Sam M. Bailey "The Best Dad Ever" OGDEN - Sam died way to soon at the age of 45 at his home early Tuesday morning. He was born January 4, 1960 in Ogden, UT. He leaves behind his two daughters, Misty Bailey and Cherry Bailey; one stepson, Michael Kruitbosh; three beautiful granddaughters, Madison O. Bailey (Misty), Acacia J. Bailey (Cherry) and Alayna Kruitbosch and also his new found love and soul mate Pamela Vaughn. Also surviving him are his mother, seven sisters, three brothers and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Jerome C. Bailey; his brother and best friend, Scott B. Sprunt; his sister, Mary E. Smith and his niece Diana Droesbeke. Sam was a single father and raised his two daughters as best he could, we struggled through some bad times but gained the good times that are now memories never to be forgotten. He was the best dad anyone could ask for. Misty and Cherry were his entire universe and loved them so much and then he was given the most beautiful two grandbabies that he adored and admired so much. Madison and Acacia were the apples of his eyes and they were more than he imagined or hoped for, he loved being their "Papa". Sam had many close friends but he considered them family more than just friends, he loved and cared for them very much. He was the most unselfish person you'd ever meet, he would always lend a helping hand to anybody who needed it, it didn't matter what the circumstances were he was always there. Sam touched the lives of everyone he knew and loved and meant a lot to everyone who was able to know him and have him a part of their lives. Sam was a very special man to everyone that knew him; he was a very rare type of person, the kind you only meet once in a lifetime, He loved everyone and never judges anyone or had anything negative to say about someone. He just had a very open heart and mind that made him very unique. He meant a lot to the people close to him and he will never be forgotten. He touched his family and friends deeply. Bell, Doris Jane Doris Jane Bell, 81, of Clearfield, Utah, formerly of Connellsville, PA, passed away August 9, 2005 at St. Joseph's Villa, Salt Lake City, Utah. She was born December 21, 1923 in Frank, Pennsylvania, daughter of the late Arthur L. and Bessie M. Abercrombie Beard. Doris was a graduate of Connellsville High School Class of 1941, where she was an honor student, member of the basketball team and Girls Reserve. She attended the First Baptist Church when living in Connellsville and was a member of the Gold Star Wives of America. Doris worked for Gulf Oil Corporation and Nabisco Corporation, and retired after 20 years of civil service with the U.S. Air Force at HAFB in Clearfield, UT. In addition to her parents, Doris was predeceased by her husband, Retired M/Sgt. Joseph Vincent Bell and her brother, Robert A. Beard. She is survived by her son Barry J. Bell (Bernadette) and her devoted grandsons Anthony and Christopher, her sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Tony Carbonara, and daughter, granddaughter and great-granddaughter, Beverly, Amber and Grace Williamson. She is also survived by adopted son, Patrick Gotti (Carol), their children Jason and Jennifer, and Doris's many special nieces and nephews. Goodell, George Everett SOUTH OGDEN - George Everett Goodell died peacefully on Tuesday, August 9, 2005, at Ogden Regional Medical Center following a courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis. He was born August 6, 1932, in Ogden, Utah, to Everett M. and Sarah Burton Goodell. On June 3, 1956, George married Lida M. Christensen. They had two sons, Gregory and Michael. They were later divorced. On November 18, 1982, he married Georgia Stratford. George enjoyed a wonderful and fulfilling life. During the Korean War, he served in the United States Air Force. After the war, he was the administrator of the Weber County Hospital from 1965 to 1977, and until his retirement in 1998, George enjoyed many years working in the hospital administration field. In 1994, he put his administrative skills to work as the Mayor of South Ogden City, serving two terms. During that time he was chairman of the Central Weber Sewer District and was vice chairman of the Weber Consolidated Dispatch Board. He als o served in the Weber/Morgan Health Board and the Ogden Area Community Action Agency Board. George was an excellent cook and loved cooking for his friends and family. His grandchildren were the sunshine of his