GEORGE, UT - Opal Applegate, 81, passed away April 15, 2005 in St. George, Utah. She was born July 5, 1923 in Wabash, Indiana to Lonie and Callie Paralee Clemons Garner. She married Merritt Leon Applegate on March 2, 1946 in New Waverly, Indiana. Their marriage was solemnized on October 10, 1952 in the Mesa, Arizona Temple. Opal grew up in Peru, Indiana and moved to St. George, Utah in 1974. She was an active member of the LDS church serving as Young Women's President, Relief Society Instructor, Stake Missionary, Gospel Doctrine Teacher and enjoyed Genealogy. She was also a volunteer at Dixie Regional Medical Center as a Pink Lady. She loved to cook. She is survived by her children, Pamela (Cleon) Fowler of St. George, Utah, Craig (Rosamond) Applegate of Santa Clara, Utah, Brett (Sydney) Applegate of Mesa, Arizona and Kirk (Suzanne) Applegate of South Jordan, Utah; 14 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and a brother, Lonie Kent Garner of Indiana. The family wishes to say "Thank You" to the Applegate Hospice and Home Health Care. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 19, 11 a.m., Bloomington LDS 5th Ward Chapel, 200 West Brigham Rd., St. George, Utah. Visitations will be held on Monday, April 18, 7-8 p.m., Metcalf Mortuary, 288 W. St. George Blvd. and Tuesday, 9:30-10:30 a.m., prior to services at the chapel. Originally published April 17, 2005 Spencer Hammond Spencer Hammond, 1911-2005, loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend passed away peacefully Friday, April 15, 2005 with his family around him. Spencer and his wife, Roberta, had a wonderful retirement together in Bloomington, Utah. He was an active member of the Bloomington Country Club where he enjoyed golf, poker and many club activities. He participated in the Utah Senior Games and was an active member of the Lion's Club. Spencer was born and grew up in Providence, Utah. He served in the 32nd Infantry in No. France, Rhineland, and Central Europe as a staff sergeant during WWII. He married Roberta Malmgren in 1938 and they raised their three children in Salt Lake City. Spencer's humor and zest for life will leave a lasting memory to all who knew him. He is survived by his wife, Roberta; son, Blake Hammond (Robin); and two daughters, Kaye Hammond and Vicki Lambert (Robert). He has 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. The family wishes to thank the Wentworth Assisted Living Staff and Care Source Hospice for all their support during this time. GEORGE, Utah - Horace William Jamison, age 94, passed away quietly at home on Friday, April 15, 2005, in St. George. He was born on December 8, 1910, in Cove, Utah, the first of five sons, to William Flavius and Ethel Titensor Jamison. He lived in Pocatello, Idaho until 1923, when his family moved to California. He graduated from Venice High School in Mar Vista, California, then attended UCLA and the University of Southern California Medical School, where he received his MD degree in 1936. He practiced radiology in Los Angeles for the next forty years, except for a four-year-period of military service during WWII at the Santa Ana Army Air Base Regional Hospital. Horace married Bernice Tyler August 27, 1938, in Mar Vista, California and they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple August 11, 1939. Since he was a quiet person and she very outgoing, he loved to have her at his side at church, at social gatherings and in their extensive travels. He also loved to listen to classical music, take photographs, play with his grandchildren and read and condense great books. He completed nine volumes of collected abridgements on a variety of subjects. Surviving family include his wife, Bernice (St. George); three children, Lowell Tyler Jamison (Glendale, CA), Janelle Leona Jamison Jarvis (Provo, UT) and Kent Douglass Jamison (St. George); 17 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two brothers and one half-brother, John P. Jamison (Bountiful, UT), Steven L. Jamison (Los Altos, CA), and Gary Jamison (Huntington Beach, CA). He was preceded in death by two brothers and two half-brothers. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 23, 2005, at 1:00 p.m. at the Bloomington 6th Ward Chapel, 3519 Manzanita Rd., St. George, UT. Family and friends may gather prior to the services from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Chapel. Interment will follow the services at the Tonaquint Cemetery. Originally published April 17, 2005 Myrdith Elder Rice Myrdith Elder Rice, age 76, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on April 16, 2005. Myrt was born May 30, 1928 in Junction, Ut to Oliver Q. And Sadie B. Elder. She fell in love and married her sweetheart Richard O. Rice on August 2, 1948. Later they were sealed for time and all Eternity in the St. George Temple on December 16, 1964. Myrt and Dick are the proud and loving parents of four children; Diana (John) Aswad of SLC, Michael (Christine) Rice of Cedar City, Ut, Susan (Kevin) Tipton of St. George, Ut and Janette (Jeffrey) Robison of Fillmore, Ut. Surviving family includes her husband, Richard, children Diana, Michael, Susan, and Janette. 23 grandchildren, and 29 great grandchildren. Mother, Sadie B. Elder, 99 years young, of Smithfield, Utah, Sisters Jauana (Clair) Spohn of Aloha, Oregon, Valeen (Max) Brady of Yamhill, Oregon, Ronald (Beverly) Elder of Smithfield, Utah, Doral (Rae) Elder of Logan, Utah, and Lorraine (Claron) Mackelprang of Cedar City, Utah. Myrt was a life- long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in a variety of callings and loved to serve, especially with the youth of the church. Myrt had a contagious smile and always known for her overflowing love and kindness. Her loves in life were family, children, growing plants and flowers, cooking and traveling with Dick and family, especially going to Disneyland, She always put others before herself. Her selfless love will be missed. Special thanks to the Cedar 16th ward members, the excellent staff at the Iron Mission Dialysis Center for their love and compassion, beyond the call of duty.
