OGDEN - Dortha Caroline Larsen Bell, a loving mother, wife and grandmother, and a long time resident of North Ogden (1939 - 2005) finished her mortal existence on August 6, 2005 and returned home. She was born April 5, 1916 in Mink Creek, Franklin, Idaho to Norman Junis Larsen and Gertrude Marie Hansen Larsen. Her mother died of diphtheria August 6, 1917 and her father remarried October 2, 1919 to Viola Barlow who provided her with a sister, Hortense, and six brothers, Vaughan, Doran, Blaine, Raylo, Gerald, and Bryce. She grew to womanhood in Mink Creek and gradated from Preston High in 1934. She attended Utah State University in Logan in the fall of 1935. She married Darrell Alma Bell, October 4, 1937 in the Salt Lake Temple. They made their first home in Liberty, where Darrell worked for Edwin Nelson. They moved to their present home in North Ogden in 1939. She and Darrell were active in square dancing and performed and taught throughout Northern Utah and Eastern Idaho. Dortha was employed by the Wonder Bread Bakery in Ogden at their outlet store for many years and then as a cook for the Weber County School District at the North Ogden Elementary School. Her interaction with the children over many years was one of the highlights of her life. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in various callings in the Primary Association including president and in the Cub Scout program. She was active in the Relief Society and served as a faithful visiting teacher throughout her life. She was an ordinance worker in the Ogden Temple for 12 years. She is survived by her four children, Norman (Patricia) Bell, Whiterocks, Utah; Narlene (Ronald) Baird, Washington Terrace; Richard (LaWanna) Bell, Farr West; and Kent (Karen) Bell, North Ogden; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 11 step grandchildren; 26 step-great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are her sister, Hortense Lester of Midvale, U T; and three brothers, Doran Barlow, So. Ogden; Blaine Larsen, Seattle, WA; and Raylo Larsen, Mink Creek, ID. She was preceded in death by her husband, Darrell, and brothers Gerald, Bryce, and Vaughan. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 11, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at Myers Mortuary Chapel in Ogden, 845 Washington Blvd. Friends and family may call Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the mortuary. Delmar D. Bonney Sr.Together Again OGDEN - The sparkle in his deep blue eyes, and quiet soft voice, have passed from this life, as the dearest man we've ever known, our dad, Delmar Dean Bonney, Sr. left this world on Monday, August 8, 2005, to be welcomed home by our Precious Heavenly Father. Delmar was the second child born to Virginia Katherine and Clifford LeRoy Bonney, Sr. in North Platte, Nebraska, on February 11, 1930. He attended North Platte schools, graduating from North Platte High. Delmar married his beautiful high school sweetheart, Phyllis LaNola Smith, on August 28, 1949. They were married for 34 precious years, until cancer took her life on August 8, 1983. Phyllis was his world, the one and only true love of his life, the sweetest love he'd ever known! Together they raised six children. He was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in North Platte, Nebraska and the Elim Lutheran Church in Ogden. He was also a 32nd degree Mason. He served in the State National Guards for three years. Delmar worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for 46 years, first in North Platte, then transferring to Ogden in 1957. He retired at age 62. He resided in Roy from 1958 to 1988, then moved to Ogden. When younger, our dad loved to hunt, fish, and played all sports. He continued to enjoy watching, especially the Utah Jazz and the Nebraska "Big Red", Dad bowled on many leagues and won several trophies. Our dad was a good, quiet, reserved man with great wisdom. He was always there when we needed him and he will be greatly missed, but knowing the joy he will feel seeing our mother again is overwhelming. We believe their love will truly light the heavens! The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff at Ogden Regional Medical Center. East, Susan OGDEN - Susan Sarah Benedict East, 96, passed away Monday, Aug. 8, 2005 at her home in Ogden. She was born Feb. 11, 1909 in West Weber, a daughter of William Jesse Benedict and Mary