OGDEN - M. Darlene Jessen Baker, 82, died Monday, February 7, 2005 at her home. She was born December 31, 1922 in Wilcox, Nebraska, a daughter of Clarence and Goldie Flossy Seybold Jessen. She was reared and educated in Nebraska graduating from Trenton High School in 1940. She moved to Ogden in 1960. In 1943 Darlene married William Michael Baker in Washington D.C. She retired from Gibson's Discount Store where she had been head checker for many years. Darlene loved to cook and travel, especially in their R.V. on the West Coast. She enjoyed tending her garden and most of all spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving are her husband of Ogden; one son and two daughters, Lynn (Kristy) Baker, Layton; Janice Kelly and Donna Wood, both of Ogden; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister, Lorraine (David) Priddy, Stratton, NE. Preceding her in death were her parents and sister Betty. Barker, Jason Brian SOUTH OGDEN - Jason Brian Barker, 28, beloved son, grandson, brother and uncle, returned home to his Heavenly Father on February 8, 2005. Jason was born on November 24, 1976 in Clarkston, Washington to Ray C. and Judy Olsen Barker. Jason grew up in Glenwood, Utah and attended schools in Richfield, Layton and Weber Basin Job Corp. He loved doing anything in the outdoors, especially camping, hunting and fishing at Flaming Gorge and drowning worms on the Weber River. He also loved riding horses and gardening. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He is survived by a daughter Emilee, his mother Judy Barker of Syracuse; his father and stepmother Ray C. and Sheila Barker of South Ogden; his brother Max (Cindy) Barker of Hurricane; sisters Robin Hoggan of South Ogden; Heidi Shields, Kimberly (Matt) Christensen all of Syracuse; Karen (Dirk) Bishop of South Weber and grandfather Max R. Barker of Denver, CO; 16 nieces and nephews, numerou s aunts, uncles and cousins, a special friend Natalie Aultman. Bassett Beloved Son, Brother and Father Dan Harston Bassett age 41, died Feb. 8, 2005 in Cedar City, UT. He was born Oct. 26, 1963 in Provo, UT a son of Earl and Ann Harston Bassett. He was a member of the LDS Church. Married Vickie Riddle, later divorced. Dan was a very loving, caring and compassionate son, brother and father. His interests were photography, movies, music, dirt biking, and the outdoors, but above all his love was with his daughter Sean. He enjoyed being a social worker and working with troubled teens. Survived by his parents of Centerville; brother Kirk and Penny, of Idaho; two sisters, Rachel and Brad Burningham, Centerville; Cheryl and Matt Ford, Bountiful; four nephews and four nieces. Bone, Jonathan Richard Jonathan Richard Bone, beloved baby boy, born Oct. 5, 2005, went home to heaven on Feb. 3, 2005. He is survived by his parents, Jeffery R. Bone and Johannah Kristine Bone; sisters, Jordan (9), Jackie (6), and Jessica (2); grandparents, Richard and Glenda Bone of Golden VAlley, AZ and Ted Allan and Mary Allan of Layton, UT; eight uncles, four aunts and many cousins. Although Jonathan has left us at such a young age, he has touched many lives and hearts and he will never be forgotten. Bryant, John Clinton Our beloved son, husband and father John Clinton Bryant, 35, died peacefully February 6, 2005 at the Ogden Regional Hospital surrounded by his family after a valiant six month struggle with lung cancer. He was born August 16, 1969, in Langley AFB, Virginia to Col. Ray H. and Bonnie E. Bryant USAF (Ret). He spent his youth in Bountiful, Utah; Cannon AFB, New Mexico; Howard AFB, Panama Canal Zone, and Litchfield Park, Arizona. His graduation from Layton High School in 1987 was highlighted with his recognition for the outstanding student athlete award where he played football, was a key member of a winning swim team and performed in a featured solo group with the Laytones. After serving as an honorable missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Raleigh North Carolina Mission from 1989 to 1991 he aggressively pursued his education. While working full time, meeting his responsibilities as a husband and father, and fulfilling his church callings , he completed his Bachelors Degree with the University of Phoenix and a Masters Degree in Business Administration with Webster University. He was employed by Futura Industries in Clearfield, Utah