She was born April 12, 1919 in Trenton, Utah, the daughter of Brent Taylor and Laverna Pitcher Allen. She married Ronald Burton on November 17, 1939. They were sealed on February 14, 1981 in the Ogden Temple. He passed away on June 27, 2000. She loved square dancing and ballroom dancing. She enjoyed spending her winters in St. George. Verona is survived by her children; Scott (Alona) South Weber, and Jan Cox (Kenneth), Hurricane, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 29, 2005, at Leavitt's Mortuary, 836 36th Street, Ogden. Send condolences to the family at www.leavittsmortuary.com Originally published April 28, 2005 Jack LeRoy Crosby 1915~2005 Jack LeRoy Crosby, 89, passed away peacefully April 25, 2005, with his caring family by his side. Dad was born in Kanab, Utah, July 29, 1915, to Luella Ford and Jacob Hamblin Crosby. He graduated from Kanab High where his favorite sport was playing on the Kanab High School basketball team. He went to work for the Utah Parks Company. He met and married the love of his life while at Grand Canyon. He then went to work for U.S. Steel Co., Cedar City, being transferred to Provo then to Yerrington, Nev. After retiring from U.S. Steel, they moved to Page, Ariz., where he worked as Manager of D. Stevens Department Store and helped mom with her favorite sport, fishing. (After mom's death, dad went fishing at Strawberry one last time with Kent and Joye. He talked with mom all that day, knowing she was close by and she was helping him do her favorite thing). In 1978, they were able to get back to their hometown, Cedar City, where they were active in many callings with their beloved church, also the Sons and Daughters of Utah Pioneers and the American Legion. They were selected as Grand Marshals of the Pioneer Day Celebration in 1993. Dad was happy making mom happy. His wife, LaRee Wakeling Crosby, preceded him in death December 18, 2000. A great-great grandson, Douglas Jason Judd, also preceded him in death. When mom left dad so alone, he spent the first months in the homes of his daughters, enjoying the love and care of his angels at his side. He then needed safety and security and found that at Legacy House Cottage, South Jordan, where he was dearly loved. Our deepest appreciation goes out to the staff at the Cottage and to the employees of Haven Home Health and Hospice, for the attention, love and care that was shown to dad. He is survived by his children: Laura Lee (Rey) McCombs, St. George, Ut., Joye (Kent) Carlson, West Jordan, Ut., and Jack L.( Jolene) Crosby Jr., Nampa Id., brothers, Sherman F. Crosby, Neil T. (Marie) Crosby, both of Kanab Ut., Kendall (Nell) Crosby, Banning, Ca., many nieces, nephews and friends. Also survived by 15 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren, giving us the joy of four sets of five generations. Twin great-great grand daughters will arrive summer of 2005. Originally published April 28, 2005 Farris Merle Evans CEDAR CITY - Our beloved father, grandfather and husband passed away April 27, 2005 at Kolob Regional Care Center. Born July 13, 1917 in Parowan to Clifford and Ada Evans. He Graduated from Parowan High School and attended BAC (SUU) for one year. Married his sweetheart Dixie Wood in Parowan on April 13, 1940. Their marriage was later sealed for eternity in the St. George Temple on Feb. 17, 1955 they were together for 50 years. He served in the U.S. Army as a Corporal from 1945-1946 and was honorably discharged. After serving he worked at United States Steel for 30 years and retired on Jan. 31, 1976. Together Farris and Dixie had 4 daughters. Joy (Kent) Talbot, Sandra (Barry) Walsh, Sheila (Jerry) Bowler, and Gail Raschke. He was a wonderful grandfather of 15 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren. He was a active member of the LDS church serving on the bishopric and several other callings. Farris married Marge (Bauer) Evans on March 7, 1972 they have been happily married for 13 years. Stepchildren Sandy (Lauren) Condie, Bonnie (Jim) Serrecchid, and Ritchie (JoAnne) Baurer. Surviving siblings Dan Evans, Dee Evans, Hal Evans, and a Sister ValRae Bryant. Preceded in death by his wife Dixie, three brothers and one sister, four grandchildren and one great grandchild. GEORGE - Our loving husband, father, grandpa and friend passed away April 24, 2005, in the Red Cliffs Rehabilitation Center in St. George, Utah. Clayton is survived by his wife, Donna Louise Edwards Farnsworth, his five children, Ronald (Kathleen), Harold (Roma), Julie (Gilbert) McLachlan, Keith (Lee Ann), and Dawnette (Reed) Piggott; his sister, Reah Wilcken of St. George and one brother, Erwin (Genieve) Farnsworth of Kearns. He was the proud grandpa of 21 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren who were the joy of his life. Clayton was born May 14, 1925 in Enterprise, Utah, the son of Bartlett Canfield and Lillie Holt Farnsworth. Clayton grew up in Enterprise where he attended school and graduated in 1943. He was inducted in to the U.S. Army Signal Corp in 1943 and served in the European Theatre of Operations as a Code Breaker and was discharged in 1946. He attended B.Y.U. and received his B.S. and Master Degrees in Education. Clayton was a teacher and educator for 36 years in the schools of Clark and Lincoln Counties Nevada and Washington County, Utah, servicing as Teacher, Principal and Director of several schools in those states. Clayton was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many positions which included: Bishop, Counselor in Stake Presidency, Patriarch, Temple Sealer, Missionary, Teacher and served with his wife as a missionary in the California Anaheim Mission and was awarded the Silver Beaver for his work in the Boy Scouts of America. Clayton loved people and loved to teach. He loved to travel and visit the beauties of this great land. He was a wonderful neighbor and friend and loved his fellow man. He found great enjoyment in fishing, gardening, reading and studying the gospel. Clayton was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Dr. Raymond B. Farnsworth and a sister, LeOra Wadsworth. There will be a viewing Friday, April 29th at the Metcalf Mortuary at 300 West St. George Blvd. from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. A viewing will be Saturday morning from 9:00 until 10:30 a.m. at the Bloomington Stake Center, 100 W. Originally published April 28, 2005 Cecily Belnap Griffith Wallace 1957-2005 Cecily Belnap Griffith Wallace, 48, returned home to her Heavenly Father on April 23, 2005 after a sudden illness. She was born on February 2, 1957 in Salt Lake City, Utah to the Rev. Ronald and Ruth Hansen Belnap. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She is survived by her three children, Brandon, Alicia and Taylor Griffith; her parents; her stepmother, Nancy Belnap; two brothers, Kim (Linda) and Jason (Shamainne); and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at Noon on Friday, April 29, 2005 at Redwood Memorial Mortuary, 6500 South Redwood Road, with a viewing one-hour prior. We all love you, Cecily, and you will be deeply missed. Originally published April 28, 2005 LaVane Matheson Hardy LaVane Matheson Hardy was born of pioneer heritage in Hurricane, Utah, March 20, 1916. She passed away peacefully April 25, 2005. Well-loved by her family, numerous friends and caregivers. LaVane was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Gordon and Gwendolyn Higbee Matheson; sister, Jean Erickson; her infant daughter, Judith Anne Hardy; and her devoted husband, Earl M. Hardy. She is survived by two daughters, Barbara Jane Hardy (John Harker), Anita Kay Hardy and her husband, Gregory Ames Kaslo; grandsons, Daniel Earl Harker (Rebecca Knighton) and Eric James Harker (Amy Allyn); two great-grandchildren, Zachary David Harker and Gwendolyn Sage Harker; sister, Carlene Matheson Laub (Marvin); brother, Donald Gordon Matheson (Donna); and many extended family members remembered. LaVane will be remembered for her love of family, friends, life and nature. A special source of pleasure was her beautiful grandchildren, Daniel and Eric and great-grandchildren, Zachary and Gwendolyn Sage. Many happy times were spent in McCall, Idaho with those she loved. She loved to play the piano, dance, and loved the beauty of the spoken word. Upon being diagnosed with Parkinson's in 1974, LaVane faced her physical challenge with grace, courage and an unexpected good humor. She was a true optimist, and always saw the best in everyone and in life. LaVane said it best, "Everyone has a beautiful face if they have love in their hearts. I don't have rules for anything. You just do the best you can. Everything in life is easier if you help each other through, and give all that is inside you to give." LaVane's loyal caregivers were an inspiration and are held in the highest regard by the family. A gathering for friends and family will be held in LaVane and Earl's home Friday, April 29 from 3:00-6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Parkinson Disease Association, Idaho Chapter, at Saint Alphonsus Hospital in Boise. Lamoreaux, 89, passed away April 23, 2005 at Kolob Regional Care Center in Cedar City, Ut. He was born on December 30, 1915 to Clarence M. and Sarah Elizabeth Jones Lamoreaux in Paragonah, Ut. He