life. He was a complex, wonderful husband, father, grandfather, friend and is sorely missed. George is survived by his wife, Georgia, sons Gregory and Michael (Sheri), his grandchildren, Bailee, Maggi, Dallas, and Gretchen. Also surviving are one brother Jay R. (Claudia) Goodell and sisters Beverly (Melvin) Schroeder, Carol (Larry) Gardiner, Karen (Lynn) Rasmussen, and Janice Summers. The family extends heartfelt thanks to Doctors Jeffrey Abel and Chris Anderson and the staff of Ogden Regional Medical Center for their kind and compassionate care during his many hospitalizations. Gross, Robert Edward LAYTON - Robert (Bob) Edward Gross of Layton passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on August 8, 2005 after a courageous battle with Parkinson Disease, he was 73. Bob was born on September 15, 1931 to Willie and Newton E. Gross in Paris, Tennessee. They moved to Utah when Bob was 9 years old. He attended Davis High School. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He married the love of his life Darlene M. Naylor on September 20, 1950 in Ogden, UT. Together they raised six loving and devoted children. Bob had several jobs throughout his lifetime. He worked for the OUR&D Railroad, he was also a printer and a salesman. He enjoyed the life of a salesman the best, meeting new people and getting to know them. Bob had a passion for learning about World War II. He was always reading a book, watching a movie or a documentary about the war. He loved having conversations with his friends over a cup of coffee, fishing with his sons and a good "Jazz" game. He is survived by his wife, Darlene of Layton; five of their children, Teri (Frank) Bertagnolli of Clinton, Ron Gross of Layton, Nancy Benson of Clearfield, Kevin (Connie) Gross of Clinton Lisa (Gary) Ivie of Heber City; seven grandchildren and one great granddaughter. Harvath, Donna CLEARFIELD/HENDERSON, NV - Donna Norris Lucas Harvath, 74, our wonderful wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and friend was called to her heavenly home on August 7, 2005. She was born October 29, 1930 in Ogden, Utah, the daughter of Carlyle H. and Lucile Olsen Norris. In 1958 she married the love of her life, Robert W. Harvath. They shared 47 beautiful years together raising four children and traveled as a military family, living in Virginia, Texas, California and Germany. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She worked at Defense Depot Ogden and Hill Air Force Base where she retired from civil service. After retirement they moved to Henderson, Nevada and lived there for 18 years. She shares an excitement for golf with her husband and let him win most the time. She very much enjoys cooking and sharing recipes. She spent many years painting and crocheting treasures that are now windows in the past and keep sakes forever. She has a strong passion for her rose garden; she loves spending hours nurturing the fragile blossoms in the desert heat. Most of all she loves her husband and extended family and she cherishes every moment spent together. She is survived by her husband Robert, Henderson, NV; children: Michael W. (Jay'ne) Lucas, South Weber, UT; Dale R. (Donna) Harvath, Syracuse, UT; Karen May, Riverdale, UT; 18 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother Jay C. Hitt, Ford Joseph Ford Joseph Hitt SYRAUCSE - Ford Joseph Hitt, 52, entered the Promised Land Wednesday, August 10, 2005. He was born November 7, 1952 in Oneonta, New York, the son of Ford and Marjorie Hitt. He married Donna Genung, October 16, 1971, in New York Mills, New York. He served in the United States Air Force for four years and was a Vietnam Era Veteran. He graduated from Riverside School of Aeronautics in Utica, New York. He attended numerous schools of technology and received several distinguished graduate awards. He graduated from Weber State University with a B.S. Joe was very passionate about aircraft and loved working as an aircraft mechanic. He attended Woodstock and loved both Bob Dylan and The Boss. Music was his passion. He was a very compassionate, deep, and artistic soul - a huge dreamer. As a father he taught his daughters culture and had a spiritual connection with his daughter Brandi that was very special to them both. A devoted husband, son, brother, father, humorous friend and host, he loved hiking, gold mining, and entertaining friends and family. He coached both AYSO soccer and a men's softball league. He also created Syracuse City's