Cort was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and spent much of his life in the Layton 22nd Ward. While there he served many callings, but will always be remembered for his work in scouting. During that time he was a firefighter at Hill Air Force Base and for Layton City. Cort had always wanted to drive "big rig" and spent many hours studying to obtain his Commercial Drivers License. He was so excited to recently begin working as a driver for Thurgood Excavation in Layton. Cort's lifelong dream was to own property and be a rancher. He spent many hours turning his dream into what he fondly referred to as the Circle G Ranch in West Layton. Vaughn Nixon Wednesday, August 17, 2005 CLINTON - Vaughn Nixon, 92, joined his eternal companion Saturday, August 13, 2005. He was born March 10, 1913 in Iona, Idaho, a son of Charles Henry and Mary Ann Newman Nixon. On October 9, 1939 he married his eternal companion, Ruth Margaret Nelson in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Their 60 years together was an example of devotion to each other and to the Lord. They have two children, Janet (David) Carrigan and Stephen (Judy) Nixon, six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Ruth passed away January 3, 1999. Vaughn served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Central States Mission where he was chosen to serve without purse or script. This began a lifetime of service in the church which included serving as a president in the 76th Quorum of the Seventy and twice as a bishop's counselor. He and Ruth together served as genealogical missionaries in the Ogden Genealogy Library. Born the youngest of eight children, Vaughn was forced to leave school after only eight years of education to help support his family. Despite not completing his schooling he lived a very successful and productive life, and was a good provider for his family. Vaughn came to Ogden during World War II to work as a guard for prisoners of war housed at the Ogden Army Depot. He later drove bus, and then began a long career in retailing that culminated with his retirement from Sears. He had many devoted and repeat customers who would come to him exclusively to buy their shoes. A tradition was started when Vaughn was working at Sears. He would give his grandchildren a quarter each time they visited him at work. Soon he was giving quarters to every child he fitted with shoes as well as to good boys and girls at church and any seniors who had a birthday. He could never leave home without a pocket full of quarters. Even in his final days he was giving quarters to those who helped him. He was always a good example to his family and the lessons he taught will long be remembered and passed on.
