He was born December 18, 1916 in Watertown, Massachusetts to David A. and Florence Lendt Thompson. He had three older brothers: Ralph, Howard and Harold. When he was very young, his mother remarried, and he was adopted by John W. Foley. He grew up in Moberly, Missouri, and enjoyed and excelled in football, basketball, and track. After Junior College in Memphis, Tennessee, he and a roommate hitchhiked to Alabama in 1940 to join the Army Air Corps (which later became the Air Force). He was a bomber pilot, and served in China during World War II. His plane was shot down once and he and his crew escaped capture. He later flew in the Berlin Airlift in Germany, the Korean War, and the Strategic Air Command. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1960. Tom met Mary Leone Haight while in Germany, and they were later married in Cedar City, Utah. They lived in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Cedar City, Utah, and Salt Lake City, Utah. He loved Mary Leone very much, and always spoke of their wonderful life together. He often expressed how blessed he was to meet and marry her - "the smartest thing I ever did!" After retiring from the Air Force, Tom finished his college education and taught 5th grade at Whittier Elementary in Salt Lake City for 18 years. After retiring from school teaching, the Foley family moved back to Cedar City. He was a regular volunteer at the Veteran's Hospital, in Salt Lake City, and a member of the Lion's Club. Tom had a fun sense of humor and a quick smile. He loved to sing old-time songs to his children and grandchildren, whom he loved very much. He taught his children to ski, and enjoyed fishing and camping in the summers. He enjoyed participating in and watching sports all his life. He was a kind, generous man who often stopped to help hitchhikers or stranded motorists. We will always remember his example of Christian-living that was taught him by his strong mother, and Baptist upbringing. He was preceded in death by his wife, brothers and parents. He is survived by his children Robert Foley, Cedar City, UT; Brent (Jacqueline) Foley, Williamsburg, VA; Craig Foley, Bountiful, UT; and Margaret (Rick) Maurer, Cedar City, UT; and seven grandchildren Rylan, Shaye, Nolan, Casey, Shana, Trenton, and Brandon.
