Originally published October 28, 2005 Vernon Everett Taylor ST. GEORGE, UT - Vernon Everett Taylor, 82, returned home to his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, October 26, 2005, in St. George, Utah. He was born on May 13, 1923, in Van Wert, Ohio, to Jesse E. Taylor and Beatrice A. Potts Taylor. Vernon was married to Grace L. Rasmussen on November 5, 1948, in Provo, Utah. Vernon spent all of his childhood in Van Wert, Ohio. His mother was killed tragically in an auto accident when he was just a baby. His father did his best to raise Vernon and his older brother, Kenneth, alone, but relied heavily on the help of grandparents, aunts, and uncles. Vernon later moved to Utah as a teenager. At 17 years of age, he obtained permission to join the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Pearl Harbor as part of the Harbor Defenses. Vernon saw his first action on December 7, 1941, when Pearl Harbor was attacked. He spoke often of his experience and the great sacrifices made that day by so many young warriors. Freedom meant a great deal to him. He later was transferred overseas to France and served in the European Theater. At the end of the War, he rotated home and was honorably discharged. Vernon later joined the Utah National Guard and was discharged as a Master Sergeant. Vernon met and fell in love with his sweetheart, Grace, in Provo. They later had six children three boys and three girls. Work took them to New Mexico where Vernon worked at White Sands in the newly emerging rocket field. They later moved to California and Hawaii with his employment in the space program. They settled back in Provo, Utah, in 1978, and Vernon found work at Utah Valley Hospital in the Engineering Dept. He retired in 1988, and Vernon and Grace moved to St. George in 1997. Vernon loved to read, and science and geology were his favorites. He often spent late nights troubleshooting TV and electronics in the basement of his Provo home. Vernon loved a challenge. Genealogy soon became his passion and he spent many hours on the computer, trying to put the pieces of information together for his family. He often helped total strangers in reuniting with old war buddies. Vernon was briefly a member of the St. George Chapter of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Assn. He is survived by his: wife, Grace, of St. George; sons, Jerry (Denise), of Newbury Park, CA, David, of St. George, and Kevin (Carolyn), of St. George; daughters, Marian (Gary), of American Fork, UT, Joanne (Thierry), of Las Vegas, NV, and Dena (John), of Durango, CO; 14 grandchildren; and 7 greatgrandchildren.