Vilate Cox. She married Myron East on Dec. 18, 1929 in Ogden. He preceded her in death on January 18, 1992. She was a member of the LDS Church, where she enjoyed performing temple work. Surviving are one son and one daughter; Edwin East and Norma Derrick, both of Ogden; eight grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by 4 sisters and two brothers. Gallegos, Robert Ernesto LAYTON - Robert Ernesto Gallegos, 56, passed away Saturday, August 6, 2005 at Davis Hospital and Medical Center. He was born February 6, 1949 in Taos, New Mexico the son of Jose and Emilia Gallegos and raised in Utah. Bob was a veteran of the Vietnam War where he received a Purple Heart serving in the Army. He worked at H.A.F.B. as a sandblaster, where he retired after twenty years. Bob graduated from Weber High School where he played football, baseball, track, and was a member of the wrestling team. He liked fishing, camping, and spending time with his nieces. Surviving are his nieces, Elaine, Patricia, Felina and Mika all of Layton. Gerritson, June Lee June Lee Gerritson passed away August 8, 2005 from complications of surgery. June was born June 24, 1915, the first of three children born to John A. and Elizabeth Lee, in Tooele, Utah. Her family moved to Ogden, Utah in 1920. She attended all Ogden City Schools. She was an active member of the L.D.S, Church. She married George Gerritson July 6, 1936. He died on August 7, 1960. She worked for Wonder Bread, the Ogden Arsenal, L.R. Samuels, and Aurbachs clothing store. Her hobbies were sewing, reading, gardening, cooking, and ceramics. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Georgia (Jon) Freston and Geri (Charles) Kent, three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Betty J. Hancock (80) entered the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Thursday, August 4, 2005. Betty was born in St. Joseph, Missouri in 1925. She was the daughter of Harry and Celestine Trickett. She later moved to Ogden, Utah with her family. Betty was employed in Ogden at the I.R.S. and the U.S. Forest Service. She moved to Spokane, Washington in 1980. Betty was preceded in death by her husbands; Jack R. Hammer, Robert Berry and Keith Hancock; sisters, Katherine Parham and Mary Augustine, and brothers Albert and Frank Trickett. She is survived by her children Linda Brown and husband Keith of Hemet, California, Jeanenne Vigil and husband Richard, Max Hammer, Jacqueline Forness and husband Michael, all of Spokane, and sister Shirley Moss of Strasberg, Virginia and 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Betty was a wonderful mother, a faithful friend, a loving grandmother, sister and a faithful prayer warrior. She attended South Hill Bible Church. She w ill be remembered for her loving and generous spirit. She exemplified the qualities in first Corinthians chapter 13, loving, kind, patient, and persevering. Heyder, Joan Hickman SNOWVILLE, Utah - Joan Hickman Heyder, 78, of Snowville, passed away, Monday, August 8, 2005 at home. Joan was born July 24, 1927 in Ogden, Utah a daughter of Dan Adams and Ada A. Wright Hickman. She married William A. Heyder January 9, 1948. Their marriage was solemnized July 20, 1973 in the Logan LDS Temple. He died May 5, 1988. Joan was the postmaster in Snowville for 39 years. Joan was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, having served in many auxiliaries and family history extraction. She was a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and served as secretary. Surviving are her children: William A. Jr. (Kathy), Snowville; Dan E. (Jeanie), White Sulphur Springs, MT; James W., Timothy L. (Lori) both of Snowville; Barbara J. (Joel) Shuman, Tremonton; and Jayne A. (Alvin) Robbins ,Stone, ID; 18 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Also surviving are her brother, Warren (Marilyn) Hickman, Murrietta, CA and sister, Margaret Plum, Salt Lake City. We will miss him terribly and we mourn his early exit from this life. He loved the outdoors where he could hunt, ride bikes but his first love was fishing; so much so, that he wanted to make a profession of it. He also enjoyed football, wrestling, skateboarding and bowling. He excelled in all he did. David will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He was known for his sense of humor and dry wit. It will always be his big heart that we will remember. To know him