He was born in Brigham City, Utah to Alvin LeeRue Allen and Polly Gurney. He was a graduate from Weber State College, Ogden, Utah in Accounting. He worked in the accounting field for the dairy industry for 35 years, including Carnation, Foremost and Darigold. He served a two and a half year Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Berlin, Germany. Larry met his eternal sweetheart, Phyllis Black of Clearfield, Utah while attending Weber State College. They were married on July 3, 1968 in the LDS Logan Temple. They were blessed with five beautiful children and 19 grandchildren. Larry and Phyllis were called to serve a mission together in the Washington Everett Mission for 14 months. He was faithful to the end. He is survived by his wife Phyllis; daughter Charlynn (Paul) Mugerian, daughter Melinda (Jason) Kiel, son Chad (Katie) Allen, dau ghter Danielle (Allen) Martineau, and son Bryan (Jessica) Allen; 19 grandchildren; his mother, Polly Allen, and siblings Fred (Daleine) Allen, Brigham City, UT; Douglas (Yolanda) Allen, Sandy, UT; Marcia (Don) Thompson, Hyde Park, UT; Donna (Darell) Bagley, Grand Prairie, Texas. BarrowTogether AgainUINTAH - Reva Argen Penrod Barrow, 87, died Sunday, May 29, 2005 at Ogden Regional Medical Center. She was born April 20, 1918 in Ogden, a daughter of George Marion and Sara Mariah Hodson Penrod. She was raised and educated in Ogden graduating from Weber County High School where she was Salutatorian. She also attended Weber College. Reva married Jesse Thomas Barrow on April 28, 1937 in Logan. Jesse preceded her in death on February 12, 1987. She lived on a railroad outfit car traveling between Oregon, California, Nevada and Utah until the early 1940's. She lived in Vallejo, California until 1947; Tracy, California until 1980; Campbellsville, Kentucky until 1980 and in Uintah until her death. Reva was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving in various callings including Young Women's President, Relief Society President and wife to the Bishop. She worked with both the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts organizations. Reva's hobbies an d interests were art, stitchery, sewing, crafts, creative writing and poetry, bird watching and horticulture. Surviving are one daughter, Klee Barrow (Wayne) Marchant, one son, Donald J. (Carol) Barrow, eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Dale Penrod and Gary Penrod. She was preceded in death by one sister, Freda Penrod, four brothers, Ross, Marion, Joseph and Marlin Penrod, and a grandson, Ross Barrow. Chapman NORTH OGDEN - Jenevieve "Jean" Buchanan Chapman, 81, passed away Monday, May 30, 2005 at her home in North Ogden. Jean was born September 1, 1923 in Springville, Utah, to Boyd and Catherine Boyer Buchanan. She married Harold John Chapman on August 8, 1947. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple. Jean was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many important callings including Temple Officiator, Relief Society and Young Women's Presidents, and an advisor to the Young Adults. She served with the U.S. Marines during World War II. She enjoyed, and was good at, sewing, decorating and cooking. She was a great mother and homemaker, and children enjoyed being around her. Surviving are her husband, Harold, of North Ogden; daughter, Denise (Jeff) Shanks; sons, Alan (Peggy) Chapman, Kirk (Colleen) Chapman, Neil Chapman, 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters and on e brother, Marba B. Beer, Verelene B. Haws, Betty Jo B. Parker and Lovell L. Buchanan. Chavez, Juan Andres Juan Andres Chavez1910 - 2005 LAYTON - Juan Andres Chavez, 95, passed away Monday, May 30, 2005 at home surrounded by his loving family of natural causes. Juan was born March 6, 1910 in Carracas, Colorado to Manuel and Antonia Chavez, where he helped operate the family farm. As a teen he also worked for the railroad, his income was brought home to help his parents. During this time he also worked in the building of the Sacred Heart Church in Durango, Colorado, made of stone. It's still in use today. He left home at age 20 to make his own life. During the next few years he traveled throughout the country working in various jobs. With prior service in the U.S. Army he was again called back to service in 1941. After extensive training he participated in combat during WWII in the Mediterranean Theater, North Africa, Sicily, and Italy where he was awarded two Purple Hearts, Campaign Medals, two Bronze Stars for valor and his most prized Combat Infantry Badge (C.I.B.). He married Melita De luvina on February 25, 1946 in Durango, Colorado. They lived in Colorado, California, and here in Utah since 1951. Together they had five wonderful children; Carlos, Keller, TX; John (Valene), Layton, UT; Lewis (Melody), Nampa, ID; Ray, Clinton, UT; and Loretta (Neil), So. Weber, UT. He enjoyed his 16 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren, they were his pride and joy. Juan was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, and helped with church maintenance after retirement. Juan worked as a warehouseman at Hill Air Force Base until he retired. His hobbies and interests included lapidary, jewelry making, leatherworks, and he loved to fish and hunt with his sons. Preceded in death by; parents, three brothers, four sisters, three daughters-in-law, Linda, Holly and Kathy, grandson, Chad and great-granddaughter, Shaylynn. Ellertson, Cody W. Cody W. Ellertson PLAIN CITY - Cody Wells Ellertson, 21, died Tuesday, May 31, 2005, West of Rock Springs, Wyoming from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born November 28, 1983 in Logan, a son of Clyde Leslie and Phyllis Jarrett Ellertson. Cody lived most of his life in Plain City and