GEORGE - Shirley Bentley Hail died December 23, 2005 at The Meadows Assisted Living Center in St. George. She was born June 30, 1915 in St. George. In May of 1938 Shirley married Brown Hail. She was the oldest of three girls. Shirley was above all else happy. She loved to joke around and not take life too seriously. She often spoke fondly of her teenage years spent in Bremerton, Washington, where the air was so clean and fresh. It was one of the favorite times of her life. For many years her favorite hobby was playing Bridge. She would also often mention how much she enjoyed taking ballet classes in her younger years at Dixie College. The Meadows Assisted Living Center staff deserves special thanks for making the final part of Shirley's life so pleasant and happy. I will always be grateful to Terrill Clove and Ada White and the rest of the staff for the personal friendly care my mother received. Also I am grateful to the Staff of Odyssey Health Care for their wonderful Hospice care. Shirley is survived by her son John Hail, sister Phyllis Bentley LeBaron, nieces Sharlene Pickett and Carolyn Ann Stone Collins, and nephew Doug Hannig. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Brown Hail, her sister Carolyn Bentley Hannig, her father John Bentley and mother Anna Sturznegger Bentley. Originally published December 28, 2005 Daniel Levi Larkin CEDAR CITY - Daniel Levi Larkin, 31, our beloved husband, father and friend was called home Friday, December 23, 2005 in his home in Cedar City of unknown causes. Danny was born July 11, 1974 in St. George, Utah to LeAnne and Roger Larkin. His parents later divorced. He has three brothers and one sister, Jeff Larkin, Dallon (D.J.) Larkin, Nate (Carrie) Larkin and Monica Heitt. His youngest brother Jason preceded him in death. April 1, 2005 Danny married his sweetheart Jessica Lyn Anderson. He has two sons, Donavan Kasey Larkin (12) Cedar City and Nickolus Shawn Larkin (10) of Salt Lake City. Dan loved to hike, camp, and rock climb with his family. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and had a great reverence and respect for the outdoors. He was an accomplished chef along with an accredited musician and song writer. He loved life and was always seen with a sincere smile or laughter in his voice. He was always available to assist others when they called at the spur of the moment. He could be found helping out with mechanical problems or tending the yard or garden. He loved and worked with horses and cattle and ranching. He was a loving and excellent, patient husband and father. His greatest joy was sharing time with his wife, sons, family and friends. Of all of Gods children Danny had the purest and most kind heart. His actions of compassion were given without seeking acknowledgement for himself. He always made time for others and his life reflected his great love and appreciation for our Lord Jesus Christ. Friends and associates sought his counsel, because he always listened and counseled with compassion, Love and wisdom. Despite his young years Danny had the wisdom and knowledge of the ancient ones. He sincerely desired to serve any and all that came to him with troubled hearts. Despite his own physical pain from injury, he never complained and was a constant example of peace to those that suffered. The love he and his beautiful bride Jessica shared was the rare love we all hope for, but few experience. They were inseparable. He was always the gentleman, opening her door, holding her hand or walking side by side, as they had planned to walk throughout the remainder of their lives together as a family. We do not know or understand why God has called our beautiful brother home so early, but we are assured Danny is busy preparing a spectacular mansion for his family, as he continues to watch over all of us left behind. He is greatly missed and loved forever. He is survived by his wife Jessica Lyn Anderson Larkin. Originally published December 28, 2005 Goldie Thomas Schreier Retired Montana bookstore owner Goldie Schreier died Tuesday, December 20th, in an assisted living facility in St. George Utah. She was 87. Goldie was born Goldie Thomas in 1918 on her family ranch at Mecaha, in central Montana. She is the daughter of William K. and Evelena (Smith) Thomas. She began her education in a one room log school, but attended boarding school to graduate from Winnett High School in 1936. During the lean Depression years and prior to World War II she joined her family in Saginaw, Michigan, while her father worked for the WPA as a stone sculptor and carpenter. During the war she attended night classes, worked as a typist for the president of Chrysler Corporation and then at a pharmacy of St. Mary's Hospital, where she was under the tutelage of Sister Margaret Mary. Sister Margaret Mary was highly influential in Goldie's life and encouraged her studies in literature and journalism. As a result she began her journalism studies at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, in 1945. That year Goldie married John Ambrose Schreier. It was on a train trip to San Francisco in 1943 that she met John Schreier who was stationed at Vallejo, California, in the U.S. Army's barrage balloon coastal defense division. They corresponded during the war while John fought in the South Pacific until his release shortly after the surrender of Japan. The couple moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where they lived with his parents until their first son, William J. Schreier, was born in 1947. Goldie longed for her Western heritage and returned to Montana where she remained until retirement to St. George, Utah in 1989. During those years with her husband she raised a family with the birth of their second son, Carl A. Schreier in 1952, until the death of her husband in 1964. Independently she raised her two sons and opened a bookstore in Lewistown, Montana, in the 1970s. It was a pioneer bookstore for the state and the origins of Homestead Publishing. Goldie's love of Western history and literature was fostered as a girl with her homestead parents that continued through her life. Her two brothers passed away before her. Otis Thomas in 1976 and Preston Thomas in 1983. She is survived by her sons: William and his wife Cheryl, who work for the National Park Service and reside in Hazen, North Dakota, and; Carl, an author and publisher, and his partner Dr. Joe Troncoso of San Francisco and Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
