He was born January 7, 1938 in Treasureton, Idaho to Theron Eugene and Fay Edna McWhorter Beckstead. He was a member of the LDS Church. Gordon had been employed at DDO for 20 years, receiving numerous awards for his dedicated service. He was a very friendly and loving person. He loved animals and especially loved his family. Surviving are one sister, Betty Parks, Ogden; one nephew, Brad (Michelle) Parks, West Point, UT; two nieces, Julie (Gary) Petersen, Almira, WA; Susan Drake, Ogden; and numerous great nieces and nephews. Canter, Lilian Madge BRIGHAM CITY - Lilian Margaret (Madge) Canter, our beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend passed away Sunday, February 13, 2005. She was born June 10, 1920, in Louth, Lincolnshire, England to John and Lillian Gertrude Drewery. Madge married Harry Frost September 14, 1940 in England. They had four children, Valerie Stainton, Walter Frost, Patricia (Dave) Bott, and Stuart Frost. After immigrating to the United States, she married Leslie Canter, June 10, 1969. They lived in Indianapolis, Indiana until his death. She then lived with her daughter in Brigham City. Madge leaves behind her children, three sisters, Barbara Skinner, Gwen Lang, Joyce Barnes and one brother, John Drewery. She also leaves behind her stepchildren, Robert, Gary, Donna and Brian, 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. The family thanks the staff at Legacy Health Care. Davis Jr., Herman Preston LAYTON - Herman Preston Davis, Jr. passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family on Saturday, February 12, 2005 of renal failure, after a life filled with service to his family, church, and friends. He was born July 20, 1944 in West Hollywood, CA to Herman P. Davis, Sr. and Ella Blanche Laster. He was in the United States Air Force, serving in the Vietnam War. (1966-1967) He married his childhood sweetheart, Sheila Lowe on April 30, 1966. They moved to Utah in 1970. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Ogden LDS temple. He retired after 30 years at Hill AFB. He had a passion for life with a vast knowledge of guns, movies, and aircraft. Herm was a friend to all, and will be remembered for his compassion, service and humor. He was a convert to the LDS church, and held many positions in the church, including high priest, bishopric, ward missionary, and loved serving the primary. He is survived by his wife Sheila of 38 years, sons: Mark (Jenny) of Layton, Preston (Shelby) of Clearfield, and Mitchell (Rebecca) of Salt Lake City, and three grandchildren: Carson, Nathan, and Alyssa. His brother Lloyd (Downey, CA) brother-in-law Charles Bauer (N. Hollywood, CA). He loved his many nieces and nephews. Herman was preceded in death by his father, mother, and sister. Deragon, Anthony Lawrence Anthony Lawrence Chief Deragon SYRACUSE - Anthony Lawrence Deragon, 46, passed away Monday, February 14, 2005 at McKay-Dee Hospital from a rare pulmonary embolism. He was born June 6, 1958 in Ashland, Wisconsin to Anthony and Esther Rose Deragon. He was raised by Walter and Ester Rose Miller. Anthony served in the U.S. Navy from 1977 to 1983. He married Deborah Crowther on January 13, 1994 in Amarillo, Texas. He was baptized a member of the LDS Church on December 6, 2002. He served with the scouts and deacons. He was a loving husband and father and enjoyed spending time with his family. Surviving are his wife Deborah, children, MacKenzie, Dakota, Skylar & Sierra. And older children Christopher, Michael, Matthew Deragon from 1st marriage, and 4 grandchildren. Dube, Hazel Violet Hazel Violet Dube SYRACUSE - Hazel Violet Dube, 86, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Saturday, February 12, 2005 at the McKay Dee Hospital. Hazel was born November 19,1918 in Holyoke, Massachusetts to Leon and Elsie Cousin Keeler. She lived her whole life in Massachusetts and moved last year with her daughter and son-in-law to Syracuse, Utah. She loved to sew, garden, and feed her birds and squirrels. She collected stuffed bears. Our time together here was much too short but we thank God for every day we had. Mum, we all love you and will miss you everyday. You have left behind wonderful memories for us to cherish. Hazel is survived by her son Robert (Carolyn) Paul and her daughter Hazel (Patrick) Walker, 6 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was born December 9th, 1918 in a sod house on a farm near Mason