She was born September 21, 1911 in Colon, Republic of Panama to Donaldo Portillo and Zillah de Souza. At age three, music became the love of her life and she was encouraged by her parents and family to play the piano and sing to her hearts content. Throughout her entire life she shared her musical ability and talents especially as organist for the Catholic parishes she resided in. She also willingly and delightfully accompanied a variety of vocalists and groups performing for numerous occasions throughout her lifetime. One of her many talents was the ability to create fantastic pieces of crochet which she generously shared with her many friends and family members. She was a fantastic cook, an immaculate housekeeper and a constant contributor to those less fortunate than herself. She met her husband, William David Beckwith during WWII, in the choir loft of Miraculous Medal Church, Cristobal, Panama, while he was stationed in the Canal Zone. They later married in the very same church in 1943. They raised three children while traveling and relocating in a variety of areas in the United States: New York, Ohio and finally settling in Clearfield, Utah in 1953. Mercedes was preceded in death by her husband David; her parents; four brothers; and her eldest son Donald. She is survived by a son Wm. Jesse Beckwith (Cheryl); Taylorsville, Utah and a daughter, Sister Iris Beckwith OSB, Mount Benedict Monastery, Ogden, Utah. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren; numerous brother and sister-in-laws and countless nieces and nephews. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, August 31, 2005 at 10 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 210 So. Chapel Street, Layton, Utah with visitation one hour prior to Mass at the church. Burial will be next to her beloved husband, David at Clearfield City Cemetery in Clearfield, Utah. Funeral directors, Lindquists Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road. The family would like to especially thank the Nursing Assistants at St. Josephs Villa for their special care and concern over these past nine years. May the Angels lead you into paradise Mom, may the choirs of angels come to welcome you and lead you into the holy city Jerusalem. Marion Louise Daniel Tuesday, August 30, 2005 Marion Louise (Armistead) Daniel, age 93, passed away peacefully Saturday, August 27, 2005 in Ogden, Utah. She was born March 14, 1912 in Montgomery, Alabama, to Victor D. Armistead and Louise C. (Davant) Armistead, moving to San Antonio as a child where she spent much of her life. Marion graduated from Brackenridge High School in 1929. In 1936, she married Lynn Farling Daniel. In 1971 she moved to Austin, Texas, where she lived until 1996. At that time she moved to Layton, Utah to be close to her daughter Jan. Her numerous great-grandchildren were fortunate to spend time with their Nana. She retired from the State of Texas Water Quality Board as an executive secretary in 1982. Marion was a devoted mother, friend and aunt. She enjoyed reading, adored her dogs, and was a wonderful cook. Marion's life was not without sacrifice, as she devoted her life to the well being of her children. Surviving are Marion's children Janice L. Jordan of Layton, Utah, and Michael F. Daniel of Seattle, Washington. She is also survived by her sister Lilian Curd of San Antonio, Texas, two nieces, Betty Hamilton of Austin, Texas, and Vicki Jo Aijian of San Antonio, Texas, and nephew Woodrow Curd of Canyon Lake, Texas. Marion is also survived by four grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, Victor D. and Joseph R. Armistead and her niece, Billie Shelton. Private family services will be held Tuesday, August 30, 2005 at Lindquists Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road. Interment, Kaysville City Cemetery. Gladys "Glad" West Tuesday, August 30, 2005 FRUIT HEIGHTS - Our beloved Aunt and Friend, Gladys Glad West, 85, passed away on Saturday, August 27, 2005. She was born October 31, 1919 in Plymouth, England to Richard and Bessie Hawke. She was raised in Plymouth. Glad married Stan Barbraji in 1941 in England. He passed away five years later. She married Burt Milsom in 1950 in England. He also preceded her in death. While visiting her sister, Irene Benson, in Farmington, UT, she met yet another sweetheart, Neil West. They were married May 16, 1973 in Bristol, England. After their honeymoon in Paris, France, they resided in Farmington, Utah. Neil and Gladys restored the Old Livery Stable to the Rock Barn home on Main Street in Farmington. They moved to Las Vegas in 1989. Neil passed away in 1993 and Gladys returned to Utah. During the war she was a conductress for the British Railways. Glad also owned and operated a general store, GladBurts in Cornwall, England for 20 years. We will miss her fun stories and fond memories of England. She was the manager of the Heidelberg Restaurant in Farmington, UT. Glad was an talented knitter. She loved to knit sweaters and cardigans. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and loved working in her rose gardens. Glad loved to travel worldwide, especially with her sister Irene. Glad was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and attended the Fruit Heights 8th Ward. Gladys is survived by a stepdaughter Diane (Bob) Grady, stepson Gary West, and many nieces and nephews who adored her. Glad was a mom to Craig and Susan West of Fruit Heights, UT, and an American Mother to George and Yvonne Streets of Surrey, England. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, two sisters and two brothers. Craig and Susan West would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Joel Porter of IHC Layton and the nurses, aids and staff at Avalon Care Center in Bountiful for their love and care for Glad. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005 at 11 a.m. at the Fruit Heights Stake Center, 170 N. Mountain Road. Interment, Farmington City Cemetery. Manual Gonzales Tuesday, August 30, 2005 OGDEN - Manuel Gonzales, 79, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Sunday, August 28, 2005. He was born July 8, 1926, in Encinada, New Mexico, a son of Santiago and Maria Trujillo Gonzales. He married Cecelia (Candy) Chavez on March 31, 1950, in Encinada, New Mexico. In 1960 they renewed their vows at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Layton. They have five children. He had lived in Ogden since 1952. Manuel served his country during WWII in the 11th Airborne, US Army. He was in Japan from 1942-1945. He had worked at HAFB for 40 years as an aircraft mechanic until retiring in 1988. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boxing, and spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Frank Lovato and Vicente Gonzales. Manuel is survived by his wife, one sister, Alejandrina (Alex) Gonzales; his children, Manuel (Susan) Gonzales, Pete Tefertiller (Jeff) Bassett, Gloria Gonzales; Connie (Joseph) Long, all of Ogden; James (Lee) Gonzales, Buckeye, Arizona. Also surviving is one special nephew, Vince (Carol) Gonzales, New Orleans, Louisiana; 12 grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren. Funeral mass will be held Wednesday, August 31, 2005, at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Vigil service with rosary will be offered Tuesday, August 30, at 6 p.m. in the Larkin & Sons Mortuary where friends may call Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. Interment in the Ogden City Cemetery with military honors accorded by the VFW. He is survived by three sons and three daughters: Ronald (Ruth) Brown, Leon (Sandy) Brown, Alan (Sandy) Anderson, Marian (Jim) Wheeler, JeNiel (Bob) Larsen and Beverly (Ron) Purser. John L. Durbin Tuesday, August 30, 2005 OGDEN - John LaRoy Durbin, 56, passed away on Friday, August 26, 2005 at his home in Ogden, Utah. He was born on November 3, 1948 on Hill Air Force Base in Clearfield, Utah, a son of John Lyle and Wanda Marie Garner Durbin. He married Carolyn Reay on February 24, 1970. They were later divorced. John married Delcie Vilate Humphrey on July 1, 1995 in Ogden, Utah. John was a member of the LDS Church. He loved to go fishing, golfing, camping, traveling and movies. Surviving are his wife, Delcie of Ogden; three sons, Carl, Daniel and Albert, nine daughters, Kelly, Heather, Lisa, Misty, Trisha, Trudy, Rachele, Kamala, Calene; 31 grandchildren; four brothers, Craig, Les, Gerald, Tazz; two sisters, Charlene and Iva. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters. It was John's desire to be cremated. Cremation under the direction of Gillies Funeral Chapel, Brigham City. Oleen Frederick Udy Tuesday, August 30, 2005 TREMONTON - Loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Oleen Frederick Udy, passed away Saturday, August 27, 2005, at the Bear River Valley Care Center. He was born December 12, 1922 in Tremonton, Utah, the son of Edmund and Mary Buxton Udy. Oleen married Della Sandall on September 22, 1942 in the Logan LDS Temple. Oleen was the Owner/operator of Reminder Office Supply in Brigham City, Utah. He had a nature you could not help loving, and a heart that was purer than old, and to those who knew him and loved him, his memory will never grow cold. His helping hand was always first, to render any aid he could, his voice was always raised in praise, his words were wise and good. Your legacy, with your humor, has helped us all to endure some rough times. We wish you a joyous reunion with your loved ones that are waiting for you on your next journey of life everlasting. He is survived by his son, Dennis T. Udy of Brigham City, three grandchildren, Scott, Tara, and Brooke; seven great-grandchildren, one daughter-in-law, Shana and one brother, Ray (Louise) Udy. Murdock, age 90, passed away Saturday, August 27, 2005 at the Crestwood Care Center. She was born Oct. 2, 1914 in Rochester, New York, to John and Kathryn Welch Mosher. She was raised in Rochester, New York graduating from Monroe High School. She married Alvin Van DeWall in 1941 who was killed during WWII at the Battle of the Bulge. She moved to the Los Angeles, California area where she was employed by Stromberg-Carlson and met Clifford Matthew Murdock. They were married Feb. 9, 1948 in Las Vegas, Nevada, and later moved to Ogden, Utah. She touched the lives of many girls as a leader in the Girl Scout organization. She was a volunteer at Ogden Regional Hospital for 13 Years, retiring in May 2004 where she worked more than 4,000 volunteer hours. She loved bowling and was a member of a bowling league in the Ogden area. Helen was a lifetime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Roy, Utah. Helen is survived by two daughters, Patricia Chadwick of Ogden, Colleen (Steve) Olsen of Alpine, Utah, one sister Alice ( George) Wyatt of Rochester, New York, eight grandchildren and