GEORGE - Kacy Scott Abbott, 22, of St. George, Utah, passed away July 24, 2005, in St. George. He was born December 16, 1982, in St. George, Utah, to Karen Cowley and Scott Abbott. He was born June 16, 1913 in Leamington, Utah to Jane Marinda Stephenson and Rodney Badger Ashby. He married Elsa Clara Wohlgemuth on August 24, 1936 in the LDS Manti Temple. Maiben lived in Leamington, Utah until he served a LDS Mission in Minnesota and North Dakota. After his mission he attended and graduated from Branch Agricultural Junior College in Cedar City, Utah. He moved to St. George, Utah in 1937 and operated a service station for six years, then worked in the Bank of St. George for another six years. In 1948 he became a newspaper distributor and was responsible for newspapers from Salt Lake City, Utah to Las Vegas, Nevada and Los Angeles, California. He supervised carriers in all of Washington County and parts of Southern Nevada. Maiben served as Scoutmaster, Explorer Advisor, Sunday School Teacher, Deacon's Advisor, Bishop's Counselor, Bishop, Stake High Counselor, and was awarded the Boy Scouts of America Silver Beaver Award. He also served as District Commissioner of Scouting, Justice of the Peace St. George Precinct for 16 years, St. George City Justice for six years and was a member of the St. George Chamber of Commerce. Maiben inherited his green thumb from his mother. He raised an enormous garden for over 70 years and was still working in his garden three weeks ago. He tried different and even exotic varieties of fruits and vegetables along with the usual corn, tomatoes, grapes and pecans. He is survived by one son, Arnold Carl Ashby of West Valley City, Utah; four daughters, Viola Rae Rosengreen of Renton, Washington, Selma Ann Johnson Brown of El Dorado Hills, California, Karen Lillian Ginocchio of St. George, Utah and Elsa Jane Picklesimer of St. George, Utah; 38 grandchildren; 74 great grandchildren; and a sister, Nina Rasmussen. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Elsa. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 29, 2005, 11 a.m., Bloomington Hills LDS Ft. Pierce Chapel, 750 E. Ft. Pierce Dr., St. George, Utah. Originally published July 26, 2005 Dianne Conner HURRICANE - Dianne Conner, age 62, passed away July 21, 2005, at her home in Hurricane. She was born May 12, 1943, in St. George, Utah, a daughter of Ted and Agnes Cottam Beacham. She married Robert McGarvie, and to this union were born five children. They later divorced and she married Pete Conner. To this union was born one child, and she and Pete later divorced. Born, raised, and educated in St. George, Dianne graduated from Dixie High School. She had an artistic flair and was always decorating or redecorating something. Dianne was known for her "green thumb," and she spent many hours working in her yard. She loved the Southern Utah area with its majestic red mountains and beautiful State and National Parks. Dianne followed politics and appreciated a lively discussion. A sincere, genuine, unique, spiritual woman with a great sense of humor was how Dianne was known to her friends and family. Her sister, Betty, remembers Dianne as being so understanding of others, always interested in what they had to say, and that she was truly her best friend. She was a wonderful mother and very supportive of her children. She is survived by her children: Michael (Heather) McGarvie, of St. George, UT; Brenda Christensen, of Farmington, NM; the twins, Donald (Alicia) McGarvie, of Hurricane, UT, and Patrick (Kimberly) McGarvie, of LaVerkin, UT; and Jimmy Conner, of St. George, UT; nine grandchildren; and two sisters, Eleanor (Wayne) Lee and Betty (Gary) Carter, both of St. George, UT. She is preceded in death by her parents, Ted and Agnes, daughter, Betty McGarvie, and grandson, Daniel McGarvie. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 26, 2005, at 12:00 noon at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 2260 E. Originally published July 26, 2005 Cleo B. Johnsen BOUNTIFUL - Cleo Bonnie Johnsen, our beloved mother and grandmother left this mortal life on Sunday, July 24, 2005. Cleo passed away peacefully at her home in Bountiful, Utah surrounded by loving family. Cleo was the second of twelve children, born to Eldon and Velda Johnson in Victor, Idaho on November 15, 1924. She graduated from Victor High School and attended the nursing school at the LDS Hospital in Idaho Falls, Idaho. She married Dell Earl Johnsen in the Logan Temple June 26, 1944. Cleo was a faithful, life long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and became a pioneer in her own