City, Nebraska to Charles and Mary Newman. She married Merle D. West in Mindon, Nebraska in 1937. They moved to Rawlins Wyoming where he was an engineer for the Union Pacific Railroad. They divorced in l952. Rachel married John E. McCall in 1954 and divorced in 1960. Rachel worked at the City Steam laundry to support her two children. Later she worked as a housekeeper and cook for the Priests at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Rachel married a fellow parishioner, Eliseo Lee Gallegos, in 1973. Lee died in 1995. Ill health finally forced her into a health care facility in Rawlins in 2003. She was moved to a care unit in Ogden, Utah in July 2004. Rachel was active in St. Mary's Circle, VFW Ladies Auxiliary and Loyal Order of the Moose. Rachel had many close friends, including those from the laundry where she worked, St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the Carbon County Senior Citizens Center, rest home employees, and family and relatives. She is survived by her son, Roy (Linda) West of South Ogden, Utah; and her daughter Ida C. (Bill) Michie of Milton, Florida. She is also survived by seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, three husbands, sister Roberta Wilson, brothers Tom, Carl, Milfred, Kenneth, and Don Newman, and two daughters Ida Mae and Ida Betty Lou West. Her friends and family will remember her for her friendliness, her good cooking, playing pinochle and bingo, singing, whistling or yodeling to old cowboy music--loving to go on rides to just about anywhere, and enjoying many a good western movie. Rachel also enjoyed embroidering when she had some quiet time. She was good-natured and spoke kindly of others. She will be missed and is loved by all who knew her. Glenn, Carlos WELLSVILLE, UTAH - Fred Carlos Glenn, 66, passed away suddenly of a heart attack on Friday, February 11, 2005. He was born Nov. 20, 1938 in Wellsville, Utah to Fred Parker and Mary Hall Glenn. He married Sharon Crockett and later divorced. He then married Sharon Benson and then later divorced. He had no children from either marriage. He graduated from the twelfth grade and served four years in the Air Force as a fire fighter. He was a diesel mechanic, heavy equipment operator and master mechanic. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Carlos was a past member of the American Legion and Fraternal Order of Eagles. Carlos loved to fish and was successful most of the time. However, he would not reveal his favorite spot. When asked if he caught any fish he would reply, "That's why I go." Carlos had many friends and called them by nicknames. Survived by one brother, Phillip (Trudy) Glenn of Young Ward, two sisters Norma (Thomas) Otteson of Roy, Carolyn (Michael) Hirst of Hooper, and one brother-in-law Ray (Marilyn) Hulse of Logan and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews, and friends. Preceded in death by both parents and a sister, Marilyn Hulse. Hadley, Carl SOUTH OGDEN - Carl Donald Hadley, 82, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away February 12, 2005 at his home in South Ogden. He was born February 2, 1923 in Marriott, Utah to Alonzo and Iretta Butler Hadley. He grew up in Kanesville, Utah and graduated from Weber High School. He fell in love with and married his honey, Ruth Johnston, on August 17, 1942 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They shared 62 years of dancing, loving, serving and raising their wonderful family. Shortly after their marriage, Carl served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II for three years, including time in Okinawa. After the war, he was employed at Hill Air Force Base, working in procurement. His leadership abilities and his warm personality endeared him to the people who worked with him. He retired as a procurement analyst after 28 years. Carl enjoyed many quiet hours fishing and hunting. He was also an avid reader and sports fan. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many positions and he and his wife had the opportunity to share their talents with people of all ages as dance directors in many wards, stakes, and regions and on the Mutual Improvement Association General Board. He also served in the High Priest Group as a leader and a gifted teacher. Blessed with a beautiful voice, Carl sang with various quartets and choirs from the time he was 17 years old until his health prevented him from continuing. He had many unique opportunities while in the military to use his musical talents, and was proud to have led the singing in every Ward in which he lived. He especially enjoyed singing with choirs and special groups such as the Sounds of Music. Carl's dedication to his wife, and his love for his family and the gospel guided him throughout his life. He was a strong, gentle peacemaker whose quick wit and Cheshire Cat grin will be missed by all of us. Carl is survived by his wife, Ruth; one so n, Michael J. (Stephanie) Hadley, Glendale, AZ; and four daughters, RaNae (Dan) Harrop, North Ogden; Nadine Hanson, South Ogden; Christine (Michael) Norseth, Harrisville; Jill (Gaynard) Linsley, North Ogden; 15 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers, Dean Hadley, Roland (Murna) Hadley, Gordon (Maxine) Hadley; and three sisters, Dorothy Cole, June Heiser, and Joan (Ronald) Schultz. Huston, Martha Lee Martha Lee Huston Sept. 20, 1919 - Feb. 11, 2005 Martha loved to crochet, garden, spend time with family and friends. When the sun was out you could usually see her wheeling around town in her Jazzy chair. She was a cook, managed a motel in Reno for years and loved to play bingo. Martha is survived by one sister, Kathy Fredson, Reno; her son, Bill (Kari) Huston, Ogden; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Special thanks to Crestwood Care Center and the compassionate staff who knew what Mom was all about and made her last months a lot easier. The family will hold a private ceremony. Kap, John ROY - John Kap, 82, a self-proclaimed ornery old Dutchman returned to his heavenly home Monday, February 14, 2005. Born at the family home in Ogden, Utah on August 1, 1922, John is the second son of Jacob H. and Anna Kruitmoes Kap. John grew up working hard, helping his father on the Shaw farm for a dollar a day. For fun he raised chickens. With a life long interest in sports, John has coached scores of young men in recreation and church sports. He has served numerous times as a ward and stake athletic director. John always had his eye out for a good ball glove and enjoyed relacing mitts. He was presented the Roy Citizen of the Year Award for his volunteer contributions to Roy Recreation. He worked physically hard his entire life, both on the job and around his home. He took pride in being punctual, having polished shoes and a nice yard. Many people admire his amaranthus, windmill and other yard decor. John married June Christensen, June 18, 1947, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He is the Kaptain of The KAPstone Team which includes children: Brent (Kathleen) Kap, Klamath Falls, OR; and Jill (Gary) Poppitz, Syracuse. NORTH OGDEN - John Errol Oostyen, born January 8, 1940 to John Andrew Oostyen and Jennie Sophia Unck; a son, husband, father, brother, uncle, colleague and friend extraordinaire, peacefully accepted a new assignment February 14, 2005 due to melanoma. He fought a good fight never wavering from his moral values of integrity, courtesy and civility. He was 65 years young. John was reared in Ogden, Utah. He graduated from OHS, WSU, USU with a BS in Aeronautical Technology, and the U of Phoenix with an MBA. He worked in San Diego for General Dynamics. In 1977 he returned to Ogden employed by Thiokol where he retired after 24 years. In his retirement, John, an avid golfer, worked for The Barn golf course where he spent some of his happiest days. He was a marathon runner. He ran for the feeling of strength of body, peace of mind and camaraderie. He ran his first marathon at age 59 and went on to run three more, including the San Diego Rock and Roll, June 6, 2004, just two weeks before he was diagnosed. He also participated in the Spud Man triathlon. He loved his friends at Gold's Gym. John was outstandingly kind and considerate to his mother-in-law. They spent many hours walking at the mall and "doing lunch." They are great friends. John married his sweetheart, Sally Porter, February 14, 1963. Together they shared 42 years. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Ogden Temple for time and all eternity. They have been blessed with three outstanding children, Chris (Mika), Nagoya, Japan; Jeffery (Jennifer), San Diego, CA; and Juliana Oostyen, Ogden, Utah. He has five grandchildren who adore and admire him; Sayaka (7), Mio (5), Jay (3), Judd (7), and Durham (1). He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, brother, Max S. Oostyen, and mother-in-law, Mrs. Leah Porter. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and father-in-law. "Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some stay awhile, and leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never, ever the same." This is true of John. The family expresses deep appreciation and love for the care and compassion given by Dr. Vincent Hansen, his staff, and the constant support and care of IHC Hospice, especially to Julie. Saunders, Fern Leone Fern Leone Saunders Leone, 87, left this earthly life to join her Father in Heaven on February 14, 2005, of natural causes at Apple Village Assisted Living in Layton, Utah. She was surrounded by her loving and devoted family. Leone was born March 21, 1917, in Kimberly,Idaho, third child of Warren and Mabel Staley. She was raised and educated in Kimberly, Idaho. She began her career as a telephone operator while in high school and retired from Mountain Bell in Ogden, Utah. While visiting her brothers in Bishop, California she met her first husband, Johnnie James Hilton. They were married October 27, 1940 in Bishop and were blessed with two miracles, James and Sylvia who were the light and love of her life. They were later divorced. She married James Edward Saunders July 29,1992, in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. He preceded her in death in August, 2000. She continued a loving relationship with the Saunders family. Leone had many hobbies and lived life to the fullest. She was most happ y when surrounded by family and friends. She had the opportunity to develop life long friendships while attending the Ogden 4th Ward for nearly three decades. The two years spent at Apple Village proved to create everlasting friendships as well. Leone was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Gospel and the Savior were the center of her life. Leone dedicated her time teaching and serving others, doing genealogy, and attending the temple. She had an unfaultering testimony and loved to share the gospel with all those she came in contact with. Leone served a mission to Nashville, Tennessee and held many positions in the church. She was currently the Family Home Evening Coordinator in her branch at Apple Village where she compassionately served and loved all her friends. Leone displayed an extraordinarily Christ-like example to everyone around her, especially to her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her children James (Marsha) Hilton, Rincon GA and Sylvia (Dave) Rosser, Kaysville, UT. Brothers Jack, Carl, and Lloyd Staley. Sisters Betty Freeman and Lois Crist. Ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Warren, Bill and Kenny Staley. We are eternally greatful for her testimony and pure dedication to life. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends, but we are comforted in knowing we will all be together again. Stewart, Edna Edna Wright Stewart, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 13, 2005, to be reunited with her beloved husband on this, his birthday. She was surrounded by loving family members. Edna was born July, 8, 1912, in a log cabin her father built on the Duchesne River. She is the seventh of eleven children born to Owen U. and Matilda Casper Wright. In her early years she attended school in a two-room log cabin and rode to school on a horse. Edna married Morris B. Stewart on March 30, 1930. Their marriage was solemnized October 15, 1969 in the Salt Lake Temple. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She taught Primary for over 25 years, and also served as Sunday School Secretary and in the Relief Society. Edna and Morris had two daughters and eight sons. Edna was known for her great cooking. Everyone loved her applesauce cakes, popcorn cakes, sweet cinnam on rolls and fantastic hot bread. Her children and the neighbor children could smell it a mile away. They would quit playing just to come enjoy a slice of her bread. It never mattered to her whether you were a friend, neighbor, or grandchild, she had things to share. She would give you a piece of dough then you could make your own little loaf. Edna also loved her garden. She was an avid gardener and was always giving starter plants away. Edna is survived by her loving daughters, Elsie Thomas of Spanish Fork and Ludene (Ed) Fields of Goshen. Six sons: Larry (Marge) of Pocatello, ID; John of Ogden, UT; Ralph (Bobbie) of Liberty, UT; Joel (Rhonda) of South Ogden, UT; Dale of California; Don (Sharon) of Taylor, UT; 37 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Wells Wright of Brigham City, UT; Earl Wright of Duchesne, UT; and one sister, Elma Clark of Bountiful. