He was born in Nephi, Utah, on April 10, 1953. He attended South Elementary, Cedar High School, Southern Utah State College and received his Juris Doctorate from the Old College School of Law, Reno, Nevada, in 1985. Jim was happiest when he was palling around with his children while offering praise and wisdom. He enjoyed a hot cup of coffee on a cold mountain morning and riding the trails and ridges of Cottonwood on a sure-footed horse. Jim was a cowboy, an athlete, a hardrock miner, a city manager, a horse trainer and a fighter (in and out of the ring); he was a scholar, a political junkie, and always a champion of the underdog. Jim Burns was many things, but most of all he was a loving and proud father to his Jack, Jill and Beth. He is survived by his son Jack and daughters Jillian Burns Hymas and Bethany Burns. He is also survived by two beautiful grandchildren, Carmen Burns and Hayden Hymas, his mother Connie Burns, his brothers Joe and Scott Burns, his niece Carly Burns and nephews Joe and Nicholas Burns. He also leaves behind his trusted dog Henry. Jim was preceded in death by his brother Zachary and his father, the Honorable J. Harlan Burns. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 8, 2005, at 12:00 noon at the Cedar Southern Utah Mortuary. Friends and family may call or visit on Friday, July 8, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. at the Cedar Southern Utah Mortuary. A private, family graveside service will follow at the Cedar City Cemetery. Originally published July 7, 2005 Douglas Lynn Davis ST. GEORGE - Douglas Lynn Davis, age 70, passed away Monday, July 4, 2005, at Dixie Regional Memorial Hospital in St. George. He was the first child born to Lynn and Gwen Cooper Davis on May 27, 1935, in Panguitch, Utah. Doug served in the U.S. Army. He attended the University of Utah and Barber College. Doug lived in the warmer climate of California for most of his life, but for the past 30 years he has resided in St. George. He was an avid golfer and was an active member of the Al-Anon Chapter in St. George. He is survived by his: brother, Grant, of Washington, UT; sisters, Barbara, of Las Vegas, NV, and Betty, of Salt Lake City, UT; and many extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Kenneth, and grandparents. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 7, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. at the Spilsbury Mortuary Chapel, 110 S. Bluff St., with a visitation from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., prior to services, at the Mortuary. Interment will be at the Panguitch City Cemetery. Originally published July 7, 2005 Robert Daniel Kersh, Jr. ANDERSON JUNCTION - Robert Daniel Kersh, Jr., age 39, passed away Sunday, July 3, 2005, of natural causes at his home in Anderson Junction, Utah. He was born on October 2, 1965, in Salt Lake City, Utah, a son of Robert Daniel and Lucille Balich Kersh, Sr. Bobby was raised in Salt Lake City and Anderson Junction. He graduated from Taylorsville High School. He was a commercial construction specialist and an avid fisherman, hunter, and sportsman. He was a Trustee for the Eagles Club. Bobby was well known, respected, and loved by all. He had a heart of gold, and he will be dearly missed. He is survived by his: parents, Robert and Lucille, of Anderson Junction, UT; children, Candace, Lindsey, and Madison Rose; sister, Lori (Mike Fitzgerald) Kersh; nephews, Xander, Kirkland, Micheal Paul; aunts and uncles, Jan Balich, George Balich, Shirley and Bruce Tofft, Carolyn and Jim Fullmer; special fiance, Barbara Hart, and her children, Jonah and Mattie; and two special friends, Howard Bagnell and Billy Smith. Originally published July 7, 2005 Robert Thelmer Stratton CEDAR CITY - Robert Thelmer Stratton, age 100, passed away on July 4, 2005 at his home in Cedar City, Utah. He was the eldest son of Robert Bird Stratton and Rosalie Cornelius Stratton. He married Leona Morrill and was later divorced. Then, he married Thelma Lucile Mitchell on August 25, 1933. Thelmer was born in Virgin, Utah on October 28, 1904. He moved to Hurricane in 1911 and went to school through the 10th grade. He then went to school in St. George where he was known for his fine voice and humor. He sang in the Opera "Ermany." He moved to Cedar City in 1933 and operated a radiator and battery shop for 10 years. Thelmer sold the first canned natural gas for heating. He was a rancher and farmer most of his life and managed the irrigation water in Cedar for 46 years. He was also the secretary of the Old Fort and Old Field for 21 years. Thelmer was a good leader, father and grandfather. He always helped people, and his family and friends will greatly miss him. He has posterity of 9 children, 37 grandchildren, 61 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. Surviving family include his children Thel Stratton of Salt Lake City, UT, Robert LaVon Stratton of Cedar City, UT, Alvin Stratton of American Falls, ID, Laura Friel of Ivins, UT, Ella Maag of Hurricane, UT, Bert Stratton of Cedar City, UT, Evelyn Stratton (deceased), Norma Thompson of Clinton, UT, and Ed Stratton of Cedar City, UT. His brothers and sisters; Vernal Stratton of Cedar City, UT, Elton Stratton of Cedar City, UT, Norene Payne of Provo, UT, and Arwin Stratton of Hurricane, UT. Thelmer was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Evelyn Stratton, brother Aril Stratton, sisters Elena Perry and Ethel Thompson, grandchildren Sheri Shratton, and great-grandchildren Brandon Higbee and Jodi Christine Stout. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 9, 2005 at 3:00 p.m. at the Southern Utah Mortuary in Cedar City.
