He was 92 years old. His passing was peaceful; he was surrounded by family, and he died five years to the day that his dear wife, Evelyn died. Shelby Oliver was born August 11, 1912 at the family homestead in Eaton, Colorado. He graduated from Oberlin College in 1935, where he met and later married Evelyn Lucetta Gordinier. He received his doctorate from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Oliver's surgical residency was interrupted by World War II, when he served from1942-1945 in Burma and China. He administered to soldiers on the front lines of battle, pioneering a mobile surgical model now known as the MASH unit. Dr. Oliver moved to Alameda, California in 1947 to practice medicine with Dr. Jack Cheadle. The two physicians worked together for 25 years until Dr. Cheadle's death. Shelby then continued his surgical practice with his son, Dr. David Oliver, until 1977. He retired to Borrego Springs, California. Shelby and Evelyn enjoyed their family of eight children, 15 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. They were married in 1936, and Shelby mourned deeply her passing in 2000. He created the Evelyn "Puddy" Oliver Scholarship Fund at their beloved Oberlin College, which endows 32 students each year with full funding for college education. Family and friends of William Shelby Oliver observed a graveside service in Eaton, Colorado at the family burial plot on June 11, 2005.