slogan Looking to the Future. He especially loved biking and playing with his grandchildren - Brayden, Jenna, and Megan. He is survived by his wife Donna and his two daughters Dana Pledger, Riverdale; Brandi Hitt-Bergevin, Clearfield; his parents Ford and Marjorie Hitt, New York; and twelve brothers and sisters: Doug, Theresa, George, James, Lavina, Rosemary, Jean, Kathy, Sally, Mary, Donna, and John. Nielsen, Lyle Joseph Lyle Joseph Nielsen was reunited with his beloved eternal companion on the 9th day of August 2005. He died from complications related to age. He was born on October 13, 1925 to James Earl Nielsen and Elsie Maria Beard. He served in the Navy during World War II and received the rank of 2nd class radio operator. He was a member of the LDS Church. He served a three year mission to Mexico and spoke fluent Spanish. On June 23, 1950 he married Vivian Tippets in the Salt Lake Temple. They were together 54 years before her passing in April of 2004. He missed her terribly. Lyle retired from Hill Air Force Base after many years of working in the field of electrical repairs. He had a beautiful, tenor voice and loved music. As a youth he shared his singing talent and love for music by singing with a group of talented singers. For a short time, he ran a television repair service out of his home. He is survived by his children, Eileen (Randy) Bills, Karen (Dewayne) B radshaw, Louannne Nielsen Olsen, Richard (Diane) Nielsen, Karla (Mike) Henderson, and Debra (Jeff) Isaacson, 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Folecia (Orion) Adams, one brother, Lynn (Catherine) Nielsen, and one sister-in-law, Beth Nielsen. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Vivian, his daughter Shauna Nielsen Josephson and his brother Gene. Ohlmacher, Glenda LAYTON - Glenda Ohlmacher flew home to the arms of Jesus on August 9, 2005 from complications due to lung cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family and friends. Her memories, lessons and love will live on. Glenda was born on Dec. 05, 1939 in Knoxville, Tenn. to James Edward and Gladys Emert Talley. She moved to Utah in 1982. With dignity and honor Glenda served her country in the U.S.A.F. reserves retiring in 1988. She opened Galaxy Talent agency and helped many actors achieve their dreams of being in commercials and movies. She was currently employed at Ogden Regional Medical Center as a PBX operator, a job she loved.Our Beloved Mother, God blessed us beyond what we deserve with a wonderful Mom who taught us by example not just words. You gave of yourself unselfishly and sacrificed without hesitation. When we needed you, you were always there. Even when it meant putting off your own days demand. You raised us in the ways of the Lord. Never letting us go w ithout knowing of God's love for us. You didn't just tell us, but you showed us how important family is and we will never forget. We listened to your teaching even when you thought we weren't. We will never forget the lessons you've taught and the values you've instilled in us. You will never be forgotten! Rees, Charlene W. ROY - Charlene Whitaker Deem Rees, our dear Mother, returned to Our Heavenly Father on Wednesday, August 10, 2005. Mom was born the third child of Lewis Eugene and Emma Charlotte Cole Whitaker on November 27, 1916 at the home of her Grandparents in Willard, Utah. Mom was raised in Promontory, Utah, on the family's dry farm. As a teenager, Mom spent the school years living with families in Brigham City, working her way through high school. Mom graduated from Box Elder High School in 1935. Mom married Justin Kimball Deem on November 21, 1935. They spent 37 years together before he passed away on October 14, 1972. They lived in Ogden, Utah; Idaho; California; Oregon; Colorado; and returned to Utah in 1946 settling in Willard, Utah. Mom always felt Willard was home and kept in touch with friends there after she moved to Roy in 1993. Mom married John Hansen Rees of Willard in Elko, Nevada on March 6, 1978. Mom and John enjoyed each other's company and traveled every winter to Arizona; California, and Mexico prior to settling in Circle City, Arizona and then in St. George. John passed away July 28, 1995. Mom started working at the Willard, Utah Post Office as the Clerk in 1959 and was appointed Post Master May 1, 1973, serving in that position until her retirement August 10, 1979. Mom was a very strong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She