GEORGE - Carl Glen Agren, 93, passed away December 13, 2005, as the result of a pedestrian-car accident. Carl was born March 29, 1912, in Lewisville, Idaho, to Pehr Alfred and Zina Elnora Hammond Agren. He grew up on a farm in Lewisville, and upon the death of his father, when he was sixteen, he ran the farm. He graduated from high school and then served an LDS mission to the British Isles. He married Ila Hayes in the Logan, Temple, September 12, 1935. They lived most of their married life in Idaho: 1935-1955 in Lewisville; 1955-1965 in Burton; 1965-1976 in Rexburg; and 1976-1990 in Idaho Falls. Their final move was to St. George, Utah. In both Idaho Falls and St. George, Carl attended the temple for two sessions every day it was open, unless he was ill. In 1955, Carl traded a well-developed 60-acre farm in Lewisville for a 400-acre undeveloped farm in Burton. He bought a scraper so he could clear and level the farm himself. As time went on, he was able to make more money on the scraper than by farming. He spent the next twenty plus years on his big equipment which he learned to maintain and repair by himself. His integrity and hard work made him popular and he made a good living. Carl bought a 16-foot aluminum outboard motorboat and enjoyed boating and fishing on the Snake River and Yellowstone Lake. He loved using his ingenuity to devise new and creative inventions. He had several patented devices. At various times, he sold and repaired TVs, made and sold woodburning stoves, invented and sold grain elevators, and had a grain and feed business. His great love was his family. He enjoyed camping and taking trips with them. He had a lot of self discipline and never raised his voice to his children. A swear word never crossed his lips, even though farming could often be frustrating. He tenderly cared for Ila when she was very ill near the end of her life. Carl's next great love was the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In addition to his mission as a young man, he served a three-year stake mission. He and Ila served two 18-month missions together. He was a bishop's counselor, bishop, and served on the High Council in two different stakes. He loved going to the temple and was going to the temple on the morning that he was killed. Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Ila; two sons, Brian Carl and Phillip Neal; and a grandson, Brent Porter. He is survived by daughters Rochelle Whitney, St. George; Elaine (Arthur) Porter, Cedar City; and Sallie (Mark) Shelton, Riverton; son, Stuart Hays (Pam) Agren, Mesa, AZ. Carl also leaves 18 grandchildren, and 38 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be Saturday, December 17, 2005, at 11:30 a.m. at the Spilsbury Mortuary Chapel, 110 S. She attended East High School and the University of Utah, graduating with honors in Education and Home Economics. She was involved in numerous campus activities and organizations. She remained active in AAUW throughout much of her life. Barbara met the love her life, Gail J. Gill, at the age of 6 in Sunday school; it took them another 13 years to actually begin dating and they were married on Christmas Day in 1942 while Gail was in the army. Barbara used her education in the process of raising her two children, Trisha and Gregory. She made homemaking her career while Gail was traveling with work. She became a master seamstress, creating anything from fashion clothing to draperies and upholstery. She remained passionate in her sewing until illness intervened. She also embraced all things beautiful, from graphic arts to nature. Her love of beauty found its ultimate expression in photography. She had an uncanny eye for composition, and her ability to focus on the fascinating in the commonplace resulted in numerous awards for her photographic prints. She and Gail travel extensively in pursuit of photo opportunities, from Europe to Africa, as well as traversing most of the United States. After overcoming cancer in 1986, she and Gail moved to St. George, finding an endless realm for photography. Together they explored much of Southern Utah, while cultivating new friends and interests. Both were active in the Institute for Continuing Learning at Dixie State College and participated in various community activities.
