He was born on November 26, 1938 in Cleveland, Ohio to James L. Austraw and Jean Roy Austraw. As a young man David lived in Washington D.C., graduating from Wilson H. S. where he was active in student government and choral groups. He was married to Meredith Moore in 1962, was blessed with a daughter, Michelle. They were later divorced. Attending Penn State on an R.O.T.C. scholarship, graduating in 1961, Dave became an ensign in the US Navy, serving throughout the western Pacific, including 2 tours in Viet Nam. He was the Officer-In-Charge of Mobile Inshore Undersea Warfare Surveillance; Unit 13. He went to Viet Nam in 1965 to Danang where he deployed patrol boats. His second tour was to Vung Tau in 1966, where his unit protected ships entering Saigon River. He was discharged from duty after 6 years in 1967 in Long Beach, CA. He tried his hand at being a stockbroker in LA and Denver CO. In 1965 he joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He met Karen McMulln Lane in Long Beach. They were married and sealed in the Los Angeles, CA temple on July 22, 1967 and he became the father to Karen's two small daughters, Maile and Lani. They later were sealed together in the Salt Lake temple in 1968. In 1969 Dave and Karen adopted a baby boy whom they named Rowe. In 1970 they moved to Provo, Utah, where Dave managed a Sandwich Shop. Dave eventually became employed by the Marriott Corp. training in Hotel Management moving his family to Virginia, giving him time to spend with his eldest daughter. During his sojourn in the east he helped provide support to his parents as their health failed. He moved to corporate Employee Relations in 1972, then Personnel Director for Big Boy's restaurants in Ohio. When this was sold he worked for Stouffer's Corp. as Personnel Director for Corp. Feeding Division. Fulfilling his strong sense of duty to country, Commander Austraw continued to serve in the Naval reserve until 1982, then returning to active duty working for Chief of Naval Reserve in New Orleans, transferring to the Pentagon until 1989 when he retired at the rank of Captain. He has recently been serving as serving as Record General for the Naval Order of the United States. Moving to Pensacola in 1989, Dave worked with a friend on government contracts and sold real estate. In 1991 wanting to move back out west, he settled in Las Vegas, where he opened a graphic arts business, worked for Clark County as a Marriage Commissioner. He moved to St.George in 1994 to manage a small mail order food business. With talent and skill, David took on many home improvement projects throughout the years (and homes), imparting this practical knowledge to his children. A "perfectionist", he was hired to paint areas inside the St. George temple! He enjoyed visiting his children and grandchildren and attending the various milestones in their lives. Everyone recalls that he was always available for a good or important talk whether in person or on the phone. He had a reverence for and felt strongly about the gospel of Jesus Christ and always strived to live its principles. Along with his family, it was the most important thing in his life. A dedicated servant of the Lord, he blessed the lives of those who knew him, fulfilling many assignments in The Church, most recently serving as the Director of the Family History in the Ivins Tri-stake family History Center. As an accomplished pianist and singer, he shared his joy of music with his many friends in the Southern Utah Heritage Choir, traveling and performing with them for 9 years. A friend said of his playing, "the music seemed to have a soul all its own." Dave is survived by his wife Karen, 3 daughters, 13 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, Sister Wynn Wats and niece Ashley Edgerton. Preceding him in death was his son, Rowe (February 26, 1997), and both parents. Memorial services will be held Thursday, August 11, 1:00 pm., Ivins Stake Center, Ivins Utah. Originally published August 2, 2005 Floyd Earl Baldwin KAYSVILLE - Floyd Earl Baldwin, 80, passed away July 29, 2005. He fought a courageous battle with lung cancer. His upbeat attitude was a great example to those around him. Born March 18, 1925 to John R. and Helen Harmon Baldwin. He served in World War II in the Navy, Fireman, First Class, South Pacific Theatre, on Peleliu Island. Floyd married Beatrice Foster on October 2, 1975, in Idaho Falls, ID. Solemnized later in the LDS Temple in St. George, UT. They were in the real estate business and enjoyed life together in both work and play. They lived in Idaho Falls, ID, St. George and Kaysville, UT. Survived by his wife of 30 years, Kaysville; children, Julia McGrath, Van Wert, OH; Garry (Sharon) Baldwin, Salt Lake; and Linda (Jim) Pringle, Grand Junction, CO, all from a previous marriage to May Belle Shepherd; step-son Robert E. (Crystal) Foster, Shelley, ID; daughter-in-law Debbie Foster, Hagerman, ID; siblings Louis Purdue, Salt Lake City; Bryon (Arlene) Baldwin, Idaho Falls, ID; and Norma (Glen) Bennette, Bountiful, UT; 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, brother and sister-in-law, Elmer and Mary Baldwin; stepson Walter Wade Foster, and brother-in-law Paul Purdue. He was born August 6, 1948, in St. George, Utah, a son of Amos and Bethel Iverson Beacham. He married Vicki Lynn Troup in 1971, in Port Hueneme, California, and they later divorced. Randy married Linda Ronelle Gordon on April 16, 1978, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Born and raised in St. George, Randy graduated from Dixie High School and attended Dixie Jr. College. A Staff Sargent in the United States Marine Corps, Randy served two tours of duty in Vietnam, during which time