She was born December 14, 1926 in Ogden, Utah, a daughter of Niels Peter and Lillie Petersen Nielsen. She was the eighth of 14 children. Carmelia showed how she valued hard work from an early age on her father's farm to the day she retired in 2003. Some of the jobs she held prior to having children include, Defense Depot Ogden during World War II, the Union Station laundry facility that serviced the Pullman cars, the old Del Monte Cannery, and the Ogden Poultry Company. Every fall she would pick fruit in the North Ogden orchards. Once she had children she worked hard at home, and with her husband, Garth Shupe, helping him develop one of the largest home delivery routes for Cream O' Weber Dairy. Once all of her children were in school, she went to work for Hampton Superior Cleaners running their shirt laundry department. She worked at Hampton's until movin g to Kingman, Arizona in February 1976 where Garth was asked to manage Canyon Farms Dairy. Once in Kingman she hired on with the old Pony Soldier Motel, then switched to the Silver Queen Motel where she retired after 18 years of service. She always took pride in doing quality work and passed on that legacy to her posterity. Kingman quickly became home as they got used to the desert and were actively involved in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including the then Kingman 2nd Ward, then the Kingman 3rd Ward, and finally the Manzanita Ward. She and Garth also attended the Wickieup Branch for several years on assignment as Stake Missionaries. Carm loved to attend the temple. While living in Ogden, she and Garth made regular trips to the Logan Temple, and later the Ogden Temple. After moving to Arizona she made numerous, usually monthly, visits to the St. George, Utah Temple and later to the Las Vegas, Nevada Temple. While her church service meant everything to her, she thorou ghly enjoyed serving her family. She especially enjoyed making mountains of pancakes for her grandchildren, now numbering 23. Carmelia returned to the Ogden area in January 2003 residing initially with her daughter in Roy. Within a month she suffered a stroke requiring her to reside at Heritage Park. Her health remained relatively stable until June 2005 allowing her to enjoy frequent visits and reunions. Her cheerful, positive attitude brightened the day of anyone she came in contact with.