where he worked as a Regional Sales Representative. He married Stephanie Ann Loosli, daughter of Dimond and Linda Loosli of Syracuse, Utah on August 8, 1991 in the Salt Lake Temple. They are the blessed parents of five children. He was a kind and loving husband and father. He was a wonderful son, brother and friend. He demonstrated his love of the Gospel by his unselfish service to others. He lived an exemplary life and had a smile that could light up any room. He had a great love for the outdoors where he enjoyed hunting and golfing. He had a great love for his bike and rode in many competition races. In his last race, he completed 100 miles the weekend before he was diagnosed. Quitting was never an option! He is survived by his wife Stephanie and children: Makenna (10), Carson (8), Mallory (6), J. Mason (4), and Sydney (1). Parents: Ray and Bonnie Bryant, Layton; Siblings: Linda (Kelly) Dixon, Layton; Paul (Kimberly) Bryant, Alpine; Erin (Shane) Furniss, Riverdale; and many loving uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Christensen, Nola M. OGDEN - Nola Martin Christiansen, 86, died Tuesday, February 8, 2005 at her son's home in Hooper. She was born March 26, 1918 in Ogden, a daughter of James and Pearl Skeen Martin. Nola married Wayne Clyde Halls. They were later divorced. She married Charles Merlin Christiansen in Elko, Nevada. Charles preceded her in death. She was a lifelong resident of Ogden, graduating from Weber High School and Stevens Henagar Business College. Nola was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She retired from Hill Air Force Base following 20 years of service at Hill Air Force Base as a data engineer. Nola loved to be around and spend time with her family. She also enjoyed yard work and fishing. Surviving are one son, Rodney Kent (Linda Samuels) Halls, Hooper; her stepchildren, Wayne, Janet, Paul, Robert, and Michael, five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. Esplin, Oleen NO. OGDEN - Oleen Esplin, 92, died Tuesday, February 8, 2005 at the Crestwood Care Center. She was born April 6, 1912 in Orderville, Utah, the daughter of Alma Cox Esplin and Cleo Hannah Luke Esplin. She was preceded in death by her parents and younger siblings, Luella Barlow, Alma Lamar Esplin and Wendell Luke Esplin. Oleen resided in Orderville 13 years, Logan 42 years, North Ogden 34 years, and in Ogden at the Gardens and Crestwood Care Centers the remainder of her life. She was a faithful life long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Oleen filled many callings in Primary, Sunday School, Young Women's, and Relief Society. Of special interest was her calling as secretary to the High Priest Group in the old days. She especially loved the children and youth of the church and community. Oleen was educated in Orderville and Logan graduating from Utah State University with a B.S. degree in business. She was employed by Cache County Extension Service as a stenographer, Columbia Sheep Breeders Assoc. as executive secretary, and Weber State University as a secretary in the graduation office. Oleen was affectionately known as Auntie by family, neighbors and friends. She devoted her life loving and caring for her siblings, and three generations of nieces and nephews. Her home was open to all and provided a great haven of love, nurturing, teaching, understanding, food, shelter and fun. She is our significant other. Groseclose, Chester Acheson Chester (Chet) Acheson Groseclose died at his home in Ogden, Utah, January 21, 2005. He was 93. Chet was born in Pierre, S.D. September 20, 1911, to Florence (Acheson) and Henry Groseclose, who homesteaded near Okobojo Creek in Sully County. Chet completed the first eight grades at country schools in Sully County, and after working on his parents' ranch, attended the School of Agriculture at South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in Brookings, SD. He earned a high school diploma in 1932 from the Aggie School, where, according to his high school annual, he was known as "the Outlaw Kid." He was junior class president, a member of the debate team and an ROTC officer. He married Elva Everett of Pierre on December 1, 1934. Chet and three of his four brothers served in World War II. Chet was a radar operator on a Navy destroyer escort in the Pacific. Chet began his career with the Farm Security