taught us through her example, to love the Lord and be thankful for his love and blessings. Mom spent over 25 years serving in the primary, many years in the Relief Society and was a visiting teacher for almost 50 years. One of Moms greatest joys was attending the Temple which she did on a regular basis. Mom's life was full of service to others. She was always the center of her family and her family was the center of her life. Mom had a gentle, sweet sprit - it was a joy to be with her. Mom is survived by her family of sons and daughters-in-law, Glen W and Karen Deem of Huntsville; Laren J and Leah Rae Deem of Bicknell; J Klaren and Bonnie Deem of St. George; Rodger W and Judy Deem of Fallon, Nevada. Also surviving are her daughter and sons-in-law, Marla and James Spear of Hooper and G. Blake Mortenson of Hooper. Mom was very proud of her 37 grandchildren, 66 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren, each knew they were Grandma's favorite. Through life, some of us were lucky enough to gain children through marriage and each and every one of these additions was fully counted as a member of Mom's family. Mom's heart was big enough for all of us. Mom is survived by her brothers, sisters, and in-laws Lilly Whitaker Littlefield of So. Jordan; Arnold Whitaker of Bear River City; Maxine Nelson of Layton; Norma and Harold Larsen of Brigham City; Darwin and Arloa Whitaker of St. George; LaVar and Colleen Whitaker of Concord, California; Florence Whitaker of Farr West; Lucille Deem of Huntsville and her numerous nieces and nephews. Mom was preceded in death by her parents, h usbands Justin and John, her son Curtis L, her grandson Jeffery Lynn Deem and her brothers Edward and Jarvis Whitaker. Mother was a very independent lady and she lived alone taking care of her needs almost to the end of her life. Each of us wanted Mom to come and live with us, but Mom would say; that's not my way - I need to stay home as long as I can. We love you Mother and miss you already. We would like to very sincerely thank those who took such wonderful care of our Mother, Dr. Gary Christensen, whom she adored. Rowe, Arlynn Arlynn (Ford) Rowe of Casa Grande, AZ died August 8, 2005 after a short bought of cancer. She was born November 30, 1934 to Zadok James and Hannah (Greenhalgh) Ford in Kanab, UT. She married James Anthony "Tony" Rowe, June 22, 1953, of this marriage six children were born: Gegory Paul Rowe of Palmdale, CA; Leslie Lynn Rowe of Ogden, UT; James Rowe (deceased); Daniel Anthony Rowe of Torrance, CA; Robert William Rowe of Orem, UT; and Marianne Rowe Klingler of Orem, UT. She is also survived by 22 grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and two step great-great-grandchildren. Three brothers, Jerrol H. Ford of Cheyenne, WY; Ronald J. Ford of Bullforg, UT and Edwin B. Ford of Farmington, UT. Two sisters, Patricia I. McCleary of Kanab, UT and Sandra Ring of Casa Grande, AZ. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, two brothers and two sisters Arlynn enjoyed sewing clothes and Halloween costumes for herself, children and grandchildren. She was an active member of t he LDS Church, reader of books, especially English History. After retirement, she and her husband traveled the U.S. including Canada and Alaska in their RV, went through the Panama Canal and to Alaska by ship. They setteled in Casa Grande, AZ in 1996. Smith, Louise Ann Faulkner OGDEN - Our loving mom, grandma, and great-grandma, Louise Ann Faulkner Smith, 88, passed away Wednesday, August 10, 2005 following a long illness. She was born May 15, 1917 in Ogden, to John and Mattie Byzeit Faulkner. Louise married Ralph Charles Smith on July 3, 1942. He preceded her in death on February 19, 1962. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she served in various callings in the Primary, MIA and Relief Society. Louise was a wife and mother first and foremost during her life. As her children were growing up, she was very involved in the school PTA, serving as President and in other positions. Following the death of her husband, she was employed at McKay-Dee Hospital and enjoyed the many friendships she made there. She also served as a volunteer for many years. Louise was fun-loving and always watched out for the lonely and sick. Surviving are three daughters, Leslie (John) Davis, Palm Coast, FL; Sunee ( Stewart) Folkman, Layton; Vickie (Ron) Lynch, Hooper; 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, two sisters, three