She was born August 9, 1937, in Bicknell, Utah, a daughter of Elmer A. and Ilda Duncan Johnson. She married Hartley Barney July 1, 1962, in Ely, Nevada. Born in Bicknell, Utah, Ester and her family moved around a lot, living in Washington, Oregon, as well as a number of towns and cities in Utah. She graduated from Emery High School in Castledale, Utah. After graduation, she moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, where she graduated from LDS Business College. After her marriage to Hartley, they raised their family in the Salt Lake area while Hartley worked at the Tooele Army Depot. Ester worked as a secretary and accountant at First Security Bank and Kennecott Copper, then EIMCO, until she retired in 1994 and they moved to Southern Utah. After their move, she became employed as a secretary and accountant for Basic Development, and later for Zitting Brothers. She was excellent in her vocation and great with numbers. Since relocating to Southern Utah, she and Hartley have lived in LaVerkin, Apple Valley, and most recently in Lava Bluff in Hurricane. Some of Ester's favorite pastimes were bowling, camping, and spending time with her grandchildren. She was a kind, gentle, and genuine woman who had a great sense of humor. She always took time to listen and comfort which endeared her to everyone as their friend. Ester kept an immaculate home. Surviving family include her: husband, Hartley; daughter, Leslie (Tim) Herrera, of Hurricane; son, Travis (Amy) Barney, of Hurricane; eight grandchildren, Tim "T.J." (Doni), Andrew, Melissa (Parker) Haslam, Alecia, Colton, Caitlyn, Kinlee, and Kason; three great-grandchildren, Collin, Ashlynn, and Aubrey; and two brothers, Ferd (Jo) Johnson, of Blanding, UT, and Deelyle (Lila) Johnson, of Bicknell, UT. She is also survived by her dear friend, Doris Williamson. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, William Wayne Johnson. The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff of Southern Utah Hospice, Cuma Johnson, and all other friends and family who have given their love and care throughout Ester's illness. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 5, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. at the Hurricane Valley Mortuary, with a viewing from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., prior to services, at the Mortuary. Originally published November 4, 2005 Phyllis Englestead Richins HURRICANE - Phyllis Englestead Richins, our beloved wife and mother was called home Thursday, November 3, 2005, at her home in Hurricane. Phyllis was born April 20, 1956, to Myrna Wadsworth and Hal Englestead. Phyllis spent the first two years of her life in Hurricane with her grandparents, Earl and Wilma Englestead. After that time, she lived in Las Vegas with her family until she was 12 years old. Her family then moved back to Hurricane where she attended Hurricane High School. Dynamic, creative, and hardworking, she was involved in every club, organization and event HHS had to offer. Phyllis had several jobs during high school, including: working at the Frost Top; waitressing at the Driftwood and Bumbleberry Restaurants in Springdale; as well as working in Zion National Park. After graduating, Phyllis attended SUSC in Cedar City, Utah, where she fell in love with her sweetheart, Gary Richins. They were married in the Manti Temple on August 14, 1975. Phyllis spent 10 years working at Hurricane Middle School as a Media Aide. She truly enjoyed her many associations there with students and faculty alike. After successfully raising her children, Phyllis began pursuing her educational goals. She graduated from Dixie State College in May of 2004. She was enrolled at Southern Utah University, obtaining a degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Library and Media Sciences. She was on schedule to graduate in the Spring of 2006, after which she planned to work 20 years, retire, and serve an LDS mission with her husband in Hawaii. Phyllis truly had a zest for living, recognizing God's hand in the many aspects in her life. Her faith, creativity, happy smile, positive influence, and refreshing realistic approach to life will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She is survived her: husband of 30 years, Gary Kay Richins; four children, Jennifer Smith, Bart, JakiLyn, and Warrin; three grandchildren; mother, Myrna Evans; and two brothers, Robert Iverson and Mike Englestead. Funeral services will be Saturday, November 5, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. at the Hurricane 10th Ward Chapel, 1125 S. 700 W., with the first visitation Friday, November 4, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the Hurricane Valley Mortuary, and the second visitation Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., prior to services, at the Chapel. Originally published November 4, 2005 Leona Julia Karren Wellington Leona Wellington of St. George, UT passed away on November 1, 2005. Leona was born in Salt Lake City, UT on October 21, 1917 and was raised in Lehi, UT. She was the 6th of 11 children. When she was one year old, the flu epidemic took her father. Later her mother married James Beverly who treated them very well. Living through the Great Depression and World War II built determination, character, and strong-will in this great lady. Leona received her education in Utah and California studying cosmetology and nursing. After completing her Associates Degree, she began working for Utah State Mental Hospital as a Youth Counselor. This experience was most helpful in counseling and advising her two children, their spouses, and grand-children through the years. She was a great listener; many pearls of wisdom, lessons, and unique phrases were taught in her kitchen over a delicious meal. She was an avid reader and kept current on world events. After retirement, she and Ted enjoyed traveling and visiting friends across the country. They resided in Orem, UT during the summer months and in St. George, UT during the winter from 1984-1994. In July 2001 they moved to St. George permanently. Survivors include spouse, Edmund M. Wellington (Ted) of St. George, UT; daughter, Sharon Lynn Wilkinson of Brookside, UT; step-children, Charlene Snelson of Fremont, CA and Scott Wellington of Norfolk, VA; brothers Blaine Karren and Curtis Beverly of Lehi, UT; sister Thelma Redmond of Monroe, UT, 13 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. Leona was preceded in death by her parents, William Karren, Magnolia Curtis, and James Beverly; sisters: Effie, Evelyn, Opal, Wilma, Meryle, Jerry; brother: Leland; son: Ralph Edwin (Butch) Smith; and son-in-law: Lyle Sherman Wilkinson. Family and friends gathered recently to celebrate her 88th birthday. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 5th at 11:00 a.m. at Cherry Hill 6th Ward, 1650 South 200 East, Orem, UT.