Administration (later known as t he Farmers Home Administration) in 1935. He served in Brookings, Salem, Britton, Winner, Ipswich and Huron. Many farmers said the credit Chet approved for them made it possible to continue farming. Late in his career, as a loaned employee to the Agency for International Development, he spent four years in Vietnam during the war, while Elva lived in Thailand. They furthered their interest in that part of the world by travel in Japan, Hong Kong and other Indochinese countries. Chet retired in 1973 after 38 years with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He and Elva moved to Scottsdale AZ. where they lived for 27 years. They moved to Ogden, UT in 2000. After 66 years of marriage, Elva died in 2001. Today Chet is happily reunited with her. Chet is survived by one son, Chet (Betsy Rice) Groseclose, of Sioux Falls, S.D., and a daughter Faye (Bruce) Berglund, of Cheyenne, WY, five grandchildren, six step grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, two step great-grandchildren and two great-great- grandchildren. Good-natured to the last, he was, in the words of his daughter-in-law, a lovely man. Special thanks to Emeritus Estates Assisted Living Center for their love and support. Madsen, Dee S. BRIGHAM CITY - Early in the morning on Tuesday, February 8, 2005, Dee S. Madsen (83) peacefully died at home in the company of his loving wife of 62 years. Dee was born September 6, 1921 in Ephraim, Utah to Christian Martin and Kirsten Vilate Jensen Madsen. Raised in Severe County, UT. He graduated from Dixie Junior College then moved to Southern California to work in aerodynamics. He met his wife Geraldine Baxter through mutual friends. They married in Santa Monica only months before he entered into military service in the Army Air Corp.; with whom he served in the European Theater during World War II. The family was later sealed for eternity in the St. George Temple. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served several years as a ward clerk and was a counselor in three bishoprics. Dee enjoyed working with his hands and was a skilled craftsman. Most important to him was his family. He was an example to them, a proud grandfather ad ored by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving are his wife, Geraldine Madsen, Brigham City, UT; daughters, JoDee (Herbert) Flindt, Salt Lake City, UT; Christine (David) Richardson, Layton, UT; Ann (Lonnie) Bissegger, Harrisville, UT; eight grandchildren, Troy, Christopher, Kyle, Shawn, Kisty, Laura, Aimee, Julie, 19 great-grandchildren, and brother, Edwin Jay Madsen, Salt Lake City, UT. Moore on January 8, 1962. They were later divorced on September 4, 1964. She was a member of the LDS Church. Alice enjoyed her grandchildren and watching TV. Stoker, Karl S. OGDEN - Karl Sherman Stoker, 72, died Monday, February 7, 2005 at his home in Ogden of a sudden heart attack. He was born July 16, 1932 in Ogden, a son of Alvin David and Dagmar Ragnhild Nielsen Lyngby Stoker. Karl married Ida Underwood on November 3, 1951 in Elko, Nevada. They were later divorced. On April 22, 1977, he married Karen Keller in Ogden. He was reared and educated in Clearfield graduating from Davis High School Class of 1950. He lettered on various sports teams. He then attended Weber State College where he played football. He moved to Ogden in 1977. Karl was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he was an Elder and participated in the sports programs. He owned and operated car washes in Davis and Weber Counties since 1964. Karl was a member of the Ogden Boat Club and served as a Commodore. He loved snow skiing at Powder Mountain, water skiing, gardening, watching a good ball game, and cooking pancakes at the family campou ts. Surviving are his wife Karen, Ogden; one son and two daughters, Kyle S. (Julayne) Stoker, Plain City; Kathy Dawn Stoker, West Point; Robin (Chad) Helsop, El Cajon, CA; five grandchildren, Shane D. Stoker, Nathan S. (Alicia) Stoker, Amelia A. (Robert) Baker, Nikael (Jake) Choules, Neriece Stoker, and four great-grandchildren. Sumida, Rose BRIGHAM CITY - Rose Kumiko Murakami Sumida, 89, loving mother, dedicated worker and world traveler, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2005 at the Country Lane Assisted Living Center. Rose was born on November 3, 1915 in Nagoya, Japan and immigrated