one great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her husband Clifford, son Matthew, two brothers John and Lawrence and a sister, Marian. Helen's wish was to have a graveside service, which will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday September 1, 2005 at Leavitt's Aultorest Memorial Park at 836 36th Street Ogden, Utah, officiated by Father Charles Cummins. A viewing will be held Wednesday August 29, 2005 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and also one hour prior to services on Thursday September 1, 2005 at Leavitt's Mortuary. Ruth Arvilla Estep Tuesday, August 30, 2005 CLINTON - When the love of her life came calling, she gladly answered. Ruth Arvilla Black Estep left this earthly existence on August 26, 2005. She was born March 25, 1927 in Challis, Idaho to Joseph Francis and Nellie Cordelia Basinger Black. Ruth was the tenth of 13 children. She spent her early years in the small town of Salmon, Idaho. In Snowville then Plymouth, in one room schoolhouses, Ruth taught grades 1st through 8th. In Plymouth she met the young farm boy who became her only love and life-long companion Hyrum Lloyd Estep. They were married June 17, 1947 in the Idaho Falls Temple. Ruth was a kind and loving person. She gave many hours to the service of others. She was active in the LDS church serving in many capacities. Her greatest love was to teach others. She served for several years as a teacher of teachers. The extent of her influence will never be completely known. She also was a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers. She was proud of this and enjoyed her association with them for many years. Ruth loved music of all kinds and was an avid reader. She never stopped learning new things. She was well informed in political and other temporal as well as spiritual matters. She is survived by her two daughters Peggy (Scott) Sheen and Patricia (Robert) Henry, nine grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren. Also four brothers Art (Harriet) Black, Virgil (Carol) Black, Vondell (Phyllis) Black and Clarence (Naida) Black. Ruth was preceded in death by her eternal companion Lloyd, her two sons Michael Lloyd and Patrick Wayne, three sisters Edith, Carol, and Juanita and five brother Sam, Jess, Clyde, Val and Harold. Graveside services will be held Thursday, September 1, 2005 at 11 a.m. at the Plymouth Utah Cemetery, 22585 North Frontage Road, Plymouth, Utah. Gordon Gurr Tuesday, August 30, 2005 KAYSVILLE - Gordon Gurr, born May 22, 1920 in Salt Lake City, passed peacefully surrounded by his family, Friday, August 26, 2005 at his home in Kaysville. Son of James Edwin Gurr and Mary Elizabeth Robb. He married Leone Jane Hunter on July 28, 1943. He was a first lieutenant in the Army Air Corp during WWII and flew 373 successful missions during his service in the Pacific. He received many commendations, including the Distinguished Flying Cross Medal of Honor. He continued to pilot airplanes for several years after the war. He moved to Kaysville in 1951 and lived in the same residence with his family until his death. He founded Security Title Company in Farmington in 1946 and was an active member of the Kaysville City Council and Kaysville Planning Commission for many years. He was an active participant in many community companies. He was a founding member of Oakridge Country Club in Farmington. He was an avid golfer his whole life and boasts of having five holes-inone. It is a passion that he has passed on to his family. He was a great fan of model railroading, having one of the larger LGB model setups in Utah, that he named Great Utah Rail Road (GURR). He also enjoyed bridge, bowling, boating and other activities. Gordon was always a great example of honesty, integrity and values. His generosity was felt by many who knew him. He is survived by seven children, Dana Lee (Bob) Murdock, Linda (Brent) Major, Carol (John) Briggs, Gordon Gurr Jr., Dee Ann (James) Schofield, David (Susan) Gurr, Gary (Lark) Gurr. He also had 31 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Leone, and three grandchildren. A special thanks to Kathy, Sheila and Jon from Hospice Home Care. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, August 31, 2005 at 11 a.m. at the Kaysville City Cemetery, 500 E. Crestwood Road, where military honors will be accorded. Graciano "Jimmy" Reotatar Jimenez Tuesday, August 30, 2005 CLEARFIELD - Graciano Reotatar Jimenez, 93, passed away Monday, August 29, 2005 at Rocky Mtn. Care Center in Clearfield. He was born December 13, 1911 in Santa Catalina, Philippines the son of Francisco and Macaria Reotatar Jimenez. He married Lucille May Keller on June 2, 1942 in California. She preceded him in death in 1967. He married Betty May on January 28, 1978 in Ogden. Graciano served in the Army during World War II. Graciano was a member of the Catholic Church. He liked gardening, rock polishing, fishing, weekly trips to Wendover and daily breakfast at McDonalds in Clearfield. Surviving are his wife, Betty Jimenez, two sons, Gary J. Jimenez, Ogden; David W. (Britanie) Rallison, Sunset; daughter, Marlene A. (Larry) Jensen, Farr West; 10 grandchildren, 11 greatgrandchildren and seven great-greatgrandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, wife, Lucille Keller, and one sister, Antonia. Graveside services will be held Thursday, September 1, 2005 at 11 a.m. at Clearfield City Cemetery.