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons, Jim and Charles Stewart, seven brothers and sisters, three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Edna loved her children. She was thankful for her daughters loving and unselfish care in her later years. Grandma will be missed terribly by her family, but we find sweet peace and happiness in the knowledge that she is now reunited with her much loved parents, husband, sons, and family members. Funeral services for Edna will be Thursday, February 17, 2005, at the Walker Family Mortuary at 187 South Main Street in Spanish Fork, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be held prior to the services at the mortuary from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Interment will be at the Spanish Fork Cemetery located at 420 South 400 East immediately following services. The family expresses a special thanks to Mountain View Hospital's Emergency room staff; Lisa, Gary, and the ICU staff; and Dr. Tipton for being so kind and helpful. We appreciate their professional and tender care of Edna. We also would like to acknowledge the ex cellent care she received from Debbie and the wonderful staff at Hales Spanish Fork Nursing and Rehab Center. Clark Lindquist Tanner, 66, died peacefully of pneumonia on February 12, 2005 at Avalon Valley Rehabilitation Center. Clark was born on October 26, 1938 a son of Norman Clark and Barbara Lindquist Tanner. As a young man he had strong passions for hiking, climbing, skiing, music, and philosophy. He was an avid reader and lover of books. He graduated from Olympus High School and the University of Utah with a degree in philosophy. He joined the Coast Guard Reserve and was trained in the San Francisco area. Unfortunately, in early adulthood he was afflicted with schizophrenia from which he suffered the rest of his life. As a young man, Clark loved climbing in the Wasatch, Uinta, Teton, and Wind River Mountains. He successfully climbed peaks in the Alps, including Mt. Rosa and the Matterhorn. Clark's relationship in his early adulthood with Linda Daniels English was surely one of the greatest gifts in his life. Clark will be remembered by his family and friends for his bright mind and memory, his sense of humor, and his committed spirit which helped him stay alert and interested in events of the world in spite of his mental illness. Clark is survived by his parents, Norman and Barbara Tanner of Salt Lake City, his sisters, Susan T. Chapman of Denver, Deon T. Hilger of Santa Fe, and Deb Sawyer of Salt Lake City, and his nephews and nieces. The family wants to thank all the people who helped make Clark's life as rich and full as possible given his mental illness. In particular we want to thank the staff at Valley Mental Health, especially Jona Nusink-Curry, Drs. Ted Wander and Marge McCoy, the staff at Hillside Rehabilitation Center, Bonnie Thornock, the staff of Harmony Home Health, the staff at Avalon Valley Rehabilitation Center, Lois Brandreit, and the staff of the restaurants Clark enjoyed including Kyoto, L'Avenue, Marie Callender's, and the Paris. We also want to thank the people at the Salt Lake City Library and Sam Weller's Book Store for the ir patience and kindness in helping Clark with all the books, articles and essays he always ordered. BRIGHAM CITY- Steven Keith Watters, 47, returned home to his Heavenly Father on Tuesday, February 15, 2005. Steve was born September 20, 1957 in Provo, Utah a son of Keith and LaDonna Lund Watters. He grew up in Brigham City and graduated from Box Elder High School in 1975. Steve married Diane Boren his sweetheart on April 22, 1977 in Brigham City, they were later sealed on April 10, 1981 in the Ogden LDS Temple. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was currently the Scout Committee Chairman and a member of the High Priest Quorum in his ward. Steve coached many youth teams in Soccer over the years and loved everyone he coached. He had a great sense of humor and always put others first. Steve's greatest love was for his family and he never missed an opportunity to support them. Steve will be greatly missed and forever loved by his wife, his family and friends.