to the United States at the age of four with her parents Sam and Yae Goto Murakami. She married Jiro Joe Sumida on March 25, 1934 in Portland, Oregon. He preceded her in death on August 18, 1988. Rose grew up in Portland, Oregon. With the outbreak of World War II, she and her husband were interned at the Hunt Relocation Camp in Idaho. At the conclusion of war they relocated to Perry, Utah where she and her husband reared their family. She worked for Maddox Ranch House and retired after 35 years. Rose loved to keep busy and had a great work ethic. She was talented and made beautiful crocheted dollies for friends and family members. She was an avid gardener. She could make anything grow and turned the simplest flowers into a colorful yard. Every year her red tulips lined the front and corner of her yard. She loved to travel and opened many windows of the world by taking her three daughters on trips to Europe including: England, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Netherlands, Spain, and Greece. A different part of the world was part of her itinerary as she took them to Asia including: China, Japan, Thailand, Singapore, Korea, and Bali. She was a member of the Honeyville Buddhist Church. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a petite woman yet determined. She never complained but learned to adapt to her surroundings. She was a great source of strength to all family members which inspired them to succeed in their endeavors. She encouraged her children and grandchildren to get an education. She is survived by her three daughters: Nancy (Michael) Sandoval, Sunnyvale, California; Jane (Richard) Gomez, Perry, Utah; Margie (Stan) Pearson, Las Vegas, Nevada; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren ; one brother, Charles (Grace) Murakami; two sisters, Yam Yagami and Tootsie (Yuki) Taniguchi; two sisters-in-law, Sumi and Yoshiko Murakami; many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, one sister, Tamako Makita; two brothers, John and George Murakami; two brothers-in law, Mitz Yagami and Mac Makita; and her parents. Thiros, Aspacia Aspacia (Specks) Thiros SYRACUSE, passed away peacefully Saturday, February 5, 2005 with Nick her loving devoted husband of 57 years at her side, also there were her children and grandchildren. Specks had so much love for her family and friends, her generosity, kindness and laughter were exceptional. She was proud of her Greek heritage, dancing, baking pastries and endless hours helping at the Greek Festivals. She crocheted many afghans and gave them to everyone she knew, leaving her legacy behind. Wheeler, Ethelyn Orvin Our loving mother and grandmother, Ethelyn Orvin Hodges Wheeler passed away Monday, February 7, 2005 at the Ogden Regional Hospital. She was born May 22, 1908 in Laketown, Utah. A daughter of Jeremiah R. Orvin and Bessie Satterthwaite. She was married to Golden Hodges on December 9, 1925, they were later divorced. She married Douglas Wheeler on October 5, 1962. He preceded her in death on May 6, 1998. She was a member of the LDS Church and served as a visiting teacher for many years. She retired from the Sego and Pet Milk Co after 26 years of service. She loved and cared for her family and served them in many unselfish ways. She loved to cook and no one ever went away hungry when Grandma was around. She enjoyed working in her beautiful flower and vegetable garden until she suffered a stroke in 1995. She wont be remembered for any great deeds in this life, but for the numerous little acts of kindness and sharing that she gave every day of her life. Our sweet little mom and her quick wit will be missed by all. Surviving are her four children Virginia (Bob) Harris of Nibley; Richard (Bonnie) Hodges of Sandy; Jere Dale (Donna Fae) Hodges of Syracuse; Joann (Dell) Taylor of So. Ogden; step-children Myrna Tarbett, Newton; Linda (George) Riddle, Roy; and Randell (Gwen) Wheeler, Lewiston; 11 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, five sisters and four brothers.Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 12, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Lindquist's Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road. Friends and family may call Saturday from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Syracuse City Cemetery. The family wishes to thank the staff at Mt.
