She was born June 17, 1921 in Kanab to Mary Ellen Laws and John William Glazier Jr. She married the love of her life, Lewis Devon Jackson, on Dec. 24, 1938 in St. George, Utah, later solemnized in the St. George Temple. He passed away August 19, 2001. Ellen was an active member of the LDS Church and served faithfully. She greatly enjoyed serving in the temple in her later years with her husband. She loved the mountains of the Kanab area, and enjoyed the summer cabin in Bryce Woodlands. Her dearly loved her children and grandchildren, and had been looking forward to the birth of her first greatgreat-grandchild in six weeks. Survivors include daughters Jacki (Jess) Mickelson of Murray, Utah and Jerri Lyne Jackson of Kanab; brother Verdun (Shirley) Glazier of Cedar City, Utah; eleven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Devon, sons John R. Jackson and Lewis Devon "Eddy" Jackson, and brothers Karl, Leslie, Udell, Melvin, Theodore and Claude Glazier. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 25, 2005 at 11:00 AM in the Kanab Utah Stake Center. Viewings will be Thursday evening from 7:00-8:00 PM at Mosdell Mortuary and Friday morning from 9:45-10:45 AM at the Stake Center. Burial will be in the Kanab Cemetery under the direction of Mosdell Mortuary. The family wishes to extend special thanks to the neighbors, friends and hospice who have been so helpful and kind over the past few months. Originally published March 23, 2005 Bill Slack PANGUITCH - William E. "Bill" Slack, 80, of Panguitch, Utah, passed away March 18, 2005, in Panguitch. He was born May 27, 1924, in Highland, California, to William E. and Matilda Witmer Slack. He married Helen Miller, January 20, 1946, in San Bernardino, California. Bill served in the Marine Corps in the Pacific during WWII and was a Purple Heart recipient. He worked for Southern California Edison before retiring and moving to Panguitch. He is survived by his wife, Helen, of Panguitch; children, Martin (Barbara) Slack, Enumclaw, WA; Pamela (Walter) Mefford, Silverton, OR; Patricia (Jerry) Hamilton, Lexington, SC; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Cremation services have taken place and an open house to celebrate Bill's life will be held from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 2, 2005 at the family home, 185 East 200 North in Panguitch. Originally published March 23, 2005 Joseph Phil Thornton WASHINGTON - Joseph Phil Thornton, age 87, passed away Friday, March 18, 2005, at his home in Washington, Utah. He was born July 17, 1918, in St. George, Utah, a son of Edmund Taylor "Ted" and Jenny Sargent Thornton. On June 27, 1940, he and Clara Caroline Foote were married in the Manti LDS Temple. She preceded him in death May 30, 1962. Phil later remarried and raised a family of six children. Phil grew up farming with his father in Newcastle, Pinto, and Sutherland, Utah (Delta area). When Phil was two years old, he contracted spinal meningitis that resulted in his being hearing impaired. At age eight, Phil began attending Ogden School of the Deaf, where he met and married his sweetheart, Caroline. He went on to graduate with high honors in mathematics from SUU in Cedar City, Utah. Caroline and Phil raised their children, Charlotte and Joseph, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Phil worked in the State Capitol Building as Chief Engineer for the Utah State Department of Transportation, retiring in 1983. Those who knew Phil described him as an amazing man with many talents. He was an excellent draftsman. His greatest loves were his family and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He expressed his testimony and feelings of his heart through artist renderings. He enjoyed participating in many sports. Phil is survived by his daughter, Charlotte A. Thornton, of Diamond Valley, UT. He was preceded in death by his son, Joseph Phil Thornton, Jr. Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 24, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at the Spilsbury Mortuary Chapel. Friends and family may call on Wednesday, March 23, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., and again Thursday from 12:00 p.m. until time of services, both at the Mortuary.
