Jean was born in Provo, Utah on October 19, 1954 to Joe and Donna Jean Beck. She married Ray Balls on November 26, 1999 where they enjoyed their life together in Brigham City, Utah. She earned a Bachelors of Arts/English from the University of Utah, and Master of Arts and PhD in Philosophy from the University of Oregon. Jean had a gift for language and writing and for the past ten years was a freelance research, editing, and writing consultant. She was an avid reader and photographer. With a great spirit of adventure, Jean enjoyed snow skiing with her husband and friends, taking trips on the Harley with the CABOBS, Red Butte Garden concerts, summer volleyball parties, and visiting her grandchildren in Florida. She is survived by her husband Ray Balls, sister, Vicki Rankin (Gary ), brother, David Beck, and niece, Kristy Beck, stepchildren, Shauna Rittenhouse (Mike) and Courtney Balls (Elizabeth) who reside in Port St. John Florida. Her two grandchildren, Kyler and Mikelle Rittenhouse were her greatest joy (I got to skip the hard part). Jean's parents and nephew Dave Jeff Beck, preceded her in death. She was born April 25, 1938 in Lewiston, Utah, the daughter of Leo A. and Nonavie Stone Nelson. She attended schools in Ogden graduating from Ogden High School in 1956. She attended Weber State College where she received her degree as a Certified Dental Assistant. She also attended Stevens Henagar School of Business receiving her degree in Bookkeeping and Business Machines. Phyllis married Louis O. Mixon in January of 1956. Their union brought a son, Charles. Louis preceded her in death. She married Neil Brewer and their union brought a daughter, Cheryl. They were later divorced. Phyllis married Dean R. Hadley in February of 1974 and he adopted her two children. She had been a member of the Dental Assistants Association where she held the office of Educational Chairman for two years. She was a past member of the Mt. Ogden Business Women's Association, and a member of the Ogden Elks Lodge Drove #27. Surviving are her husband, Dean, of Ogden; two children, Chuck (Maggie) Hadley, Cheryl (Sam) Archuleta, five stepchildren, Geraldean (Ronald) Robins, Dan (Susan) Hadley, Dale (Sherrie) Hadley, Kelly (Gwen) Hadley, Pam (Chuck) Rockwell, 22 grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren she dearly loved. She is also survived by three brothers, Ralph (Merrietta) Nelson, Don Nelson, and Gary Nelson and special friends, Jay and Peggie Barker. She was preceded in death by her parents, her granddaughter Jodie, and her stepson Kirt. Harris, Cheryl Lynn CLEARFIELD - Wednesday, January 19, 2005 at 2:44 p.m. Cheryl Lynn Harris returned home to her Heavenly Father as she was surrounded by her family and loved ones. Cheryl was born in Preston, Idaho June 26, 1947 to Merlin and Jean Harris (Ransom). She was the oldest of three children; sister Peggy Mikkelsen (Terry) of Clinton, Utah; brother Mike Harris (Nancy) of Colorado. As a child she was known for her mischievous behavior and for her love of animals especially stray dogs which she would try to hide in the shed. Cheryl left behind two daughters: Shauna Streeter (Joe) and Becky Dean (Tom) eight grandsons, one granddaughter and one newborn great-granddaughter. Mom attended Clearfield High School and was a member of the LDS Church. She loved to crochet and embroider quilts. Many people cherish her precious pieces of handiwork. Cheryl loved camping, fishing and spending time with her grandchildren. She will miss gossiping with her best friend Viola. She was preceded in death by grandparents Arnold and Ada Ransom and her father Merlin Harris. We would like to express special thanks to Kevon, Rebecca and Keri at Davis Hospital for the Special love and care they gave our mother during her last days. Hellstrom, Fred 1919 - 2005 BICKNELL, Utah - Carl Fredrick "Fred" Hellstrom, age 85, of Bicknell, died January 17, 2005 in Gunnison, Utah. He was born April 4, 1919 in Randolph, Utah, a son of Leonard Leroy and Luella Vilate Longhurst Hellstrom. He graduated from South Rich High School, Class of 1937, where he excelled in Basketball. He got his Bachelor's Degree from Utah State and his Master's Degree from Colorado A&M. Fred married Dal Marr Hurst, April 24, 1942 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. In the fall of 1942 he went into the army and served during World War II from October of 1942 to December of 1945. He served in Hawaii and IwaJima. Fred taught school in Cokeville, Wyoming for two years and them moved to Bicknell, Utah where he taught Vocational Agriculture at Wayne High School for 32 years, retiring in 1984. Fred and Dal Marr worked at the Manti Temple as Ordinance Workers. They served a mission for the LDS Church in the Missouri St. Louis Mission in 1987. Fred was always active i n the church. He served as a counselor in the Thurber Ward Bishopric and a counselor in the Wayne Stake Presidency. He served on the Bicknell Town Board and was a member of the State Vocational Agriculture Association. He enjoyed gardening, and having worked on his uncle's farm as a boy, he always enjoyed the farms, cattle, sheep and fields of Wayne County. Fred is survived by his wife of Bicknell; children: Cordell and Donna Hellstrom of Henderson, Nevada; Sonja and Kyle Burdash of Layton, Utah; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers: Delmar and Leora Hellstrom of Ogden, Evan and Jennie Hellstrom of Clearfield. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Reed Hellstrom, Myron Hellstrom and Hubert Hellstrom. Hunter, Vero Othel BRIGHAM CITY - Vero Othel Hunter, husband, father, grandpa, great-grandpa and friend passed away peacefully at home January 20, 2005 surrounded by his family. Dad is now free from all his pain. He was born October 16, 1937 in Clifton, Idaho, to Pearl Henderson and Cyral Stevenson Hunter. Vero married Sheryl Nelson in 1957, and had three children, Rod Hunter, Kim Glenn and Annette Jones. They were later divorced. He then met and married the love of his life Sandra Seber on April 4, 1970 in Elko, Nevada. This marriage added three more children, Tammy Cunningham, J.R. Hunter and Ted Hunter. During his life he worked for Ocean-a-graphic Mapping, Dover Heating, Jack B. Parson Co. and then retired from Thiokol Corp. Dad made many and varied friends through work and the B& B. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and of course golfing. Vero was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Leoise Hunter, brothers, Dee Hunter, Mack Hunter, and nephew, Pat Dustin. He is survived b y his wife, Sandra Hunter, Brigham; and children; Rod Hunter, Logan; Kim Glenn, Brigham; Annette (Rick) Jones, Brigham; Tammy (Autie) Cunningham, Ogden; J.R. Kirby, Thomas July 19, 1924 - January 19, 2005 Thomas Kirby, age 80, of Foley, died Wednesday, January 19, 2005 at the St. Cloud Hospital. Parish prayers will be 6:30 p.m., Friday at the Foley Funeral Home. Thomas Kirby was born July 19, 1924 in Emmetsburg, Iowa to Phillip and Corneil (Berry) Kirby. He married Evelyn Sopkoviak November 17, 1962 at Sts. Peter & Paul's Catholic Church, Gilman. He received his elementary education in Emmetsburg and Spencer Iowa and higher education at Buena Vista University, Iowa State University and Oxford University, Oxford, England. After graduation, Tom joined the Army Air Corps serving in the 2nd Army. Tom's major tour of duty was in N orth East England at Seething Air Base with the 8th Army. His area of expertise was Cryptographics. Tom was honorably discharged and attended Buena Vista University and received a BS in Chemistry at Iowa State University. After his marriage he worked for the Federal Government in Minneapolis; Rock Island, IL; Detriot, MI; New Cumberland, PA; Battle Creek, MI and most recently, Ogden, UT. He was the recipient of many rewards, most notably the Distinguished Career Award. After a long and distinguished career he retired in 1989. Tom was an avid golfer and had two holes-in-one while living in Utah. When he could, he played golf every day. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church. Norman, age 75, passed away on Jan. 16, 2005. He was a native of Utah. Silva, Leslie Duane Leslie Duane Silva, 45, died January 16, 2005 in Ogden. He was born January 5, 1960 to Leslie Leonard Silva and Sharon Wakeley. Les loved the outdoors and country music. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He was a great friend to many. He could strike up a conversation with just about anyone. Les was fortunate enough to have a second Mom and Dad whom he lived with for several years, John and Carolyn Lewis, and also a foster sisters, Lacee Madsen. He loved them all dearly. He is survived by his two daughters, Samantha Silva and Christina Silva of Texas; mother, Sharon Wakeley, Louisiana; two sisters, Annette (Charles) Wells of New York and Sherllyn Silva, California; brother, Charles Loucks of Virginia; second Mom and Dad, John and Carolyn Lewis of Ogden, and Lacee. Smith, Malcolm S. "Smitty" HUNTSVILLE - Malcolm Stanley Smith, age 65 passed away after a courageous and valiant battle with cancer, On January 18, 2005. We all admire his strength and willpower throughout his life. If you could survive on willpower alone, he would have outlived us all. He was born in Portland, Maine on October 19, 1939 to John Stanley Smith and Arline Francis Jack Smith. He graduated in 1958 from Kent Hill Preparatory School. He joined the Coast Guard in 1958 and proudly served our country until 1964. He married Karen Lee Harbertson on September 17, 1966, they were later divorced. He had many occupations including working as a stage hand for many Hollywood TV shows such as Joey Bishop, Smothers Brothers, Mamas & Papas, Carol Burnett Show and other theatrical productions. He then moved to Huntsville, Utah where he managed the Red Rock Cafe in Southern Fork Canyon. He worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad, and Internal Revenue Service. He medically retired in 1989. H e was proud member of the Ogden FOE #2472, and a dedicated member of American Legion Post #129 where he served as a member of the honor guard. He had an immense love for his children and grandchildren. We will always have a great memory of him driving his truck with the dog's riding in the back. The saying "A Dog is a Man's Best Friend" was a true motto he lived by. He had a great love for horses and was a member of the Quarter Horse Association. He enjoyed breeding his brood mares to his stallion and always looked forward to the spring to see the new foals. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed the summers at the FOE trailer park. He fulfilled his dream of buying a RV and traveling the United States. He was able to reconnect with his sister and nephews on the East Coast and revisit his birthplace. He is survived by two sons, Tyler (Mavanee) Smith and Lee (Colleen) Smith all from Roy, and six grandchildren, Kolton, Michael, Skyler, Tasia, Carlee & Caity. Also surviving is his best friend and onl y sibling Maggie Lohkamp (our Pillar of strength through this difficult time.) He also has five wonderful nephews; Mark, Joe, Rick (Jen), Dave (Robin), Bert (Kim) one grandnephew and five grandnieces. He was preceded in death by both his parents and one brother-in-law Robert Lohkamp. We would like to express thanks to the staff of Dr. Gray, Dr. Senekjian, Dr. Wood, Dr. Ingersal, Mckay Dee Hospital, U of U, National Kidney Foundation, the families of the two kidney donors who gave us an extra 15 years to spend with our dad and for him to know his grandchildren. Lastly we would like to thank Cathy Esplin and the hospice team for making our dad comfortable and adding support to his family in his last days. OGDEN - Paula Leenaards VanderStappen, 73, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, at the McKay-Dee Hospital. She was born March 22, 1931, in Tilburg, Netherlands, a daughter of Peter and Elizabeth Blaauhuit Leenaards.. She married Sef J. VanderStappen on April 14, 1955, in Tilburg, Netherlands. He died Oct. 19, 2001. She had lived in Ogden for 50 years and was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church where she was active in the weekly Bingo games at the church. Surviving are two sons and one daughter, John (Jeanne) VanderStappen, Murrieta, California; Raymond VanderStappen, Ogden, Betty (Edward) Dorsey, Pueblo, Colorado; one grandchild, Jessica Dorsey; one brother and two sisters, Peter (Tini) Leenaards, Jose (Rien) Paapen, and Ans (Frans) Phillippson, all of Tilburg, Netherlands. Also surviving are her dear family and friends, Peter (Anna) DeBeer, Gos (Els) VanderStappen, Gerry (Pierre) DeRooy, and Anthony VanderStappen. Woolsey, Inez Etta Hart Inez Etta (Inetta) Hart Woolsey OGDEN, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, passed away at the age of 84 on Wednesday, January 19, 2005. She was born June 17, 1920 in Thayne, Wyoming - the eleventh child and only daughter of Isaac and Inez Wright Hart. Her family moved to West Weber, Utah shortly after she was born and later moved to Ogden when she was three years old. She attended the Ogden City Schools graduating from Ogden High School in 1939. While attending Washington Jr. High, she met her husband, Walter Hill Woolsey. They remained sweethearts throughout their high school days and were married in the Salt Lake Temple on May 14, 1942. While in high school, she participated in Ogden High School's Girls' Pep Club and the Girls' Social Club. After her husband enlisted in the U.S. Navy, she moved to Seattle, Washington to be closer to him. While there, she worked at the Alaskan Copper Works. They then moved to Depoe Bay, Oregon. After her husband was shipped overseas due to WWII, she returned to Ogden to wait for his return. Upon her husband's return, they settled in Ogden, Utah. She was an active member of the LDS Church having served in various positions in the Sunday School, Primary, YWMIA, and Relief Society of various Wards throughout her life. She worked for fifteen years at Z.C.M.I. as a salesclerk. She especially enjoyed working in the bridal gown department, where she helped young ladies prepare for their wedding. She and her husband moved to the Harrison Regent Retirement Center a few months ago, where she was loved by many. She was an example of Christ-like love and kindness to everyone. She was always anxious to be making and giving gifts to many of her friends and neighbors. Her love and sweet spirit will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Surviving are her husband, Walter Hill Woolsey, three daughters: Carol Fern (Bob) Buroker of Portland, Oregon; Calleen (Art) Jones of Paradise, Utah; Patric ia (Scott) Handy of Ogden; two sons: Michael (Cindy) Woolsey of Ogden; Kelly (Jill) Woolsey of Stanwood, Washington; 18 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Her parents, ten brothers, and one granddaughter preceded her in death.
