Martin, Rose Rosa Martin died in the evening on July 21, 2005 at Baton Rouge General Hospital. Rosa is a native of Union, Louisiana and from an early age her parents, James and Sophia LeBlanc gave her a love of education and learning. Rosa was very proud that she passed this same love to her children. Gretchen, Yvette, Shellie and Thomas III all graduated from St. Joseph's High School in Ogden, Utah. They went on to earn degrees in electronics, psychology, mathematics, political science, respiratory therapy, public health and medicine. Rosa earned a BA degree in mathematics and chemistry from Leland College in 1957. She began her professional career as a teacher and eventually became a counselor for students and teachers alike. Her accomplishments include her marriage to Thomas Martin, her 5 children and maintaining a military household. She filled her house with love. Rosa and Tom lived at Hill Air Force Base (HAFB) before moving to Sunset, Utah. She was a member of Prince of Peace Ca tholic Church at HAFB where she was active in the choir, was a cantor and lector. She worked at the Job Corp Center in Clearfield Utah until her retirement. In 2001, after 30 years in Utah, Rosa and Tom returned to Convent, Louisiana to be closer to their brothers and sisters. There, they joined St. Michael's Catholic Church. Rosa Martin was devoted to her children and 8 grandchildren. She has traveled across the country for her family. She could be counted on to arrive at any location with an ice chest full of delights. She traveled to Massachusetts for a college graduation, Atlanta for a college graduation, Utah to see a new house, New York for a football game, Atlanta to nurse a sick granddaughter and Washington D.C. to make her grandsons' favorite dish, gumbo. Rosa dropped off a refrigerator, made curtains, decorated nurseries, and paid for piano lessons. She encouraged, supported and believed in our dreams. Her signature dishes were her gumbo, sweet potato pie and cakes. Just ask her grandchildren who once commented "but only grandma makes it from the heart." Her other love was gardening. From wonderful foods to gorgeous roses, Rosa had a green thumb. In Utah, polite strangers would ask if they could have a rose from one of her rose bushes; the less polite didn't ask but helped themselves. She didn't mind, because she felt the beauty of flowers was to be shared here and now. People knew she would listen and sought her out for advice and compassion. Rosa was generous with her time, generous with her home, generous with her love. Since returning to Louisiana her numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews have found a safe place to retreat for a comforting word and a hot meal. Rosa listened. There is a peace in knowing you are always welcome and are cherished. On the morning of July 21st, she told us "remember the love; the love is the most important thing." Even in her death we are leaning on her strength and wisdom. Rosa is survived by her husband, Thomas L. Martin. Her daughters Gretchen Trimble and husband Steven; Yvette Smith and husband Dwayne; Shellie Jones and husband, Allen. Her son Thomas L. Martin III. Her two sisters Hazel and Eartha. Her 5 brothers James, Spellman, LeRoyal, Arthur and Percy. Her eight grandchildren Jeremy, Jordan, Justin and Joshua Trimble; Fallon, Sydney and Quentin Smith; and Jada Jones. Her sister-in-law Anna Jones. She is survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Rosa Martin was preceded in death by her daughter Teschia Martin; her parents James LeBlanc Sr. and Sophia LeBlanc; her brother Paul LeBlanc and her sisters Mary Peterson and Jackie Sue Rodney. Rosa also has many fantastic friends who loved her dearly. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the United Negro College Fund (1-800-331-2244; www.UNCF.org) 8260 Willow Oaks Corporate Drive, PO Box 10444, Fairfax VA 22031 Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, July 26 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Convent, LA.