right when she left her beloved Idaho and moved to Liberty, Missouri with her husband and children in 1957.There she served tirelessly in many Church callings, and gave devoted support to her husband in his service as Bishop and Stake President.After raising her eight children, she and Dell served LDS missions in both the Dallas and Stockholm, Sweden temples. Cleo will be remembered for her simple but powerful example of hard work, faith, and the power of prayer.This legacy of faithfulness has blessed and will continue to bless generations of her family. Originally published July 26, 2005 Joseph Kay Sandberg CEDAR CITY - Joseph Kay Sandberg, 61, passed away on July 21, 2005 in Millford, Utah. He was born June 30, 1944 in Salt Lake City to Joseph Clarence Sandberg and Anna Marie Hermansen. He married Dianne Rogerson on Sept 4, 1964 in Parowan, Utah. They had two children, JoAnne and Jodi Kaye. He later married Carol Ann Martin Smith on February 7, 1972. They had a son, Joe Karl Sandberg. Joseph Kay Sandberg was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and spent his early life on the Sandberg Ranch in John's Valley. He loved fishing, hunting, and taking care of animals. He worked as a surveyor for Sandberg Engineers, on construction of Cedar High School, and 18 plus years for the Union Pacific Railroad. He attended Cedar High School where he played the trumpet in the band. After graduating from high school he attended the University of Utah. He is survived by his children JoAnne (Bryan) Symonette of Salt Lake City, Jodi Kaye (Justin) Starr, Joe Karl Sandberg and 6 grandchildren. Sisters, Marie S. Memmott, Ruth S. Webb and brothers James C. Sandberg (Marba) and Rex D. Sandberg (Grace). He is preceded in death by his parents, Avon S. Parry Kelley (sister), Merrill G. Originally published July 26, 2005 Toolefua Sosoli Toolefua Sosoli was born April 24, 1975 in Motootua, Samoa to Reverend Iupeli and Kuini Sosoli. He married Jadelyn Tapusoa - Sosoli in Aua, American Samoa on May 25, 1996. Toolefua graduated from Marist Brothers High School in Malaeloa, American Samoa, 1993. He went on to receive his Bachelors of Education from the University of Hawaii in 2002. He lived in St. George for only 11 months and made many friends. He enjoyed making others laugh. He loved to watch sports and sing Samoan songs. He is survived by his wife Jadelyn T. Sosoli, his daughter Khryslin Kekaimaunalua Soloau Sosoli, his sisters, Lupe, Vinepa, Maniseta, and Fagamalo, his brother, Iusitini and Oteta and his parents, Reverend Iupeli and Kuini Sosoli. Originally published July 26, 2005 SFC Ronald Tanner Wood CEDAR CITY - Sergeant First Class Ronald Tanner Wood of the Utah Army National Guard was born in Provo, Utah on February 17, 1977. A member of the Bravo Battery 1st Battalion 148th Field Artillery in Brigham City, he was serving his country in Operation Iraqi Freedom. SFC Wood was riding in an armored vehicle that was hit by a roadside explosive device on July 16 in Kirkuk, Iraq, and SFC Wood was killed. In November, 1994, during his senior year at Cedar High School, SFC Ron Wood became a member of the Headquarters Battery 2nd Battalion 222nd Field Artillery in Cedar City. He was a member of the 222nd when they were activated near the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and shortly after his return from that activation he became a member of the 148th Field Artillery in Brigham City. The son of Ron and Jody Wood, former Cedar City residents, Ron is the oldest of five children. His younger siblings are: SPC Nathan Wood of the Utah Army National Guard, Lehi, Utah; Julie (Aaron) Langreder, Canon City, Colorado; Cody Wood, Canon City, Colorado; Johnny Wood, Canon City, Colorado. Ron is the uncle of Brody, Alandra, and Wayne Langreder, and the grandson of Ann Like and the deceased Jim Like, all of Canon City, Colorado. He is also the grandson of the deceased Dwane and Luise Wood of Las Vegas, Nevada. Ron Wood also has uncles, aunts, and cousins in Utah, Colorado, and Nevada. Ron liked to laugh and enjoy life. He enjoyed reading books, listening to music, bodybuilding, weight lifting, and running. Ron was always concerned about everyone else's needs, and wanted to make sure that his family was happy. He was proud to be a U. S. Army soldier, and he was dedicated and loyal to his fellow soldiers until the end of his life. SFC Ronald Tanner Wood was a true blue national hero, and he will be sorely missed by his family, friends, and fellow soldiers. Funeral Services will be held at the Cedar High School Auditorium, Tuesday, July 26, 2005 at 12:00 noon.
