She was born on March 27, 1911 in Monmouth, Illinois to C.C. McVey and Bertha McGuire McVey. She married Benjamin Chapman Briscoe on March 30, 1929 in Monmouth, Illinois. He preceded her in death on December 20, 1991. Hilda went to school and graduated from Monmouth High School. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Ladies Auxiliary to VFW, Rebekah, Civil Air Patrol, National Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs, and a volunteer at the hospital. Hilda was also the co-founder of Little League and Pony League Baseball teams, and was a Milford Municipal Airport Operator and Manager for 16 years with her husband Ben. She is survived by her children Effie Jean Auzenne of Santee, CA, Betty Louise Leeper of Waverly Hall, GA, Doris Yvonne (Robert) Baker of Indian Valley, ID, Clyde Chapman (Joyce) Briscoe of Bountiful, UT, Carl Raymond (Kaye) Briscoe of Eagle Mountain, UT, Nona Colleen (Bill) Johnson of Milford, UT, one brother, Leonard Sage, 20 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and 22 great-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin Chapman Briscoe, parents C.C. McVey and Bertha McGuire, and son Benjamin Hinton Briscoe. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 15, 2005 at 12:00 p.m. in the Milford Community Center (100 W. Center St.). Family and friends may call on Monday, November 14, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and on Tuesday, November 15, 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. both at the Southern Utah Mortuary in Milford, Utah. Originally published November 13, 2005 Robert Gordon Brooks Robert Gordon Brooks passed away September 16, 2005 at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington, KY. He was born February 22, 1917 in St. George, the son of William and Nellie Stevens Brooks. He is survived by his wife Florence Milbauer Brooks, his son Robert W., his daughter Mary C. Morton, his brothers Clarence J., Karl F., Joseph K., Antone L., and sister Willa Nita Derrick along with grandchildren, Amanda Gnehm Wood, Michael Brooks, Thomas and Brooks Morton, Nicholas Gnehm and Genny Brooks and one great grandson, John L. Wood. Robert attended school at Woodward Elementary, Dixie High School, Dixie Jr. College in St. George, then University of Maryland and Temple University while serving in the army. He retired from the military in 1962 after twenty two years of active duty serving with the 115th Engineers Cbt Bn, the 351st Engineering Construction Regiment and the 296th Engineering Cbt Bn during WWII and after transferring to the Adjutant General Corp. He served on the Post Headquarters Staff at Fort Belvoir, Fort Dix, NJ and Fort Ord. CA as assistant Adjutant General. He entered the Army as a Buck Private and attained the ranks of Private First Class, Corporal, Sergeant, Staff Sergeant First Class, Technical Sergeant, Master Sergeant, Warrant Officer, 2nd Lieutenant, First Lieutenant Captain and Major. He enjoyed military life, meeting and making new friends everywhere he went, and extensive travel. He was a member of the Rotary Club and Knights of Columbus. He dearly loved his wife and family and enjoyed his many friends, his church, travel, fishing and music. He enjoyed life and always had a deep regards for his fellow man. Many who met him referred to him as "the biggest man they ever knew." Full military memorial services will be held in St. George at a later date. Originally published November 13, 2005 Lowel Val Day Lowel Val Day, age 68 was taken from us on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 after a car accident. He was born on the 15th of May 1937 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Ezra Russell and Reta Evans Day. Lowel grew up in Hunter, Utah and was a proud graduate of Cyprus High School. Lowel obtained an associate degree in heavy equipment mechanics from the Utah Technical College in Salt Lake City. On the 20th of April 1968 he married his love, Edith Farnsworth in the St. George Temple. They settled in Beryl, Utah where Lowel worked in farming, through which he showed his love for work. He was a stalwart example of a law-abiding citizen and served in the Army from 1959-1961. Lowel's favorite past times were