later married his sweetheart Jean Perry on Sept. 6, 1942 in Las Vegas, NV and on Dec. 4, 1943 they were solemnized in the St. George Temple. Ralph was preceded in death by his wife Jean Perry, a daughter Peggy Lee Lamoreaux, two brothers Bob and Wayne, two sisters Margaret and Virginia along with his parents. Ralph attended school in Paragonah, Ut. then later graduated from Parowan High School. Ralph served our country in the United States Army during World War II. He enjoyed working with livestock and trips to the mountain. He loved Being with his Grandchildren. He worked his lifetime as a carpenter and a cabinet maker with Perry's Mill and Cabinet Shop in Cedar City. He was a dedicated member of the Iron Rangers Riding Club, and a proud member of the Cedar City BPOE # 1556. Ralph was a faithful member of the LDS Church and served as a High Priest. He is survived by four children Ralph Wayne (Jean) Lamoreaux of Sun Lakes, AZ., Ronald Gene (Robin) Lamoreaux of Hermiston, OR., Dean Perry (Kathy) Lamoreaux of Cedar City, UT., Kim Perry (Rhea) Lamoreaux of Draper, UT., 17 Grandchildren and 14 Great grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters Thelma Jenkins of Paragonah, UT, Colleen Clark of Henderson, NV. and Eloise Morgan of Bloomington, UT. Verna Bowler Verna Leavitt Bowler, age 91, passed away on April 26, 2005 at her home in Logandale, Nevada. She was born the oldest of six children to Thomas Dudley Leavitt Jr. and Rhoda Wittwer on August 7, 1913 in Bunkerville, Nevada. Verna grew up in Bunkerville, she lived in Las Vegas briefly as a child, but most of her schooling was in Mesquite. She met her future husband, Grant playing opposite each other in the high school musical, "In Old Louisiana." Both were talented musicians and shared many moments presenting musical numbers throughout the area in schools and church. Verna attended Dixie College where she graduated in 1932. The next year she taught school in the Moapa Elementary School. A year later, September 1934, she married her one great love, Grant Martin Bowler, of Mesquite. Grant and Verna had six children, Grant Lynn, Katherine, Tresa, Tommy George, Nicklas James, and Lori. After one year of schooling at BYU, Grant was hired as the first principal of the new Logandale Elementary School. From that point on, their lives, would be enmeshed in the cultural and social fabric of Moapa Valley. Verna, while supporting the active life of her husband in school, community and church, was active in church and community activities herself. Verna loved music, and spent time directing children and women's choirs. In 1976, she served with her husband at the St. George Temple President and Matron. It was a calling they would both cherish for their remaining years. Survivors include two sons and three daughters: Lynn (Alene) of Overton; Katherine (Jerry) Hannig of Logandale; Teresa (Raoul) Leavitt of Las Vegas; Nick (Bonnie)Bowler of Logandale; Lori Markosek of Logandale, 22 grandchildren; 44 great grandchildren; one sister, Lola Turek of Las Vegas, NV; and her daughter in law, Beulah Bowler of Las Vegas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Grant, one son, Tom and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be Friday, April 29, 2005 at 1 p.m. at the Logandale 1st Ward Chapel, the Hinckley building. Visitation will be from 11 - 12:45 p.m. prior to services at the chapel. Interment will be in the Logandale Cemetery under the direction of Moapa Valley Mortuary. Originally published April 28, 2005 Joan Christine Vos Joan Christine Vos passed away April 26th 2005 in St. George Utah. She was 73 years old. Joan was born to John and Christine Cameron, on February 17, 1932. She was born in Chicago Illinois where she was raised. She attended Jones Commercial High school graduating in 1949. Following graduation, she pursed a career in Banking. Joan worked for United Savings and Loan for 16 years. She proved herself a valuable employee working up in advancement through the company, ending up being the Branch manager. Joan married Albert Claussen with whom she had one daughter, Lisa Claussen. Albert later passed away. In 1974 she met Richard Vos and they married in 1976. She spent the remainder of her life in St George enjoying traveling with her husband. Joan also loved to read, it was rare to see her without a book. Joan was a member of the L.D.S. Mall Drive Branch of the Pine View Stake. Joan will be missed by all who knew her. Joan is survived by her husband, Richard and her Daughter, Lisa. She is preceded in death by her parents. Services provided by Heideman Mortuary. Originally published April 28, 2005
