Originally published July 21, 2005 Cummings Gates ST. GEORGE - Our loving husband, father, grandfather & friend, Cummings Gates, passed away quietly on Monday, July 18, 2005 at the age of 92. Cummings was born to Hyrum & Emma Gates on June 27, 1913 in Escalante, Utah. Dad grew up in Escalante where he was known as Lottie. He spent many years sheepherding in and exploring around the Henry & Boulder Mountains. Dad couldn't believe that they wouldn't have consulted him when they created the Escalante Staircase National Monument because "I know more about that area than anybody else still alive!" (And he probably did!) Our family cherishes our vacations with Dad in Escalante as he took his children & grandchildren hunting, fishing & sight seeing, showing us old campsites and telling wonderful stories of his adventures there. In 1939, Dad & a couple of friends ventured to San Francisco to catch the World's Fair. Their journey then took them to Idaho where they stopped to earn some money picking peas for the return trip home. There he met the love of his life, Golda Jeneal Davenport and married her 9 days later on August 19, 1939. They stuck out their thumbs and headed back to Escalante where they lived with Dad's parents for a couple of years. Mom & Dad eventually moved to Salt Lake City where they raised five children. Dad worked as an engineer for the Rio Grande & Western Railroad and spent his spare time working in the construction field. Dad was a true craftsman and used his talents to construct beautiful homes to Mom's specifications. He retired from the railroad after 37 years of service and continued to build, creating windmills, roadrunners & Christmas decorations for his family & friends. Dad was a master gardener, planting a half-acre of garden every year which we all were fortunate to reap from. He also loved horses and after retiring to South Jordan, Utah he raised Thoroughbreds that he raced at local tracks throughout Utah, Wyoming & Arizona. After "wintering" for many years in St. George, Utah, Mom & Dad finally sold their home and headed south to live full-time in sunny St. George. Cummings leaves behind his devoted wife of 66 years, his children Don (Merlene) Gates, Sherilyn (Phil) Gallo, Ken (Judy) Gates, Roxanne (Will) Leonard, Bruce (Debbie) Gates, and many cherished grandchildren & great grandchildren. We love you Dad. A visitation will be held Saturday, July 23, 2005, from 9:30-10:30, at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 W. St. George Blvd., prior to graveside services at 11 a.m, at the Tonaquint Cemetery. GEORGE - Marilyn Jean Young, age 71, passed away on Wednesday, July 20, 2005, at her home in St. George, after a two month battle with brain cancer. Marilyn was born in Flushing, Long Island, New York, on Halloween day, October 31,1933, to Frank Squire and Velma Mae Smith West. As a young child, she moved with her parents to East Chester, a tiny town outside New York City, where she attended grade school and high school. It was there that she gained a great love of her country and realized the joy of group participation. She learned firsthand, that the whole is as big as the contribution you make, and until her death she continued to communicate with that group of childhood friends. When Marilyn was a junior in high school, her family moved to Glendora, California. She graduated from Citrus Union High School and attended BYU where she met Arlo D. Young. They were married on February 29, 1952. Marilyn was an active and faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, her entire life and served in many leadership and teaching positions up until the time of her illness. She was an example to all she served and worked with. Decorative painting was her passion for years. In 1962, one of her daughters gave her a set of brushes and primary color paints as a gift. She never laid them down. Her love of tole painting kindled friendships, too many to mention, and allowed her travel to many states. It was a highlight in her life and, along with her love of the gospel, family and friends, brought her many years of joy and happiness. She is survived by her: husband, Arlo; four children, Cynthia (Keith) Dance, Seattle, WA, Victoria Wilson, Austin, TX, Michelle (Bradley) Yergersen, Salt Lake City, UT, and Jeffery (Erin) Young, Salt Lake City, UT; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and her brother Michael (Carla) West, St. George, UT.