visiting with friends and relatives about the good 'ol days and checking out old cars (of which he could point out almost every make and model). His presence will indeed be missed. Lowel is survived by his wife Edith, children Brian (Heather) Day of Central, Utah, Scott (Amanda) Day of Ironton, Missouri, Valena (Tony) Carlile of Cedar City, Utah and Carolyn Day of Beryl, Utah, brother Russell E. Day of West Valley, Utah, sister Fay (Larry) Gonzales of West Valley, Utah, grandchildren Cooper, Casidy, Amelia, Austin, Colton, Kirsten Day, and Melissa Carlile, in-laws, nieces, nephews and others. He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Reta Evans and Ezra Russell Day. The family would like to thank all those who shared their condolences, love and support through this time of sorrow. Originally published November 13, 2005 Rhea Jean Bullock Jones LA VERKIN - Rhea Jean Bullock Jones, age 71, joined her husband, VerneKibbie Jones, in Heaven on November 6, 2005. She was born January 16, 1934, to NathanJohn Bullock and Emma Safrona Ellis Bullock in the Dee Hospital, Ogden, Utah. From birth, she was known as Jean or Jeannie Bullock. She was the second of ten children:Safrona Mae Bullock Clark, Pearl Bullock Clezie, Delilah Bullock Crowther, Robert "Bud"Bullock, Betty Bullock Morris, Vivian Bullock Rose, Phyllis Bullock Bond, Nathel BullockHill and Myrna Bullock Hoskins. Jean, from the time she was a child, was known for her wonderful voice and abilityto sing. However, rather than taking a singing opportunity in the Grand Canyon, she became employed at Hill Air Force Base building planes. In 1950, she moved to southern California where she met the love of her life, Verne Kibbie Jones. They were married November 20, 1954, in Las Vegas, Nevada, and then moved to Ogden, Utah. Verne andJean maintained a small successful business in Ogden, known as Jones Rental Yard, for over30 years. When she was asked why she never became a singer, her answer was "I want tobe a Momma." She was very caring and compassionate to every child, not just the seven of her own and two stepsons. Jean is survived by her: children, Teresa Jones Crowell, Kibb D. Jones, Preston E.Jones, Jimmy B. Jones, Toby J. Jones, Laura Jones Redford, Kimberlie Jones Weston;stepsons, Terry and Steve Jones; 35 grandchildren; and 44 great-grandchildren. Those joined with her in Heaven are her: husband, Verne K. Jones; sisters, SafronaMae Clark, Pearl Clezie, and Betty Morris; brother, Robert Bullock; sons, Kibb Jones andJimmy Jones; and great-grandchildren, John Yoder, Alex Shaw, and Joshua Shaw. Originally published November 13, 2005 James "Ralph" Kelson ST. GEORGE - Our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Ralph Kelson, passed away in St. George, Utah, on Monday, November 7, 2005. He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on September 20, 1924, to James Conrad and Mary Cleona Thorpe Kelson. He married Elizabeth Beagley July 5, 1946, in the Manti Temple. Elizabeth died April 28, 1985. He then married Marjorie Tate McDonald in the Salt Lake Temple on December 20, 1985. Ralph served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and worked as an Air Traffic Controller for the FAA for 32 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, and golf. James was an active member with the Barber Shop Chorus in St. George, and liked working in the Temple. Ralph is survived by his wife, Marjorie T. Kelson; his sister, Louise Luckart; daughters Kathryn (Fred) Katwyk, Karolyn and Connie Kelson; grandchildren, Rodney James Katwyk, and Whitney Elizabeth Kelson. He is also survived by his step-children, Brent (Linda) McDonald, Norman (Sydette) McDonald, Carrie (Tom) Brooks, Stuart McDonald, Arla (Roland) Eysser, Monte (Lisa) McDonald, Gae Sellers; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and close family and friends. Funeral services will be held Monday, November 14, 2005, at 1:00 p.m. at the Nephi Ward Chapel, 222 S. 1st E., Nephi, UT, with the first visitation Sunday, November 13, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Spilsbury Mortuary, and the second visitation Monday from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., prior to services, at the Chapel.
