He was born June 22, 1919 in Wolfe City, Texas to John and Edna Bass. On October 18, 1946 he married Molly Jean Williams in Inglewood, California at the Little Church Around the Corner. Jim served in the Army with the 3rd Division, 15th Infantry from 1941 to 1945 and earned the rank of Technical Sergeant. He saw action in North Africa, Sicily and Italy, making five different amphibious landings under direct enemy fire. Jim was awarded a Presidential Unit Citation, a Silver Star with a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. In 1950 Jim began his career teaching in East Los Angeles at Abraham Lincoln High School. After his retirement in 1978, he continued to keep active as a substitute teacher in East Los Angeles and then in Bishop, California. Jim and Molly moved to St. George, Utah in 1993, where he continued his involvement with the Masons, Scottish Rite of Bakersfield, the Military Order of the Purple Heart, the Society of the 3rd Division, the American Legion, the VFW Post 2628, and The Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife Molly; his children, Linda Bass, Kerry (Caroline) Bass of St. George, UT; granddaughters, Sarah Jane Pierson of Angwin, CA, Jocelyn (Casey) Sackett of Logan, UT, and Michelle Bass of St. George, UT. Sarah Jane will give birth to his first great-grandchild in May. He is also survived by his brother, Hoyt (Dorothy) Bass; and his niece Betty Bass of Studio City, CA. Memorial services will be on Thursday, March 10, 2005, 11:30 A.M. at The Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church Rose Garden, 611 N 2450 E., St. George, UT. In October of 2000, she was in an auto accident, and after a long recovery, moved to St. George to be near her daughter, Dorothy A., Hammett, a resident of St. George, and Duck Creek Village, Utah. Merrill Washington Ila Archibald Merrill, 62, passed away March 6, 2005, at her home in Coral Canyon with her family around her. She was born March 19, 1942, in Logan, Utah, to Eldredge and Rhea Loosle Archibald. She married Clark L. Merrill in the Los Angeles Temple on June 15, 1963. Ila spent most of her childhood in Clarkston, Utah, but later moved to Torrance, California. After high school, she became a reservation agent for Western Airlines and worked in the travel business for most of her adult life. She moved her family to Inkom, Idaho, for the majority of their childhood. She later moved to Hemet, California, where she finished raising her family and made many friends before retiring to the St. George area. She loved to travel, be involved with her children and grandchildren and working in all aspects of her church. She is survived by her: husband, Clark, who is currently living in Washington, Utah; children, Teresa, Brian, Kevin, and Scott; six grandchildren; mother, Rhea Archibald; and sister, Vicki Stock. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 9, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. at the Washington Stake Center, 446 Mangum, Washington, UT. Originally published March 8, 2005 Leland Paul Morrison St. George Leland Paul Morrison, 70, formerly of Marsh Valley, Inkom and Pocatello, passed away Thursday, March 3, 2005 in St. George, Utah, following an sudden illness. He had lived in Hurricane, Utah since Oct. 2004. He was born Sept. 6, 1934, the son of Leland James and Jennie Adessa Underwood Morrison at Marsh Center, Idaho. He married Ruth H. Jenkins in 1955 in the Logan L.D.S. Temple. They later divorced. He then married Mary Jean Christensen on July 1, 1973 in Inkom. Idaho. Mary Jean passed away on Oct. 12, 2002. He was an active member of the L.D.S. Church. Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 10, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at the Inkom, Idaho, L.D.S. Chapel with Bishop David Hunt of the Rapid Creek Ward officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening March 9, 2005 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Manning-Wheatley Funeral Chapel, 510 N. 12th Ave., Pocatello, Idaho, and on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the church in Inkom, Idaho. Dudley Alger our kind and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend , returned to our Heavenly Father on Sunday March 6, 2005, surrounded by his loving family at his home in Cedar City, after a long illness. Dudley was born February 28, 1934 in Enterprise, Utah to Alva Don & Pearl Barlocker Alger. He attended Cedar City High School where he excelled in Football. He joined the Navy at age 18 serving 2 1/2 years in the Korean war. Dudley married his Sweetheart Karen Beatty on May 19th, 1955. They were sealed for time and all eternity in the St. George Temple January 30th 1965. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was Employed with the Cedar City Corporation for 26 years with the Water Department. He excelled at bowling, and loved to play golf with his buddies. He was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge. He was admired and loved by all who knew him for his kind and gentle manner. Survivors include wife Karen, four children Dennis (Tami), Shelly Kay, Donna (Wyatt) McDaniel, Nancy (Penn) Leavitt, Brother Gerald (Julia Rae), Sisters Anna Gower, Sara Lou Maggard, 17 grandchildren seven great-grandchildren. He was proceeded in death by his father, mother, sisters, Vetta, Donna, Dora, and Brother Arlo. A special thanks to Maree Prince for her kind and tender services. Funeral Services will be held Thursday March 10th at 11:00 in the Cedar City West Hills Chapel (95 N. 2125 W). Originally published March 8, 2005 William P. Hamilton ST. GEORGE William P. Hamilton passed away at his home in St. George on March 1, 2005. Born October 22, 1921, Bill served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He married Bernice King on May 6, 1945 and they quickly made Redondo Beach, California their home. He joined the city fire department in 1948 and served 21 years, retiring in October 1969 as Fire Battalion Chief. He is remembered as an innovator and mechanic of outstanding skills. Bill loved electronics and pipe organs and played professionally in the Desert Hot Springs, Calif. and St. George areas following his fire department retirement. William and Bernice have lived in St. George for the last 13 years. He is survived by his beloved wife, Bernice and son, Leonard. At his request, no services are planned.
