He was born January 27, 1917 in Washington, Utah to John Adams and Katie Briggs Adams. He served in the army in WWII in Italy, where he was awarded a silver star for bravery. He married Lova Bowler, and their marriage was later solemnized in the St. George temple. He was active for many years in the Washington Lion's Club and the LDS Church. He owned a ranch in the Washington Fields with his brother Don (deceased). He enjoyed hunting, camping, fishing, gardening, playing cards, but most of all, spending time with his family, especially the grandkids. He is survived by Lova, his wife of 59 years and their 3 daughters, LaRae Adams of Ogden, Ut, Sandra (Jim) Shelton of Garland, Ut, and Sherri (Ron) Morrill of Whiterocks, Ut, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Also, his sister Lavonne (Clare) Brooks, and his brother Brice (Gloria) Adams. He is preceded in death by his parents, a sister Lola (Earl) Tobler and 4 brothers, Don (Lorraine), Lloyd (Melba), Shirley (Joyce) and Melvin and a son Gary (Virginia) Houser. Services will be held at Heideman's Mortuary Chapel (please insert appropriate address) on Friday, April 22, 2005. Viewing will begin at 10:00 A.M., and the Funeral will follow at 11:00 A.M. Internment will be at the Washington City Cemetery under the direction of Heideman Mortuary. Originally published April 21, 2005 Lavell Ireland Adams PAROWAN - Lavell Ireland Adams passed away April 6, 2005. She was born February 2, 1912 to Alexander (Alec) James and Nora Page Ireland. Lavell spent her growing up years in Panguitch, St. George, and New Harmony, Utah, Colonial Juarez, Mexico, El Paso, Texas and Thatcher, Arizona. She attended Juarez Academy, Gila College, BYU, and BAC (SUU). She married Harvey Adams February 24, 1934 in Parowan, Utah. Their marriage was solemnized April 18, 1934 in the St. George Temple. Lavell spent the remainder of her life in Parowan, Utah where she raised four children. Lavell will be remembered for her dedicated church service as she served in various organizations especially Y.W. and R.S. She is remembered by her family as a devoted mother and grandmother, for the beautiful gardens, her intricate quilts, and her talent as a storyteller. She is survived by her four children, Conley (Evelyn) Adams, Stuart (Judy) Adams, Marilee (Dennis) Stowell, Shirley (Alan) Felstead, 26 grandchildren, 56 great grandchildren, 7 great-great-grandchildren. He was born January 7, 1918 in Orderville, Utah to Squire Edmund Hepworth and Annie Velta Crofts Hepworth. Keith Grew up in Orderville and attended school there. He always wanted to know how things worked; cars, machinery and building processes. He liked to learn by experimenting, in fact, his grandpa Crofts used to say, "Go find Keith and tell him to quit." He learned the art of blacksmithing from his father at an early age and was much in demand in metal working and mechanic work throughout his life. He worked in logging as a millwright for Crofts Lumber Company and then worked heavy equipment. He was a member of the International Association of Operating Engineers. Keith married Clella Jones on August 12, 1941 in Hatch, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the St. George Temple. They had a long and fulfilling life together. She preceded him in death on February 2, 2004. Keith was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings, including Primary Teacher, Name Extraction Program, and in High Priest Group Leaderships. He lived a life of service, always helping someone in some way with a load of wood, auto repairs, and loans of tools. Clella and he demonstrated blacksmithing in many places, including the Folk Life Festival in Southern Utah, and in the park at Capitol Reef. He helped build the DUP Museum and also helped to secure and identify exhibits. He loved the outdoors, camping, fishing in the mountains, and an occasional trip to the desert on cattle drives. He loved his family and animals. He created special loving bonds with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved to visit new places, including Yellowstone, Yosemite and the ocean. He was able to go to Mexico and deep sea fishing in California, and loved exploring places during his winter stays on Arizona, Texas, and California. Keith is survived by children Anna (John) Cram of Fredonia, AZ, Keala (Jerry) Curtis of Fremont, CA, and Don (Dawn) Hepworth of San Antonio, TX; brother Edmund C. Hepworth of Orderville, UT; sisters Cecelia Chamberlain and Eleanor Benson both of Orderville; sister-in-law Norma Jean Hepworth of Glendale, UT; ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Clella and son Keith Lavere Hepworth. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 23, 2005 at 1:00 PM in the Orderville Utah LDS Chapel. Viewings will be held Friday evening from 7:00-8:00 PM (UT Time) at Mosdell Mortuary and Saturday from 11:45-12:45 PM at the Chapel in Orderville. Originally published April 21, 2005 Dorothy LaVern Johansen MIAMI - Dorothy LaVern Johansen, age 74, died April 17, 2005, in Miami, Florida. She was born April 4, 1931, in Salt Lake City, Utah to Herbert George and Laverne Marie Goff Gray. She married Douglas J. Johansen, Sr., in Salt Lake City, Utah on August 23, 1951. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on March 17, 1964. Dorothy lived on the Fairfield Air Force Base in California where her father was stationed. It was while she was there with her family that she met her husband Douglas, who was also stationed there. While her husband was in the military she had the opportunity to live in many parts of the nation and world. Dorothy was very active and loved swimming, gardening, hunting, fishing, and camping. