah. They lived in Austin, Texas before coming to Grand Forks in 1986. Karen owned and operated an Internet company called BusyKnitter.com. She worked well with her hands and enjoyed the pleasure of making things for other people. She is survived by her sons, Niels (Nicolette), Stillwater, MN, Stuart, Bjorn, Forrest (Jessica), and Dylan, all of Grand Forks, ND and Graeme (Jeni), Oxford, CT; her parents; brother Joe (Leslie) Nielsen, Salt Lake City, UT; sisters Diane Meyer, Heidi Raya, Wendy Doyle, and April (Moe) Golchin all of St. George, UT. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at University Lutheran Church of Grand Forks, North Dakota. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service in Amundson Funeral Home of Grand Forks. Visitation will continue for the hour before the service in the church. Originally published April 12, 2005 George Dewey McConkie ST. GEORGE - George Dewey McConkie passed away peacefully on April 10, 2005. He was born April 22, 1940 in Vernal, Utah to Thora and M. Dewey McConkie. George was raised in Tridell, Utah with four sisters and two brothers. He moved to Salt Lake City and graduated from South High School. He attended the University of Utah and Weltech College in Salt Lake City and went on to work at North American Aviation working on the Saturn 5 rocket booster engine, and at the Nevada Test Site for Aerojet General. He spent most of his life working for, then owning a Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise. He was born into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and remained active until his passing. He faithfully served many callings, including serving as second counselor in the Valley View Ward, Sparks, Nevada Bishopric. George is survived by his wife, Lynn, of 24 years; son David (Lynnette) of Kemmerer, WY; daughter Julie of Salt Lake City, daughter Trisha (Craig) of Reno, NV; daughter Lynette (Dustin) of Vernal, son Charles of Reno, NV; daughter Amanda (Cory) of Salt Lake City, sister MaryAnn (Robert) of St. George, sister Carol of Roosevelt, Utah, sister Iris of Logan, Ut, and 20 grandchildren.
