She was born on November 20, 1914 in Parowan, Utah to Samuel J. Whitney and Winnifred B. Whitney, and died on July 25, 2005 in Las Vegas, Nevada at 90 years of age. She is survived by her five children, Val E. (Norma G.) Bettridge, Hurricane, UT, Alma RaNae B. (Bevan) Ott, Highland, UT, June Ann B. (Randy) Adams, Las Vegas, NV, Keith W. (Dani Jo B.) Bettridge, Haines, AK, James Criag (Susan L.) Bettridge, Hurricane, UT, and 22 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren, and 10 great-great grandchildren. She married Alma Bettridge on February 23, 1933 in Cedar City, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the St. George Temple. Alma died on April 8, 1984 in Las Vegas, Nevada. She is also survived by her sisters Ethel W. (Morgan - deceased) Slack, Constance W. (Lyle) Halterman, Patricia Joy W. (Eugene) Orton, and her sister-in-law Marion T. Whitney, and her brothers Samuel James (Glyde G.) Whitney, and Garth B. (Barbara B.) Whitney. Preceded in death by her brothers Gaylord B. (Elizabeth C.) Whitney, and Richard B. (Marion T.) Whitney, and sisters Edythe W. (Phillip) Klingonsmith. Roma was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many positions of leadership in that organization. She served as the President of the Stake Relief Society in the Hurricane, Utah Stake, and worked as a strong supporter of her husband as he served as the bishop of the St. George Second Ward of the St. George, Utah Stake. She especially enjoyed working with the Young Women of the church and served in a number of leadership positions in the YWMIA program on both the ward and stake level. Roma loved her family deeply and dedicated her life to serving them. She also especially loved and appreciated her brothers and sisters and their families, and she had many special friends that she helped and supported in many ways. Graveside services honoring her exceptional life will be held in the Parowan, Utah Cemetery at 12:00 noon on Friday, July 29, 2005. Interment will be in the Parowan Cemetery. GEORGE, Utah - Edwin Charles "Ted" Jones, age 98, passed away Saturday, July 23, 2005, in St. George. He was born August 7, 1906, in Enoch, Utah, a son of Charles Edward and Ada Olivia Smith Jones. He married Melvina Gardner on April 21, 1933, in Ely, Nevada. Their marriage was later solemnized in the St. George Temple. They were the parents of five children. Ted's childhood was spent in Enoch, farming with his father and learning to shear sheep with his brothers. He attended school in Cedar City, Utah, and went on to Branch Agricultural College, in Cedar City, and BYU, in Provo, Utah. He has lived in several different places and had a variety of jobs and hobbies. He loved to be outdoors. Ted's woodwork and rock work were enjoyed by many. Surviving family include his: children, Lorna (Bailey) Muir, of Leeds, UT, Lyle G. (Grace) Jones, of Goldsboro, NC, M. LaVelle (Judy) Jones, of Elko, NV, and Rhonda (George) Mathias, of Westminster, CO; 13 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Melva; son, Kelvin Lee Jones; two grandchildren, Lornell Bowler and Peter Simister; and all of his brothers and sisters, Stanford, Elroy, Raymond, Belle Webster, and Ivie Williams. There will be a gathering Thursday, July 28, 2005, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Spilsbury Mortuary. Originally published July 28, 2005 Glendon DeMille HURRICANE - Glendon DeMille, age 82, peacefully passed away July 27, 2005 at his home after a long battle with Alzheimer's and Leukemia. He was born November 16, 1922 in Hurricane, Utah to Oliver and Eliza Hirschi DeMille. He married Pheobe Hannig on December 22, 1944. They were later sealed in the St. George Temple on April 10, 1947. Glendon served in the United States Army at the end of World War II. He worked for U.S. Steel at Columbia Iron Mines for 22 years. He also worked for the Washington County School District and the City of Hurricane. Glendon was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving as Elders Quorum President, High Priest Group Leader, Bishop's Counselor, and Stake Farm Director. He was a faithful home teacher and seldom missed a visit until his health declined. He also worked in the temple baptistry for several years. He and his wife Pheobe served as full-time missionaries at the St. George Historical Sites from 1988 to 1989. Glendon enjoyed farming, riding and training horses, and raising a garden. He kept an immaculate yard and was given the City Beautification Award twice. He is survived by his wife, Pheobe Hannig DeMille, and their four daughters, Linda (James) Nelson, Cedar City, Utah; Glena (Kelly) Wilson, LaVerkin, Utah; Francie (Kelly) Hansen, Layton, Utah; Julie (Stephen) Lemmon, Hurricane, Utah; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and a great-great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his father, Oliver DeMille III, his mother, Eliza Hirschi DeMille, and all of his siblings including: Noma (Gifford), Ivan, Raymond, Wilma (Imlay), Reta (Wakeling), Emma (Imlay), Myron, Leola (Fife), Elwin, Arnetta (Haider), Leila (DeMille), and Darlene (Olds). Originally published July 28, 2005 Frances Nelson Goodsell Frances Nelson Goodsell, 83 of Moroni, Utah, passed away July 26, 2005 in Provo, Utah. Frances was born to Andrus "J" & Evelyn Davis Nelson in Wales, Utah on October 24, 1921. She Married Mervin D. Goodsell on October 6, 1941 in the Manti LDS Temple. Frances was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served a mission in St. George, Utah. She had a strong testimony of the Savior. Her second home was in the Fairview mountains she loved so much. She had a passion for interior decorating and making her home and yard a place of beauty and comfort, she was also an artist and enjoyed reading. She also had a great love for her family and spent hours