GEORGE - Thirl Butler was born in Provo, Utah, to Harry and Frances Butler on September 4, 1916. He died Monday, December 5, 2005, at his home in St. George, Utah. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Dorothy Rachel Cole Butler, three children, seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. His brothers, Reid and Oral, and sister, Fola, preceded him in death. Thirl and Dorothy met when they were students at Brigham Young University in Provo. Thirl was active in community theatre and was blessed with a beautiful, trained tenor voice. Thirl, along with his wife, Dorothy, farmed near the Snake River outside of Rupert, Idaho. He was particularly proud of owning two prize Holstein milk cows. They became family pets, fondly named Pearl and Pearl too. After moving to Pocatello, he worked for Mountain Bell Telephone Company, starting as a linesman and retiring as a supervisor. He and Dorothy loved attending college basketball games at Idaho State University, in Pocatello. After moving from Pocatello, Idaho, to Silver Reef, Utah, Thirl became a driving force in the restoration of the Silver Reef Wells Fargo Building. He and Dorothy worked tirelessly with other community members to bring the project to completion. Thirl was a very accepting, highly principled man, who left this world a better place because of his life. He loved his family, laughter, and listening to and performing music. To his grandchildren and great-grandchildren he was known as the singing grandpa. He greatly appreciated fine art and antiques. Private family services will be held, and he will be laid to rest in Leeds, Utah. Donations may be made in Thirl's memory to a charity of your choice.