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a great mother, mother-in-law and grandmother, and she loved and was devoted to her family. She was an active member of the LDS Church and held many auxiliary positions. She especially enjoyed serving in the Cub Scouting program, which she did for 13 years. Dorothy and her husband served a mission for the LDS Church in the Canada, Halifax Mission. She is survived by her husband Douglas of St. George, their children: Dennis (Connie) Johansen and Daniel (Janet) Johansen both of St. George, nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and five step-great grandchildren, two brothers and five sisters, nieces, nephews and numerous friends. Preceded in death by her parents, sons: Douglas Jr., and David, granddaughter, Melissa. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 23, 2005, at 10 a.m., at the Sunset LDS 2nd Ward, 82 N. Dixie Dr., St. George, Utah. A visitation will be held Friday, April 22, from 6-8 p.m., at Metcalf Mortuary and Saturday, from 9-9:45 a.m., prior to services at the chapel. Gillespie Neilson, passed away on April 19, 2005. She and her husband Keith Neilson had been long time residents of Parowan, Utah. She was currently a resident of the St. George Care & Rehab Center, and had been since January 2003 after having a stroke. Lois was born to Frank and Blanch Gillespie in Kline, C.O. on August 20th, 1923. Keith and Lois met at a 'Chicken Supper' in New Harmony. They fell madly in love and were married in Pioche, N.V. on July 12, 1940. They were later solemnized in the St. George L.D.S. Temple on June 21, 1957. World War II came soon after and Keith Neilson, now a Marine, shipped out to the South Pacific leaving Lois to care for their two daughters, Lola B. and Starla Rae. After the war, they were able to settle down, concentrate on their family, and had their third daughter Valree. Lois is survived by two of her three daughters: Mrs. George (Starla Rae) Gumbmann, of Goldfield, N.V. and Mrs. Frank (Valree) Fox of Battle Mountain, N.V., and by her two sisters Mrs. Jack (Opal) Levitt and Mrs. Larry (June) Nelson. Also surviving are grandchildren: Ms. Teresa (Teri) Cunningham, Mrs. Mike (T.J.) Beer, Mrs. Charlotte Neilson, Mrs. Paul (Linda) Pretti, Ms. Starla Rae Gumbmann, Mr. Klinton Shawn Gumbmann, and Keith Neilson Fox; and great grandchildren: Kristen and Paul Pretti, and James D. Wolfrey. Funeral services will be held in the Southern Utah Mortuary, in Cedar City on April 23rd, 2005. A viewing will begin at 10:00 a.m. on April 23rd, and will be followed by the funeral at 11:00 a.m. Lois will then be laid to rest in the Cedar City Cemetery, next to her husband Keith and near her oldest daughter Lola. Originally published April 21, 2005 Howard Peterson CEDAR CITY - Howard Peterson,(Sailor Pete) age 89, passed away at his home April 11, 2005. Howard was born on July 12, 1915 to Edgar and Helen Peterson in Malden, Mass. He was a dedicated member of the LDS Church. He was also a member of many civic activities such as the Elks, Masons and the Shriners. Howard was a musician he played the Saxophone and the Piano. He was generous donating to various charities. He loved his family, friends and horses. Howard was a proud member of the U.S. Navy. Surviving family includes his niece Karen (Mike) Kelly of San Diego, CA., a Nephew Bryan (Janet) Peterson of Alpine CA., a Great Nephew Aaron (Kristi) Peterson of San Diego, CA. and a Great Niece Dyanna (Paul) Seals of Michigan. Graveside services will be held Saturday April 23, 2005 at the Enterprise Cemetery at 3:00 p.m. if the weather conditions are not good a memorial service will be held at the Enterprise Ward Chapel. Originally published April 21, 2005 Howard Franklin Wood ADVERTISEMENT CEDAR CITY - Howard Franklin Wood passed away on April 18, 2005 in St. George, Utah. He was born on September 18, 1910 in Cedar City, UT to Franklin Bryner and Sarah Ann Webster. Howard married Orma Shields on November 1, 1934 in the Saint George LDS Temple, Washington County, Utah. Orma preceded him in death on August 3, 1981 in Cedar City. Married Ouida Averett on January 9, 1982 in the Jordan River LDS Temple, Salt Lake County, Utah. Howard was born in Cedar City, UT, where he grew up and attended public school. He served an LDS mission from 1932-1934 in England and Northern Ireland. In 1937, he and Orma moved to Pocatello, ID where he worked at the Bannock Hotel as a clerk. Howard became a machinist at the US Navy Gun Plant in Pocatello in 1941. In 1949 he returned to Cedar City to help his father manage a men's clothing store called Wood's Toggery. The name was later changed to Wood's Store for Men. Howard was very active in Lions Club International and participated in several international conventions. He loved to sing and sang baritone in the noted Cedar City Lions Club Quartet. The group won the Lions International Quartet competition one year and was heard on local station KSUB for 10 years. Howard was very active in the men's singing group, The Master Singers. He sang in many activities, performances and funerals, often with his first wife, Orma. Very active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in quorums, bishoprics and other organizations many times during his life. He was an avid sports fan and loved to golf, playing regularly into his 80s, especially with his sons. He enjoyed attending and supporting his grandchildren's sporting activities. One of the very last things he said was to his grandson Landon, "Play a good game!" Howard is survived by his wife Ouida, 4 sons Orion (Judy) Wood of Newark, CA., Morris (Rocio) Wood of Springfield, VA., George (Beatriz) Wood of San Salvador, El Salvador and Bryan (Jennifer) Wood of Cedar City, UT. Also surviving are 40 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and a brother Paul (Lula) Wood of Cedar City, Utah. He was preceded in death by a sister, Lynn Wood Teel, and a brother, Wayne Wood. Funeral services will be held Saturday April 23, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at the Cedar City Rock Church. Friends may call on Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Southern Utah Mortuary and at 12:30 p.m. at the church prior to services.
