Betty was born May 15, 1924 to Ambrose Kiernan and Bernice Schurman, in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Daughter of a police captain, Betty and her three sisters grew up in Sheboygan. After graduating from the Sheboygan County Normal School, Betty taught elementary school in rural Sheboygan County, "schoolmarm" to 12 students in eight grades, all in a one-room schoolhouse. In 1946, Betty married Donald Gabler. With three children, and a fourth on the way, Betty and Don moved to Los Angeles, California in 1952. In addition to being a terrific mom to six children, Betty was an accomplished seamstress. When her children were young she made most of their clothes and over the years she developed her talent into designing and sewing custom clothing for friends and acquaintances. She was a fine baker as well, and a passionate golfer. As her children grew up, Betty returned to teaching, spending 15 years teaching 6th grade at St. Martin-In-the-Fields Day School in suburban Los Angeles. Drawn by the beautiful country, clean air, uncrowded living, and great golf, Betty and Don moved to St. George in 1989. They were members of the Bloomington Country Club, where Betty and her circle of friends enjoyed golfing together. Betty continued to create custom clothing for her friends, and was a tireless volunteer worker at the St. George Thrift Shop. Devout Catholics, Betty and Don were long-time members of St. George Catholic Church. After Don's death in 2004, Betty's uncertain health led her children to ask her to return to the Los Angeles area. Betty is survived by her three sisters, Mary Ann Gebler, of Sheboygan, Wisconsin; Kathyleen St. Louis, of Tucson, Arizona; and Pat Majerus, of Cedar Falls, Iowa; as well as by her six children, Rob, of Louisville, Kentucky; Mark (Pat), of Placentia, California; Penny (Craig) Kellogg, of Reno, NV; Katy (Dan) Funicello, of North Hills, California; Don (Erin), of Valencia, California, and Liz (Ron) Howard, of Simi Valley, California; eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at St John Eudes Catholic Church in Chatsworth, California on Monday, December 12 at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Betty's name to Providence Holy Cross Foundation, 15031 Rinaldi Street, P.O. Box 9600, Mission Hills, CA 91346.