was to love him. No words can properly express our love or loss of this good and loving young man. He is our shooting star. Nelson, Agnes Agnes "Butch" Nelson passed away Friday August 5, 2005. She was born October 30, 1924 to Arthur and Minnie Nelson at Federal Dam, Minnesota. The family moved to Deer River, Minnesota in 1930. While attending school in Deer River, she participated in Band, Glee Club, 4H, Girl Scouts, the school paper, and was Jr. Class officer. After graduating from high school in June of 1942, she went to Santa Monica, California to work for Douglas Aircraft as a sheet metal worker during World War II. She came to Utah in 1951 to work at Hill Air Force Base as a sheet metal worker. She was an Aircraft Sheet Metal Foreman on the Aircraft Repair lines when she retired after 35 years in January 1987. She enjoyed working on and around aircraft of all kinds. After retiring she traveled and just enjoyed retirement until she had a heart attack in March 1993. She was also a member of the Methodist Church and American Legion Auxilary - each for more than 50 years. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Wallace (Alyce) Omer, Roy, UT., and Mrs. Robert (Mary Ann) Northberg, Sr., St. Louis Park, MN. Three nephews; Dennis C. (Anna) Omer, Fremont, CA, Mark A. OGDEN - Kristen Ann Foulkes Potter returned to her heavenly home on August 7, 2005. She was born June 22, 1967 to William J. and Marla Gale Foulkes, in Ogden, UT. Kristen came to earth with a unique light all her own. She had a creative mind which could put experiences and thoughts to poetry. Kristen was able to take a bunch of branches and flowers and arrange a beautiful wreath or swag. Many homes over the years have been adorned with her lovely creations. Kristen also brought out the beauty in people with her talents as a beautician and nail technician. Kristen was very talented at a young age with violin, piano and guitar; she was a natural with music. She loved children and gave great service to her aunts as she helped with her younger cousins. She loved her beautiful nieces. Kristen loved animals, she had many pets over the years, an d she especially loved her dog, Boomer. Kristen had an infectious laugh which spread to everyone around her. She could make a whole room get the sillies! Kristen, thank you for sharing your "lovely light" with us! We love you and miss you! Riley, Clifford B. Clifford B. (Bud) Riley, passed away Sunday, August 7, 2005 at home surrounded by his loving family. He fought a courageous battle against cancer for five years, never complaining and still having the strength to care for his dear wife, Faye until she passed away on January 31, 2001. My dad was born on August 14, 1919 in Wellsville, Utah to George and Margaret Bradshaw Riley. He grew up in Ogden, but loved going back to Wellsville in the summer spending them on his grandma's farm. He loved his grandma Bradshaw's raisin filled cookies and never tasted any other as good as hers. He attended Ogden City Schools. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He married Faye Phillips March 11, 1942 in San Francisco and had to return to active duty the day of their wedding. He was proud to serve his country and returned to Ogden after the war ended. He was a clerk in the Ogden Post Office retiring after 34 years of service. He also enjoyed pain ting houses part time for a number of years. He had a strong work ethic and always stayed busy with various jobs providing our family with a wonderful life. He was the greatest father and husband. He had a fun sense of humor and could always make us laugh. One of the many qualities I admired most was that he was a true gentleman. He treated everyone with the utmost respect. He was very devoted to his family. He took us on many vacations across the United States. My mother and Father loved to go dancing and always enjoyed each other's company. After his retirement, my parents spent winters traveling in southern Nevada for 20 years. They loved being "snowbirds". He took great pride in his home and yard. Everything was always immaculate. He was very independent and took care of everything himself until he finally had to give in and let his grandson, Matthew mow his lawn. He gave his family his total support right to the end. He was still saving the ads for back to school sales he could pu rchase shoes for all of his