GEORGE - Patricia Harrington Borbely, age 72, loving wife, mother and grandmother, died on February 13, 2005 in St. George. She was born October 31, 1932 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. She was a resident of Southern California for over 60 years before she and her husband retired to St. George in 2001. She is survived by her husband William Borbely; daughters, Theresa Logan, Sheila Munoz-Flores, Michele Garrigues, and her grandchildren, Michael, Megan, Jonathan, Kyle, Gage and great granddaughter, Jade. Originally published February 23, 2005 Fern McArthur Hafen IVINS - Separated by death for 17-1/2 years, Weston Hafen took his eternal companion by the hand and led Fern McArthur Hafen into eternity at 7:43 p.m. on Sunday, 20 February 2005. The day after their wedding on 25 April 1934, they moved to Ivins, Utah, 12 years after the first settlers. She loved to tell stories about the early days in Ivins. With the birth of each of their 11 children Joanne (Leon) Mercier, Ada Marie (Wayne) Cannon, Donald Weston (Joan), Emma (Bill) Fife, Charles Moroni *deceased*, Wilford Leon (Joanne), McArthur (Sharman), David (Jalinda), a stillborn baby boy, Rebecca (Lawrence) Burton, and Debbie they taught by their example the Golden Rule. Fern's posterity also includes 44 grandchildren, 124 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren. A love for God and a love for others was extended to EVERYONE by putting their needs secondary to the needs of others. Her life was dedicated to: love of family, temple, service, and quilting. She was Postmaster of Ivins for almost 44 years. Fern loved all relatives and friends, especially little children. Descended from the "Mormon" Pioneers who entered the St. George Valley in December 1861, she was proud of her heritage and loved to tell stories about her ancestors. Her grandparents were Thomas Punter and Emmaline Jarvis Cottam and Daniel Duncan and Elizabeth Bullock McArthur. Fern entered the family of Moroni and Emma Jarvis Cottam McArthur on 7 October 1912 in her Grandma Cottam's home. From the arrival of each child, Willard (died as an infant), Nellie Gubler, Florence Leavitt (deceased), Fern Hafen (deceased), Rex Cottam (deceased), Annie Jennings, Irvin (deceased), Eldon, Ross J, and Thomas P, there was never a dull moment in the McArthur family. Fern said, "I was born of goodly parents." Their lives were dedicated to teaching their children values and knowing right from wrong. They taught their children to be proud to be an American and to give service to family, community, church, and nation. Funeral services will be held Saturday, 26 February 2005, at 2:00 p.m at Ivins Heritage Chapel, 240 East 1060 South, Ivins, Utah. Viewings will be held Friday, 25 Feb 2005, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Spilsbury Mortuary and Saturday, 26 Feb 2005 from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m., prior to the services, at the Chapel. Originally published February 23, 2005 Jane Allie Sylvester Munford CEDAR CITY - Jane Allie Sylvester Munford passed away at her home in Cedar City, February 21, 2005, just prior to her 95th birthday. Jane was born in Toquerville, UT March 5, 1910 to Joseph Sylvester and Emeline Stewart Chidester. She grew up in Toquerville and Pintura. Jane completed high school in Hurricane in 1930 and received a writing scholarship to attend BAC. While at BAC, she met and married her sweetheart, Robert Cox Munford on May 21, 1932 in St. George, UT. The marriage was later solemnized in the St. George Temple. Jane was a versatile person with talents in art, music, gardening and especially poetry. She has shared her talent freely for the benefit of her church, community and family . She has been a friend to many a person who truly cared about others. Jane was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Some of her fondest memories were related to her service in the Cedar Stake Primary Board, and callings working with the Indian Branch. She was one of the first Cub Scout Den Mothers in Cedar City and instilled her love of scouting and the outdoors in her sons and family. Her wisdom has been a blessing to her family and she has served an exemplary matriarch for her large posterity. She was blessed to have had seven children, 25 grandchildren, 62 great grandchildren and thirty great-great grandchildren at the time of her passing. Her parents, all of her brothers and sisters, her husband and four of her children: Merlin, Merrill, Ted Eugene and Zelma, preceded her in death. She is survived by her children Flora Christensen Workman of Hurricane, Emeline Adams of Cedar City, Kenneth Sylvester (Janice) Munford of Cedar City, and daughter-in-law Carolene Nichols Munford of Vernal. Jane has had a wonderful life which has spanned from pioneer to modern. The family says. "Good for you Grandma, we love you." Our family owes our special appreciation to the Iron County Home Health personnel, who have truly blessed our family with the selfless loving care they have extended to our special family treasure, Grandma Munford. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 26, 2005 at 11:00 am at the Cedar 4th Ward Chapel (400 N 500 W). Friends and family may visit Friday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at Southern Utah Mortuary and Saturday morning one hour prior to services at the church. Originally published February 23, 2005 Virginia Weeks Virginia Stewart Hair Weeks, born on Dec 2, 1921 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Mary Jane Stewart and Thomas C. Hair. Died February 21, 2005 in St. George Utah. Graduated East High, B.A. from the University of Utah and the McCune School of Music and Art in Education, Music, and Speech. Original member of the Desert Theatre. Copy editor at the Chronicle; active in Beta Delta Mu (music), Theta Alpha Phi (Drama), Cwean and Apmin (Fine Arts), Speech Society and Lambda Delta Sigma. She taught private piano and organ lessons for over fifty years. Her music teachers included John Longhurst, Richard P. Condie, and Hugh W. Dougall, author of "Jesus of Nazareth." She was a member of the American Guild of Organists, American Theatre Organ Society, Salt Lake City Ladies' Literary Club, MacDowell Club, Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, and the American Association of University Women. She married Joseph Keith Weeks June 15, 1949; solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on their fifth wedding anniversary. Active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; served in every musical job, drama director, dance instructor, teacher in Gospel Doctrine, Relief Society and a Visiting Teacher. Resident of Salt Lake until moving to St. George in 1985. She performed many organ programs in the St. George Tabernacle as well as taught organ. She was proud of her pioneer ancestry; all eight of her great grandparents, a great, great grandmother, her paternal grandfather came to Salt Lake as pioneers before the railroad. Great Grandfather, Daniel Spencer brought the first company of pioneers to come into the Salt Lake Valley on September 23, 1847 after Brigham Young. She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Jane Hair, and a daughter Katherine Virginia. She is survived by her husband J. Keith Weeks, son Joseph K (Kathryn) Weeks Jr., daughters Pamela Clark and Rebecca Fuller, brother Thomas Bruce Hair (Jackie) Perth, Australia, as well as 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandsons.