talking to and especially helping her grand kids. She is preceded in death by her father & mother and brother Dee. She is survived by husband Mervin, children Garry & Laurie Goodsell of Cedar City, UT, Linda & Ross Atkinson of Taylorsville, UT, Marsha & Clint Buttars of Moroni, UT, 12 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren; Brother Bryant & Ann Nelson of Orem, UT and Sister Carrol & Roger Sondrup of St. George, UT. Originally published July 28, 2005 Clinton William Jackson / Hattie Marie Jackson Hattie Marie Jackson died July 21, 2005 in Las Vegas, Nevada at Summerlin Hospital. She was born December 24, 1918 in Appleton Tennessee. Her parents were Mattie Lee Tucker and George Simeon Legg. Clinton William Jackson died July 23, 2005 in Las Vegas at Summerlin Hospital also. He was born January 1, 1924 in Yuma, Arizona. His parents were Mary Margaret Reilly and Justus James Jackson. They were married April 12, 1946 at Banana River Florida Naval Air Base. Marie was an accomplished Registered nurse, and taught nursing at what is now the University of San Diego. A former emergency room and surgical nurse and a head nurse in a hospital. Clinton was a pilot in the US Navy, on the Admirals staff running Electronic warfare for the pacific fleet and the war in Vietnam. A retired Naval Officer and the owner of his own employment company. They were both members of the LDS Church and served as Temple workers in the San Diego Temple. Marie graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in Nursing and English and Clinton graduated from UCLA in Psychology and from Pepperdine University in Business Administration. They both suffered heart attacks about 36 hours from one another. They are survived by a son Mark and seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services for Clinton and Marie will be held Saturday, July 30, 2005, at 1 p.m., at the Metcalf Mortuary Chapel, 288 W. St. George Blvd. A visitation will be held Saturday, July 30, from11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., prior to services at the chapel. Originally published July 28, 2005 Anne Marie Nevot 1919-2005 Anne Marie Nevot passed away at her home in Fountain Green, Utah, on July 24th, 2005, surrounded by her family, after a long struggle with Alzheimer's. Marianne was born on December 29 1919 to Kristine Kopcen and Athur Morville. She lived all her young life in her beloved Alsace Lorraine France. She was number 8 out of 15 children. She married Daniel Nevot after WWII and embarked on a great adventure with him. She lived in many African Countries in the '50s and '60s. Madagascar, Senegal, Congo, Ivory Coast, Morocco just to name a few, and of course France. Raising children in Africa was quite interesting and somewhat of a challenge. She was a wonderful dancer and her and Daniel danced under many a different starlit skies from Brazzaville to Canne and Antibe. She moved to Dallas, Texas in 1964 and subsequently to St. George, Utah and then Fountain Green. She loved gardening and always had beautiful roses. She spoiled her grandchildren to no end and loved them dearly. She got to know and fall in love with her great grandchildren Cloe, Rachel and Jonah, before she fell in the deep dark hole that is Alzheimer's. She is survived by her loving husband of 69 years, Daniel, her daughters, Rose France N Bertrand (Roger) St Cyr sur Mer, France. Pat C. GEORGE - Hannah Hegsted Wells Rose was released from her mortal body on July 26, 2005 at her home in St. George, Utah after a long life of love and service to family and community. She was born March 26, 1909 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the only daughter and third child of Victor and Hannah Grover Hegsted. Schooled in Victor, Idaho, as well as Salt Lake City, Hannah graduated from the University of Utah in Home Economics in 1931 and then took a teaching position at Hurricane High School. There she met and fell in love with George Wells. They were married in Salt Lake City in December of 1933 and sealed in the St. George Temple in May of the following year. In addition to raising four sons and serving faithfully in the Church, Hannah worked for a number of years as a County Home Management Supervisor for the Farm Security Administration while George farmed. She joined the faculty at Dixie High School and Dixie College when her boys were old enough to be at school, teaching Biology, Foods and Nutrition and Home Economics for 20 years. She was a beloved teacher who influenced the lives of many young students by her skills, as well as her warmth and caring. Like her Mormon pioneer women ancestors, she balanced her family and community/school responsibilities with service in many callings in the Church, including ward Relief Society president and temple worker. When George died in 1966, Hannah carried on the family responsibilities alone for 18 years. She met Horace Rose in 1984 and married him in December of that year, adding another wonderful family to her circle of loved ones. She and Horace lived in Bountiful and in St. George until his passing in 1991. She loved the time in Bountiful making new friends, renewing old acquaintances in her Delta Zeta Sorority, and attending U of U athletic events. Hannah was preceded in death by her brothers Marion, Rulon, and Karl, her husbands George Wells and Horace Rose, and her youngest son, Scott. Through her sons and beloved daughters-in-law, Mark and Marian, Gawain and Gayle, Gary and Marsha, Scott and Jillyn, she leaves a posterity now numbering over 100 who love her and call her blessed. With her marriage to Horace Rose came an extended family which included Robert and Mary Ann Page Gilliland and her children. Hannah's family wishes to express our sincere appreciation to Luz Diomar Diaz for the love and care given to Mom over the past 15 months.