brothers and two grandchildren. Thurgood, Nedra Jane Steed Nedra Jane Steed Thurgood HOOPER - Our Mom, Nedra Thurgood, passed away Sunday, August 7, 2005 at her home in Hooper after an extended illness, during which she continued to set an example of love, strength, and endurance for her family. Nedra was born September 8, 1920 in Ogden, Utah to William R. and Janet Frew Steed. She spent her childhood and teen years on the Frew family farm in Hooper where she worked along side her mother and sisters to help provide for the family. She served as an officer at Hooper Junior High School and was a graduate of Weber High School and Weber Seminary. On May 5, 1939 she married her sweetheart, Newel H. Thurgood in West Point. They were later sealed in the Ogden Temple. Together they raised their family in North Ogden and Bonneville Park before returning to her family home in Hooper where Nedra was still living at the time of her death. Her husband preceded her in death July 31, 1978. She was active in the LDS church having served in many auxil iary presidencies as well as Sunday School secretary. Her favorite church position was Junior Sunday School Coordinator where she served for ten years. Her special love for little children manifested itself in that calling. She worked on many PTA boards as well. Nedra was also known for her humorous readings that she was called on to give for many years. She was employed at Sears for 23 years where she worked as manager of the ladies apparel department for much of that time. Nedra had a unique ability to make friends wherever she went. She was known among her many friends and family as a woman of courage with a wonderful sense of humor. She is survived by her six children: Janeal (Theo) Cox, and Brent (Linda) Thurgood, both of Hooper; Glenda (Jay) Gannaway, Roy; Margie (John) Fraser, Ogden; Steve (Sabrina) Thurgood, Luann Thurgood, Hooper; Surviving also are 12 grandchildren: Jeff T. Cox, Steve R. Cox, Lisa Lynne Cox, Mike S. Widdison, David B. Thurgood, Christi Bowman, Joe G. Hyde, Da nielle Vaughn, Julie Cadman, Stefanie Cragun, Kami Thomassen, Eric N. Thurgood, one foster grandchild, Priscilla Yazzie and 27 great-grandchildren with two more to be born in the next few months. Also surviving is one sister, Helen Taylor of Clinton. She was preceded in death by her parents, step-father, Malend S. Jackman, two sisters, Lorna Charlton, and Ruth Mecham, one granddaughter, Ronda Widdison, and one great-grandson, Noah G. Vaughn. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the wonderful people from Alpine Hospice: Ron Jackson, Dr. Michael Jacobson, Brent Povey, Joyce Schrock, and Fred Large. We would also like to express our gratitude to Dr. Gary O. Christensen for his long attentive care. They were angels to our Mother. She grew to love them dearly. Valdez, our beloved son, brother, husband, uncle, father and friend, passed away peacefully on August 9, 2005 at the U of U, surrounded by his family and friends. Mark was born to Toribio and Carolyn Gomez Valdez on December 11, 1967 in Ogden, Utah. He graduated from Ogden High and was employed with Autoliv for the past 15 years. Mark was an avid golfer and cook. He also loved camping and spending time with his family, especially watching his sons play football, baseball, and wrestling. He also loved having BBQ's with family and friends. Mark loved all sports, his two dogs, Samantha and Hercules and he was a dedicated Oakland Raiders fan. On May 6, 2000 Mark married his soul mate, Virginia (Gina) Mora Valdez, and became a father to her three children, Trina, AJ, and Michael. Mark loved life and was willing to help anyone at anytime, he lived his life to the fullest. He touched many lives with his heart of gold and with his loveable sense of h umor. Mark will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Mark is survived by his wife Gina and their three children; his parents; his in-laws, David and Ernestina Mora; brother, Joey (Esther) Valdez, Ogden; sister Lisa (Micky Candia) Rivera, Ogden; and many aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, and in-laws that loved him very much. He also had five very special Godchildren and many friends that will miss him too! He was preceded in death by both sets of grandparents, Joe and Esther Gomez, and Tony and Mary Valdez. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 15, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 2740 Pennsylvania Ave., Ogden.