he received the Bronze Star for Bravery. After an honorable discharge, he continued his education and enlisted in the National Guard. Randy worked construction until he became employed with the Washington County School District as a custodian. He worked at West Elementary and later Sunset Elementary, where he was affectionately known as Mr. Randy. He genuinely loved all of the children and they loved him. Randy was patriotic, quiet, soft spoken, diligent, and a very hard worker. He was a loving husband, father, and brother. He was a huge NASCAR fan, especially of Rusty Wallace, and Randy followed the circuit. In his spare time, he loved to go arrowhead hunting. Randy is survived by his: wife, Linda, of Ivins; children, Shanna Beacham, Kade Randy (TaLu) Beacham, and Taura Beacham, all of St. George; stepchildren, Sid (Tiffany) Johansen, of Phoenix, AZ, and Corianne (David) Collinsworth, of Tucson, AZ; grandchildren, Jace, McKenna, and Kadynce; brothers, Larry Vance Beacham, of Cedar City, UT, Dennis (Lorrie) Beacham, of Tabiona, UT, and Michael (Velda "Jeannie") Beacham, of St. George; sister, Genevra (Jerry) Farnham; and sister-in-law, Bonnie Beacham, of Cedar City, UT. Originally published August 2, 2005 Howard Stanley Betenson HURRICANE - On July 30, 2005, at his home in Hurricane, Howard Stanley Betenson, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, left his earthly body, and has graduated to a higher school of learning. Howard was born September 15, 1916, in Cedar City, Utah, to Leland Stanley and Annette Webster Betenson. He married Alice Guire in 1950, and they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple in 1958. She preceded him in death. He later married Edna Garrett Sheffield on April 7, 1979. They were sealed in the Ogden Temple in 1984. Raised in Cedar City, Howard attended the local schools, including the BAC, which is now SUU. He joined the National Guard of Utah in 1934. His unit was called into active duty on March 3, 1941. He served his country in the European Theater. He was part of the 3rd Army under General Patton's command during WWII. He served from Utah Beach to Central Europe. Howard received the Bronze Star and recognition for his valor in five different campaigns. He was always a true patriot to his country and proud he had served his country. Howard lived in Bountiful, Utah, after the war, where he became a very active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many ward and stake positions. He served a mission from 1979-81 in North Dakota. He honored his priesthood, loved the Gospel, and had a strong testimony of the truthfulness of the restored Gospel. Later he moved to Hurricane, where he served in the High Priest Group Leadership and was a Family Home Teacher, even though he had lost most of his eyesight. As a young man, Howard dreamed of being able to see the world. He was lucky enough to travel extensively, seeing the Holy Land twice, Greece, and Egypt. He cruised through the Panama Canal, and traveled to Hawaii, Mexico, Canada, and our beautiful United States from sea to shining sea during peace time. During the war, he saw all of Europe and England. Howard is survived by his: loving wife, Edna; children, Jessica (Edward) Gomez, Hal Corey (Daryl) Sheffield, Annette (Steve) Spencer; 6 grandchildren, 6 great-granddaughters; and his brother, Blaine Betenson. He was preceded in death by his son, Howard Stanley Betenson, Jr., parents, brother, Francis, and sister, Florence. Funeral services will be held Wednesday August 3, 2005, at 1:00 p.m. at the Hurricane 13th Ward Chapel, 452 N. 2600 W., with a viewing from 11:30 a.m. to 12:40 p.m., prior to services, at the Chapel. There will be a family prayer at 12:45 p.m. Graveside services will be Saturday, August 6, at 1:00 p.m. at the Salt Lake City Cemetery. Originally published August 2, 2005 Earl Samuel Navarre August 12, 1922 - July 31, 2005 WASHINGTON - Earl Samuel Navarre, known to friends as "Bud" and to family members as "PA", passed away on July 31, 2005 after a long battle with cancer. Bud was a Marine Veteran of WWII, and a life long contractor in custom building. PA loved to tinker in his shop. He always put a special touch in everything he built. He loved the companionship of his cat Cotton, and he loved to make everyone laugh. He always had a great sense of humor. He was a regular at Bishop's coffee shop and could always been found there telling one of his stories to anyone that would listen. Bud will always be remembered for his craftsmanship in all of his remodeling and custom homes. He was a giving person that extended his hand and offered a job to many. PA was always close to his grand kids; Brock, Logan, Shaylee Holyoak and TJ Pardieu. He always had one of them out in the shop building with him, up to the coffee shop, or just hanging around visiting about who won the ball game. He was always supportive of all of his kids, and grand kids. He loved to visit and reminisce the good old days with all of us. He was a great dad and grandpa. PA will be deeply missed and we will cherish the life long memories that he has given us all. He is survived by his wife, Anne Navarre; daughter, Ruth (Kurt) Holyoak; daughter, Twig (Jon) Pardeiu; son, Michael (Chantel) Navarre; sisters, Eileen, Doris and Elenora; 10 grandchildren; and one very special great grandchild, Drake Holyoak. He was born on July 25, 1930 in French Camp, Calif. He is survived by his wife: Arlene Orwin DeWolfe of Cedar City, Utah; his children: Kelly (Tonya) Purdie of Riverton, Utah, Kevin Purdie of West Jordan, Utah, and Kurt Purdie of West Jordan, Utah; 2 granddaughters: Cierra and Mariah Purdie; and one brother: Jess Reavis of Bishop, Calif.
