Abbott MESQUITE - Lydia K. Abbott, age 83, sweetheart, mother, grandmother and friend returned home Monday, March 14, 2005. She was born November 2, 1921 in White Star (Moapa), Nevada to Jesse V. and Martha Velate Hughes Knight. Lydia married her sweetheart Lyman B. Abbott on August 29, 1939 in the St. George, Temple. Lydia was raised in Mesquite and graduated from Virgin Valley High School. She was a wonderful mother and homemaker, Lydia loved sewing. She had many cacti and plants, Lydia loved flowers, especially roses. She also enjoyed crafts and ceramics. She was an active member of the L.D.S. Church, served as a worker in the St. George temple and served a mission to Desert Industries. She is survived by her husband Lyman of Mesquite, NV; two daughters, Imagene (Ken) Carter; Jessie (Bill) Lee both of Mesquite, NV; four sons, Perry (Cherryl) Abbott of Mesquite, NV, Laren (Elaine) Abbott of Mesquite, NV, Lyman K.(Beverly) Abbott of Henderson, NV; Stephen Lee (Marci) of Centerville, UT; she is survived by 30 grandchildren and 53 great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter; two sisters, Rose Ann (Don) Shaver of Mesquite, NV, Melba (Philo) Sylvester of Las Vegas, NV and a brother Ferral (Mary Alice) Knight of Holbrook AZ. Lydia was preceded in death by her parents, a baby son, a brother, Victor Berdell Knight, a sister, Darlene Knight, three grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 18, 2005 at 11 a.m. at the Mesquite L.D.S. Stake Center. Friends may call Thursday, March 17, 2005 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Stake Center and again on Friday from 9:00-10:30 a.m. at the Stake Center. Interment will be at the Mesquite City Cemetery. Arrangements under the direction of Virgin Valley Mortuary, 702-346-6060. Originally published March 16, 2005 Ted D. Gelvin Ted D. Gelvin passed away Sunday, March 13, 2005 at the age of 64. Ted was born August 28, 1940 in Arkansas City, Kansas to Victor and Adeline Gelvin. Ted moved to Wichita, Kansas with his family as a young child and graduated from Wichita North High School in 1958. Ted joined the Navy after high school and served until 1961. After his stint in the Navy Ted attended the Wichita Business College through 1962. After Business College Ted went to work for Sauder-Lygrisse until 1965. Ted then went to work for Diesel Equipment as general parts manager. In 1979 Ted moved to Salt Lake City, Utah as one of the owners of Diesel Equipment bought another Diesel-Allison Distributorship and named the company Smith Detroit Diesel. Ted eventually became VicePresident of operations and retired in 2002. Ted, however, remained working with Smith Detroit Diesel as a consultant until his death. Ted moved to St. George, Utah upon his retirement in 2002. Ted also resided in Salt Lake City, Utah as well. Ted was affiliated with the Masonic Order, Albert Pike Lodge 303, Wichita Consistary, The Shriner's Lodge in Salt Lake City, Utah, and the Detroit Diesel Guild. Ted was also a member of the Shepherd of The Hills United Methodist Church in St. George, Utah. Ted is preceded in death by his parents Victor and Adeline Gelvin and a daughter Stacy Cannady. He is survived by a brother, Richard Gelvin of Wichita, Kansas, son and daughter-in-law Mark and Karen Gelvin of Wichita, Kansas; daughter and son-in-law Cathe and Jason Carr of Murray, Utah; son-in-law Tate Cannady of Wichita, Kansas, and five grandchildren; Daylee and Allie Cannady of Wichita, Kansas, Scotty Germann of Wichita, Kansas, Chance and CJ Snow of Murray, Utah, and two close and personal friends, Jim and Diane Herndon of Salt Lake City, Utah. Funeral services will be Thursday March 17, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at Memorial Mortuary, 5850 South 900 East, Murray, Utah. A viewing will be held on Wednesday, March 16, 2005 6-8:00 p.m. also at Memorial Mortuary in Murray. Another funeral service will be held on March 22, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. at the Calvary United Methodist Church, 2525 North Rock Road, Wichita, Kansas. Originally published March 16, 2005 Gordon 'Pete' Allen Peterson ST. GEORGE - Gordon A. "Pete" Peterson, beloved husband and father, died Saturday, March 12, 2005 in a tragic automobile accident. He was born on May 10, 1950 to Niles and Geneva Peterson of Fremont, Nebraska. Pete grew up in Fremont where he received his education and spent many hours fishing, hunting and playing football and other sports. Upon discharge from the Air Force and moving to Arkansas, he became an apprentice plumber and continued training to become a Master Plumber. He married Lana Plumbley and was blessed with a wonderful daughter, Kelly. They later divorced and Pete moved back to Nebraska where he received an associate degree in Business Finance and continued his plumbing career. Pete moved to Grand Junction, Colorado in 1994 where he met and later married Bonnie Dansie on November 4, 1995. He worked as a plumber for various companies, then started his own business mostly plumbing custom homes from 1996 to 2004. In order to live closer to family, he and Bonnie moved to St. George, Utah in July of 2004. He went to work for A-1 Plumbing & Heating Service. He loved being a service plumber and getting to know the local people. When not working, he enjoyed being with his family and grandchildren, attending their school functions, going camping, fishing and hiking. He was known for helping friends and neighbors with plumbing problems whenever he was asked to help. He was active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was President of the Sunday School in Morningside 5th Ward. He loved the Lord with his whole heart and lived the gospel daily helping others and attending the temple whenever possible. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; four daughters, Lisa (Eric) Jessup of Adamsville, Utah, Kristina (Jeff) Johnstone of Olympia, Washington, Kelly Peterson of Longview, Texas and Becki (David) Bartlett of St. George, Utah; three grandchildren; parents, Niles and Geneva Peterson of Fremont, Nebraska; sisters, Karen Marquette of Grand Junction, Colorado and June (Steve) Cardwell of Foutanelli, Nebraska; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 18, 2005, 11 a.m., Metcalf Mortuary, 288 W. St. George Blvd., St. George, Utah. Friends and family may call one hour prior to services at the mortuary.
