GEORGE, UTAH - Paul J. Rodgers, age 62, passed away in St. George after a courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday, June 7, 2005, surrounded by his family. He was born August 3, 1942, in Bountiful, Utah, the son of Paul W. and LaDell Brown Rodgers. Paul graduated from Bountiful High School. He served on the Salt Lake Police Department for seven years. He later received a B.S. and M.S. degree from the University of Utah. He graduated among the charter class at BYU's J. Reuben Clark Law School in 1976. He was a respected member of the Utah State Bar. He was also a member of the American Bar Association and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. One of Paul's dreams became reality as he was a founding partner in the Coral Cliffs Cinema 8 in Hurricane. Paul served five years on active duty with the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General Corp. Commander Rodgers was a Special Courts Martial Judge, serving in the Southwestern Pacific Judicial District, covering Japan, Philippines, Guam, and Singapore. Paul loved to serve in the LDS Church. He served a mission to the Samoan Islands, and held many leadership callings including: Bishop, Bishop's Counselor, Mission Presidency and District President in the Micronesia-Guam Mission. His greatest love was teaching the Gospel Doctrine Class which he did for 12 years. Most recently, he served as High Priest Group Leader and as a Temple Ordinance Worker. Paul sang with the Southern Utah Heritage Choir for over 10 years. He loved choir. Paul was active in competitive athletics most of his life. He played football in college and baseball in college and professionally. He was a respected high school and college Football Referee and Baseball Umpire. He was a member of the Southern Utah Officials Association and served as its President for several terms. He was an avid golfer and won many tournaments and leagues. He earned numerous medals at the World Senior Games. Paul also enjoyed the out-of-doors activities including fishing and hunting with his sons. Paul is survived by his beloved wife, Gloria Putnam Rodgers. They were married March 18, 1965, in the Salt Lake Temple. She was the joy of his life. He is survived by their six children, Major Paul William Rodgers (wife, Rachel), of Fort Hood, TX (currently serving in Iraq), Robert Daniel Rodgers (wife, Tonya), of St. George, Sgt. Richard James Rodgers (wife, Jeana), of St. George (currently serving with the 222nd bound for Iraq), Rebecca Bundy (husband, James), of Mesa, AZ, RonniJean Nichols (husband, Wade), of Gilbert, AZ, and Rachael Sinclair-Hall (husband, Stephen), of St. George; 19 grandchildren; 3 half- brothers, Hal Burgoyne, of Bountiful, UT, Dean Burgoyne, of Alaska, and Bruce Burgoyne, of Montpelier, ID; and a half-sister, Bonnie Wilcox, of Payson, UT. He is preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain Rodgers. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 11, 2005, at 11:00 a.m., at the Green Valley Stake Center, 511 S. Valley View Dr., St. George. Friends may call Friday, June 10, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., and again Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., prior to services, both at the Stake Center.