great-grandchildren. Last Fall he bought 15 winter coats. Thanks for everything, Dad, I appreciate all the love and support you have given me throughout my life. I will miss those nightly phone calls. I love you very much. Surviving are his one daughter Debra (Craig) DeBoer, Clearfield; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren. Steele, Brandon Skye Brandon Skye Steele 1984 - 2005 Our beloved son and brother, Brandon Skye Steele, age 21, passed away August 7, 2005. On January 19, 1984, Brandon was born to Robert J. and Julie Christensen Steele in Salt Lake City, UT. He graduated from Layton High School in 2002, where he played basketball and baseball. He entered the U.S. Air Force Avionics Nav-Com program; he was honorably discharged to the Utah Air National Guard. He recently spoke of his dream job, which would be to be able to further his career with NASA. Brandon loved camping and boating with his family and hanging out with his friends. He was very intelligent and always willing to help others. He loved to tease, joke, and make others smile. He is survived by his parents, brother Shaun and nephew Collin, Grandmother Marilyn Olson, Grandfather Art Steele, Great-Grandmother Rose Isbell, Aunt Connie Cooper and family, Uncle Kent Steele and family, Uncle Richard Christensen, many cousins and many friends. Thurgood, Nedra Jane Steed Nedra Jane Steed Thurgood HOOPER - Our Mom, Nedra Thurgood, passed away Sunday, August 7, 2005 at her home in Hooper after an extended illness, during which she continued to set an example of love, strength, and endurance for her family. Nedra was born September 8, 1920 in Ogden, Utah to William R. and Janet Frew Steed. She spent her childhood and teen years on the Frew family farm in Hooper where she worked along side her mother and sisters to help provide for the family. She served as an officer at Hooper Junior High School and was a graduate of Weber High School and Weber Seminary. On May 5, 1939 she married her sweetheart, Newel H. Thurgood in West Point. They were later sealed in the Ogden Temple. Together they raised their family in North Ogden and Bonneville Park before returning to her family home in Hooper where Nedra was still living at the time of her death. Her husband preceded her in death July 31, 1978. She was active in the LDS church having served in many auxil iary presidencies as well as Sunday School secretary. Her favorite church position was Junior Sunday School Coordinator where she served for ten years. Her special love for little children manifested itself in that calling. She worked on many PTA boards as well. Nedra was also known for her humorous readings that she was called on to give for many years. She was employed at Sears for 23 years where she worked as manager of the ladies apparel department for much of that time. Nedra had a unique ability to make friends wherever she went. She was known among her many friends and family as a woman of courage with a wonderful sense of humor. She is survived by her six children: Janeal (Theo) Cox, and Brent (Linda) Thurgood, both of Hooper; Glenda (Jay) Gannaway, Roy; Margie (John) Fraser, Ogden; Steve (Sabrina) Thurgood, Luann Thurgood, Hooper; Surviving also are 12 grandchildren: Jeff T. Cox, Steve R. Cox, Lisa Lynne Cox, Mike S. Widdison, David B. Thurgood, Christi Bowman, Joe G. Hyde, Da nielle Vaughn, Julie Cadman, Stefanie Cragun, Kami Thomassen, Eric N. Thurgood, one foster grandchild, Priscilla Yazzie and 27 great-grandchildren with two more to be born in the next few months. Also surviving is one sister, Helen Taylor of Clinton. Utley, Jeffrey Jeffrey Keith Utley A Hero to Many Jeff Utley, an extraordinary man of brilliance, beauty, and kindness, passed away on August 5, 2005, in Idaho Falls, Idaho. He was 48. Jeffrey Keith Utley was born to Samuel Keith Utley and Glenna Lee Willoughby on January 5, 1957. He graduated from Granger High School in 1975. Jeff attended the Air Force Academy his freshman year of college; The Academy was a great source of pride for Jeff he loved his country. He then returned to Salt Lake, attended the University of Utah, and married his sweetheart, his greatest love, Kathleen Grace OLeary. Shortly after marrying Kate, Jeff graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in Chemical Engineering and embarked upon a storied career. Jeff possessed an unparalleled passion for his work; his