He was born November 16, 1916 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to George Frederick and Sara McIntosh Amend. He married Fern Holt on May 31, 1951 at the Hotel Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah. She preceded him in death on August 20, 1995. They had one daughter, Sandi, who is married to Bryan Snow and lives in Webster, Wisconsin. James received his public education in Pennsylvania and attended Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. He served in the United States Army for 39 months during World War II. James worked 30 years for United States Steel Corporation, most of those years at their iron ore mining operation in Cedar City, Utah. He worked 12 years as an independent insurance adjuster. As all who knew him well know he happily spent a considerable amount of the rest of his allotted time wet fly fishing. He is survived by his daughter, Sandi, 2 grandsons Nathaniel and Danny Snow; 2 grand daughters Kimberly and Sarah Snow, his sister, Sally Fulton of Lilydale, Minnesota and Phoenix, Arizona. He was and is a bright light in all our lives. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday March 22, 2005 in the Cedar City 16th Ward Chapel (1925 W. 320 S.) at 11:00 a.m.. Condolences may be sent through our Web site at www.southernutahmortuary.com. 435-586-4040 Originally published March 20, 2005 Charles 'Bud' Ames IVINS, Utah - Charles "Bud" Ames, dear husband, father, and grandfather, was welcomed into Heavenly Father's arms on Friday, March 18, 2005. He was born on September 19, 1929, in Hyrum, Utah, a son of Charles LaVell and Anna Winborg Ames. Bud grew up in Nibley, Utah, where he graduated from South Cache High School, Class of '49, and then received his Bachelor's Degree in Ag Science at Utah State University. He taught school for a year, then was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving in Germany. After an honorable discharge, Bud came home to his sweetheart, Annetta Thompson, and they married on July 10, 1957, in the Logan L.D.S. Temple. After spending a few years in the construction business, he returned home to Nibley and purchased the family farm. It was there that he and Netta raised their children. Bud was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Bud retired at age 55, due to health concerns, and moved to St. George. He loved hiking, visiting with friends, and spending lots of time with his grandchildren. Bud is survived by his: wife of 48 years, Annetta; four sons, Trent (Carolyn), of Meridian, ID, Jim (Holli), of Perry, UT, Carl (Leisa), of Peoria, AZ, and Dan (Denise), of Nibley, UT; one daughter, Tareisa (Anthony) Ashford, of St. George, UT; and 12 grandchildren, Jaxon, Tayler, Brenton, Avery, McKelle, Jordan, Jacie, Kamrie, Torie, Rudy, Tessa, and A.J. "Grandpa, we love you and will miss you so much." Also surviving is his sister, Anna Lavell (Orval) Hansen. His parents, one sister, Marie, and one brother, John preceded him in death. A viewing will be held Monday, March 21, 2005, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Spilsbury Mortuary. Originally published March 20, 2005 Edward J. Bellerose ST. GEORGE, UT - Edward J. Bellerose, 85, died March 18, 2005 at his home in St. George. He was born April 20, 1919 to Alphonse Bellerose and Azilda Labbe. He was married to Juanita Katherine Sands Bellerose for 58 years, who passed in 1999. He married Mary Helen Paolella on August 25, 2001 in St. George. Ed was an innovative restaurateur, avid golfer, and devoted family man. He was born and raised in New England and moved to the West as a young man. He served in the US Army during WWII, fighting in the European theatre. During his professional career, he owned restaurants in Southern California, Arizona, and Las Vegas. Ed loved the outdoors, even rafting the Snake River well into his Seventies and fulfilled one of his live-long dreams by playing the Old Course at St. Andrews at the age of 82. He was a dedicated member of the St. George Catholic Church. He also belonged to the American Legion and was the oldest member of the St. George Knights of Columbus, first joining in 1950. He is survived by his wife Mary; five children Carol Bellerose, Joe Bellerose, Lisa Allen, Theresa Guralnik, and Kelly Queensberry; 20 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 22, 2005, at 11:00am, at St. George Catholic Church, 259 West 200 North, St. George. Viewing will be on Monday, March 21, 2005, at 7:00pm, followed by a Rosary at 8:00pm, at Heideman Mortuary, 170 S. Mall Dr, St. George. Interment will be in the St. George City Cemetery. Originally published March 20, 2005 Gordon Harrison Dotson CEDAR CITY - Gordon Harrison Dotson, age 64, passed away at Kolob Regional Care Center on March 11, 2005 from the affects of Alzheimer's. He was born July 25, 1940 in Los Angeles, California, to Gordon H. Dotson and Phyllis Jeanette Costello. On October 9, 1961, he married Susan Carmen Lawson, who survives. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Los Angeles Temple. As a boy, he grew up in Los Angeles, CA, Compton, CA and Montebello, CA, graduating from Montebello High School. He was awarded a scholarship to play football for the University of Utah where he met his wife. He graduated from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City in 1963. In February of 1964, he was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as Elder's Quorum President, Young Men's President, Bishop's Counselor, High Councilman and High Priest Group Leader. He loved to coach Babe Ruth Baseball and Church Basketball. He was active in the community serving as the President of the Greater Medford Chamber of Commerce and on the Jackson-Josephine Job Council. He was also on the Economic Development Council for the State of Oregon. His one great pleasure in life was playing golf, especially with his sons. Mr. Dotson was Executive Vice President of Commonwealth Saving & Loan in their mortgage department and later was a mortgage broker. Survivors include his wife, Susan and five sons, Gordon (LuAnn) of Enterprise, Utah, Graydon (Michelle) of South Jordan, Utah, Eric (Polly) of Kansas City, Missouri, Sean (Shannon) of Portland, Oregon, and Randy (Kristi) of Denver, Colorado, his mother, Phyllis Dotson of Portland, Oregon and a sister, Jeanette Heltborg (Mike) of Washougal, WA and 19 grandchildren. His father, Gordon Dotson, preceded him in death. Graveside services for Gordon Harrison Dotson will be a 11:00 a.m. at the Hurricane City Cemetery. The family would like to thank the Staff at Kolob Regional Care and Rehabilitation Center for the wonderful, loving care they gave Gordon while he was a resident there. Also, we would like to thank the Hospice Alliance for being there through the difficult last days. You all gave Gordon such special love and care and we will always be grateful. Miller, age 88, passed away Saturday, March 19, 2005, in St. George. Fred, as his friends called him, was born on October 20, 1916, in Galesburg, Illinois, the son of the late Daniel and Meta Kiel Miller. Fred had one brother, Robert Miller, who passed away in 1983. Fred lived in Illinois until 1923, when his family moved to Casper, Wyoming, where he attended school. In 1934, he graduated from Natrona County High School. While in school, he played the trumpet with the school band and dance orchestra. After graduation, Fred went to work for the Russell Transport Company delivering freight. In 1937, he began taking flying lessons. Discovering this to be his passion, he continued his flying education and obtained a commercial pilots license with an instructors rating. In 1939, Fred moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he began teaching others the art of flying. It was in Colorado Springs that he met and married Betty Markam. They had one daughter, Diann, who preceded him death in 1995. In May of 1941, Fred moved to Ontario, California, where he taught Army cadets at the Calaero Academy. While there, he joined the U.S. Army Air Force, and with his background in flying was soon transferred to the enlisted reserve where he taught new cadets how to fly. He then moved to Lancaster, California, where he was appointed Flight Commander, teaching basic flight training in the BT-13 aircraft. After his discharge from the Army Air Force, Fred moved back to Casper, Wyoming, and started his own flying school. In 1948, Fred gave up flying and went to work for the Standard Oil Company. His marriage to Betty ended in 1960, and in 1964, he met and married Mearl "Laire" Wilson. Together, they successfully raised the three sons from Laire's previous marriage, Jim N. Wilson, Danny K. Wilson, and Gary B. Wilson. Fred and Laire continued to live in Casper until 1975, at which time Fred retired from the Standard Oil Company and they moved to Fallbrook, California. They lived there until 1980, when they decided to move to the Dixie Downs area of St. George, Utah. Fred loved to fish, hunt and play golf in his younger days. He was a loving father and stepfather, and was so very proud of his daughter and three sons. Fred was a member of the Community Baptist Church in St. George. He took a very active role in the church, holding the office of Deacon for six years. He was also active in the St. George Care and Share until 1997, when his health prevented him from taking part any longer. Your passing has left a void