GEORGE, UT - Maiben Bennett Ashby, 92, passed away in St. George, Utah on July 21, 2005. He was born June 16, 1913 in Leamington, Utah to Jane Marinda Stephenson and Rodney Badger Ashby. He married Elsa Clara Wohlgemuth on August 24, 1936 in the LDS Manti Temple. Maiben lived in Leamington, Utah until he served a LDS Mission in Minnesota and North Dakota. After his mission he attended and graduated from Branch Agricultural Junior College in Cedar City, Utah. He moved to St. George, Utah in 1937 and operated a service station for six years, then worked in the Bank of St. George for another six years. In 1948 he became a newspaper distributor and was responsible for newspapers from Salt Lake City, Utah to Las Vegas, Nevada and Los Angeles, California. He supervised carriers in all of Washington County and parts of Southern Nevada. Maiben served as Scoutmaster, Explorer Advisor, Sunday School Teacher, Deacon's Advisor, Bishop's Counselor, Bishop, Stake High Counselor, and was awarded the Boy Scouts of America Silver Beaver Award. He also served as District Commissioner of Scouting, Justice of the Peace St. George Precinct for 16 years, St. George City Justice for six years and was a member of the St. George Chamber of Commerce. Maiben inherited his green thumb from his mother. He raised an enormous garden for over 70 years and was still working in his garden three weeks ago. He tried different and even exotic varieties of fruits and vegetables along with the usual corn, tomatoes, grapes and pecans. He is survived by one son, Arnold Carl Ashby of West Valley City, Utah; four daughters, Viola Rae Rosengreen of Renton, Washington, Selma Ann Johnson Brown of El Dorado Hills, California, Karen Lillian Ginocchio of St. George, Utah and Elsa Jane Picklesimer of St. George, Utah; 38 grandchildren; 74 great grandchildren; and a sister, Nina Rasmussen. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Elsa. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 29, 2005, 11 a.m., Bloomington Hills LDS Ft. Pierce Chapel, 750 E. Ft. Pierce Dr., St. George, Utah. Visitations will be held Thursday, 6-8 p.m., Metcalf Mortuary, 288 W. St. George Blvd. and Friday, 9:30-10:30 a.m., prior to services at the Ft. Pierce Chapel. Originally published July 24, 2005 Joseph Kay Sandberg Joseph Kay Sandberg, 61, passed away on July 21, 2005 in Millford, Utah. He was born June 30, 1944 in Salt Lake City to Joseph Clarence Sandberg and Anna Marie Hermansen. He married Dianne Rogerson on Sept 4, 1964 in Parowan, Utah. They had two children, JoAnne and Jodi Kaye. He later married Carol Ann Martin Smith on February 7, 1972. They had a son, Joe Karl Sandberg. Joseph Kay Sandberg spent his early life on the Sandberg Ranch in John's Valley. He loved fishing, hunting, and taking care of animals. He worked as a surveyor for Sandberg Engineers, on construction of Cedar High School, and 18 plus years for the Union Pacific Railroad. He attended Cedar High School where he played the trumpet in the band. After graduating from high school he attended the University of Utah. He is survived by his children JoAnne (Bryan) Symonette of Salt Lake City, Jodi Kaye (Justin) Starr,Joe Karl Sandberg and 6 grandchildren. Sisters,Marie S. Memmott, Ruth S. Webb and brothers James C. Sandberg (Marba) and Rex D. Sandberg (Grace). He is preceded in death by his parents, Avon S. Parry Kelley (sister), Merrill G. Memmott (brother in law), and Ralph Webb (brother in law). Originally published July 24, 2005 SFC Ronald Tanner Wood Sergeant First Class Ronald Tanner Wood of the Utah Army National Guard was born in Provo, Utah on February 17, 1977. A member of the Bravo Battery 1st Battalion 148th Field Artillery in Brigham City, he was serving his country in Operation Iraqi Freedom. SFC Wood was riding in an armored vehicle that was hit by a roadside explosive device on July 16 in Kirkuk, Iraq, and SFC Wood was killed. In November, 1994, during his senior year at Cedar High School, SFC Ron Wood became a member of the Headquarters Battery 2nd Battalion 222nd Field Artillery in Cedar City. He was a member of the 222nd when they were activated near the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and shortly after his return from that activation he became a member of the l48th Field Artillery in Brigham City. The son of Ron and Jody Wood, former Cedar City residents, Ron is the oldest of five children. His younger siblings are: SPC Nathan Wood of the Utah Army National Guard, Lehi, Utah; Julie (Aaron) Langreder, Canon City, Colorado; Cody Wood, Canon City, Colorado; Johnny Wood, Canon City, Colorado. Ron is the uncle of Brody, Alandra, and Wayne Langreder, and the grandson of Ann Like and the deceased Jim Like, all of Canon City, Colorado. He is also the grandson of the deceased Dwane and Luise Wood of Las Vegas, Nevada. Ron Wood also has uncles, aunts, and cousins in Utah, Colorado, and Nevada. Ron liked to laugh and enjoy life. He enjoyed reading books, listening to music, bodybuilding, weight lifting, and running. Ron was always concerned about everyone else's needs, and wanted to make sure that his family was happy. He was proud to be a U. S. Army soldier, and he was dedicated and loyal to his fellow soldiers until the end of his life. SFC Ronald Tanner Wood was a true blue national hero, and he will be sorely missed by his family, friends, and fellow soldiers. Funeral Services will be held at the Cedar High School Auditorium, Tuesday, July 26, 2005 at 12:00 noon. Family and friends may come to visit Sunday from 10:00a.m.- 5:00p.m and Monday 10:00a.m.-5:00p.m. Family will be present Monday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. All viewings will be located at the Southern Utah Mortuary at 190 N. 300 W.