desire for achievement was inspiring to his colleagues. He began as an engineer amidst the blazes and steam of the Plateau Oil Refinery in Roosevelt, Utah. He ended his career as a visionary, a creator, and a leader for one of America's finest companies. Jeff's path spanned the globe; from Mexico City, where he was escorted by an entourage of bodyguards, to Russia, where he shared his brilliant insights over vodka and caviar. Jeff served as President of the Utah Petroleum Association and Rocky Mountain Oil and Gas Association, and he chaired numerous committees for the National Petroleum Association. The man influenced the lives and minds of many across the world, and forever changed the refining industry. Jeff was generous with his ability and time. He taught many generations of young men how to win. He chaired several campaigns for the United Way of Davis County in an effort to improve local schools. Jeff cared deeply for the environment and acted on his convictions. Former Utah Governor Mike Leavitt appointed Jeff to the Air Quality Board and Solid and Hazardous Waste Control Board. More then anything, Jeff was the core of a universe filled with love and happiness, around which many f amily members and friends revolved. He achieved a supreme level of peace with his family at the cabin in the Uinta Mountains, smoking Cuban cigars, listening to good music, riding snowmobiles, and ensuring all were happy. The world is a lesser place having lost this mountain of a man. Jeff will be missed by Lamar and Cecilia O'Leary, who respected all that he gave to their little girl. The O'Leary sisters very much admired the honor he bestowed upon Kathleen. Nieces and nephews from both the Utley and O'Leary families have lost a wonderful uncle. Jeff is survived by his dearest wife; his greatest admirer and eldest son, Eric; Jesse, his infallible son and pal; his little girl, his princess, Stefanie; his great and loving parents; Sharilee, his protective big sister; his little brother and nearest friend, Glen; his playful and loving little sister, Suzanne; and Flying J, Inc. Glenn Vance died peacefully on August 7, 2005 after a long struggle with Alzheimers Disease. Glenn was born July 23, 1917 in Ogden, Utah to Herbert G. Vance and Belva Dawson Vance. He married Norma Wadman in 1938 and together they raised their two children, Kay and Michael. Glenn graduated from Utah State University in Logan, Utah, with a degree in Forestry. After serving the U. S. Forest Service, he worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad as a locomotive engineer for 37 years. Glenn loved fly-fishing, hunting, carpentry, playing the flute, and computing on his HP calculator. He shared these passions with his children, grand children, and great-grandchildren. His family members include; his daughter Kay (Dennis) Neuteboom; his son, Michael (Lucie) Vance; his grandchildren Dennis (Allison) Neuteboom, Mike (Donnette) Neuteboom, Glenn Vance, Laura Vance and Tyler (Shanell) Vance; and his six great-grandchildren. The family thanks the staffs of Silverado Senior Living. E astridge Care Center, and Hearts for Hospice for all they did for Glenn. Witten, Bernice OGDEN - Lorna Bernice Miles Witten, 92, died Friday, August 5, 2005 in Ogden of causes incident to age. She was born January 11, 1913 in Myton, Utah, a daughter of Edwin and Lillian Whitlock Miles. Bernice married John F. Elzey. They were later divorced. In 1939, she married Joseph H. Witten and he preceded her in death on October 15, 1976. She attended schools in Roosevelt, Utah and left high school to help her family. She later completed her diploma requirements at the age of 86. She moved to the Ogden area in 1940. Bernice was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen Ladies Auxiliary and a charter member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. She was also a member of the Lady Elks and Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. Bernice enjoyed ceramics, reading, bowling, golfing and playing bridge. Most of all, she enjoyed family activities. Surviving are one son, Lee Witten, South Ogden; daughter-in-law, Muriel Elzey, Ogden; four grandchildren, nine great-grandchildre n, three great-great-grandchildren, one niece, Teri Oros and one nephew, Kent Searle. She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph, son, John M. Elzey, two brothers and one sister.