in the hearts of everyone you touched, but most of all, in the hearts of your family and friends. You will be missed, never forgotten, and always loved. Originally published March 20, 2005 Ted A. Rowland ST. GEORGE - Ted A. Rowland, 88, passed away on March 14, 2005, in St. George, Utah. He was born January 28, 1917, in Springville, Utah, to G. Amasa Rowland and Ora Desert Crandall Rowland. He married Hazel Stevenson. They were married in Provo, Utah on December 17, 1942. He was raised in Springville, Utah. He served as a pilot in the Army Air Corps 1914-1942. Ted attended college at B.Y.U. and Idaho State University and received a bachelors degree in Pharmacy. He worked as a Pharmacist in Springville and then in Southern California for the remainder of his career. He then retired to St. George in 1979. He enjoyed fishing, boating, camping and golf. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Hazel, daughters: Pam and son-in-law Jim Babbitt of Graeagle, California and Michelle and son-in-law John VanDyke of Grants Pass, Oregon, grandsons; Randy Babbitt, Jeff Babbitt, Todd VanDyke, Eric VanDyke. Great grandchildren; Kylie Babbitt; Matthew and Alexandria VanDyke. Originally published March 20, 2005 Edna Geneve Brinton Scott October 15, 1928 - March 18, 2005 RICHLAND, WA - Edna Geneve Brinton Scott, surrounded by members of her family died peacefully on Friday, March 18, 2005 in Richland, Washington. Geneve was born on October 15, 1928 in Idaho Falls, Idaho to Milton Huffaker Brinton and Sarah Edna Howe Brinton. She married Walter Stevens Scott on June 21, 1947 in Berkeley, California and were sealed for time and eternity in the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Geneve and Wallie were the parents of five children, Walter (Neva) Scott of West Richland, Washington, David (Sandi) Scott of San Ramon, California, Mary (Kurt) Flickner of Newark, California, Richard (Michele) Scott of Cedar Hills, Utah and Robert (Joni) Scott of Danville, California. She is the grandmother of 14 grandchildren and 1 soon to be great granddaughter. Geneve and Wallie raised their children in the San Francisco Bay Area. During their years in California, Geneve was the production assistant to academy award winning film producer Keith Merrill. Geneve loved movies and films, particularly the ones where her name appeared in the credits. She was a diligent and committed member of her Church. She served in many positions in the Primary, Relief Society, and Sunday School and loved every opportunity she had to teach. She contributed many hours of service to the Boy Scouts of America. Geneve and Wallie retired to St. George, Utah. After Wallie's death in 2002, Geneve came to West Richland, Washington to live with her son, Walter and his wife Neva. Originally published March 20, 2005 Ellen Thompson Sessions ST. GEORGE, UT - Ellen Thompson Sessions passed away March 18, 2005 from natural causes in St. George, Utah. She was born May 28, 1906 in Richmond, (Cache Valley) Utah. She was the daughter of John Thomas Thompson and Priscilla Covey Thompson. Ellen married Leroy Moss Sessions on August 29, 1927 in Logan, Utah and they were later sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on November 11, 1935. Ellen was an active member of the LDS Church and served for many years in both the Primary and Relief Society. She also served as a volunteer at the St. Marks Hospital. She had a talent for handwork, and won numerous awards at state and county fairs for her knitting. She is survived by her son, Glen (Beth) Sessions of St. George, Utah and her daughter Renee (Jim) Evanoff of Imigrant, Montana as well as many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter Lou Jeanne, parents, brother Clyde Thompson, and sisters Leone Smith and Lucille Miller. Amber met the love of her life and they were married in 2004. The special spirit of Opal May joined them December 31, 2004. Although their lives together were short, they shared more happiness than most will ever know. Steve, Amber and baby Opal had made their home in Cedar City, Utah. Amber is survived by her parents, Jim and June Ann Miller; brothers, Lance (Jessica) and Cache Miller, all of Panguitch; grandparents, Opal Miller, of Panguitch; and Bill and Bonnie Nelson, of Cannonville; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Amber was preceded in death by her grandfather, Reid Miller. Steve is survived by his father, Dale Smith and sister, Sandy. He was preceded in death by his mother, Esther May Smith. This special family will be greatly missed by all who knew them. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 22, 2005, at 1:00 p.m. in the Panguitch Stake Center (550 S. 100 W).