was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Plain City 2nd Ward. He served a mission to the Dominican Republic Santiago Mission. He was working in the construction industry as an iron worker for C.K. Construction Company. Cody was a member of Fremont FFA and competed in many contests. He was also a member of VICA Automotive Team and loved to work on his truck, "Rusty". He enjoyed spending time with his many friends, especially his special friend, Ashley East. Surviving are his parents of Plain City; four brothers and one sister, Clyde Ellertson Jr., Plain City; Jesse (Heidi) Ellertson, Farr West; Michael Ellertson, Tyler Ellertson, and Deyette Ellertson , all of Plain City. Mike was born September 2, 1944, in Ogden, Utah, the son of Norman Roland and Neta Elizabeth England Farr. Mike was educated in Ogden and graduated from Ben Lomond High School, after which he attended Weber State College. During his life he resided in Ogden, Riverdale, Las Vegas and Hooper. On June 12, 1964, Mike married Mary Elaine Strong, in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. As an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he contributed greatly to the youth and scouting programs. Mike was a good provider owning his own construction business. Mike enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, snowmobiling and four-wheeling. He was active in recreational sports when he was younger. He loved riding horses and being with his family, especially his grandchildren. Mike is survived by his wife, Mary; three sons, John D. (Angie) Strong, Hadlock, NC; Michael J . Holmes FARMINGTON - Our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt, Janet Amanda Wilcox Holmes, 87, passed away May 30, 2005, after a lengthy illness. She was born April 20, 1918, in LaJolla, California to John Milton Wilcox and Norma Farr Wilcox. Both parents were born and raised in Ogden, Utah. Janet was born in California where her father was stationed during World War I. After her father was sent to France, her mother returned to Utah, where Janet spent most of her life. Her childhood years she had the feeling of being raised in a large family because she had a close extended family. She has one younger brother, Dr. Milton Farr Wilcox (EvaJean) of South Ogden, Utah and sister, Miriam Wilcox Jensen, (deceased) husband Reese Jensen of Brigham City. When she was almost 18, she met Raymond Harold Holmes of Salt Lake City, Utah. After courting for four years, they married on May 12, 1939, in Ogden, Utah. They were later sealed in the Ogden LDS Temple. They had two children, Rama Chamberlin of Orem, Utah and Brent Robert Holmes (Susan) of Farmington, Utah. Janet is the grandmother of 11 and great-grandmother of 12. She has many nieces, nephews, and great-grand nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and sister. Janet has always been active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in the Primary for over 25 years, teaching in Sunday School and Relief Society. She has also been active in many service clubs including Chereya Club where she has served several times as an officer and President, and the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, Camp Spinner. She has also enjoyed her several bridge groups with lifelong friends who have played together and been friends since grade school, high school, and college. After her children were in school she began working at a doctor's office when they lived in Idaho Falls, Idaho and then at Weber State University for many years. She loved to learn and for years took classes at Weber and religion classes at the LDS Institute. She and her friends also attended Weber's plays together. She was also very involved in the care of aged aunts, her mother, as well as her husband. Janet as made friends where ever she has gone, and her family and friends will miss her association. The family wishes to thank Country Care Assisted Living and Applegate Home Care and Hospice for help, encouragement, and comfort during these last few weeks of Janet's Life. She was born on March 14, 1923, in the family home at Ogden, Weber County, Utah. She was the fourth of six children born to Herschel and Myrtle Stephens Judd. She married Harold Pratt Woods on April 8, 1943, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Her husband Harold Pratt Woods passed away from an extended illness during July, 1957. Three children were born of the marriage with Harold Pratt Woods, Sue M. (Paul) Larsen, Tremonton, UT; Shelley K. (Michael) Stark, Boiling Springs, SC; Thomas H. (Shawna) Woods, Phoenix, AZ. She married Norman S. Hoyal, during November, 1958, in the Logan LDS Temple. Norman S. Hoyal brought three children to the family through marriage of a former spouse that likewise passed away in 1957, Harold N. (Barbara) Hoyal, Orem, UT; Kenneth (Diane) Hoyal, Ogden; and Janet (Robert) Brian, Taylor, UT. She was rai sed in the Ogden area and attended Ogden City Schools. She graduated from Ogden High School in 1941 and Weber State University in 1980. She worked 33 years for the Mountain Bell Telephone Company and 13 years for the Ogden School District. She was an accomplished seamstress, poet and gardener. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and always referenced her family associations and a her pioneer ancestry. She is survived by three siblings Beth (Marvin) Felt, Ogden; Everett (Reba) Judd, Ogden; and Glenn Judd, St. George, UT. Preceding her in death was one sister Katherine Olsen Dillman; one brother Douglas Judd; one granddaughter Jo Marie Snyder; and one grandson Shaun Dee Snyder. She has 23 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. After a long battle with cancer, she returned home to family members and Heavenly Father. Ann was born in Ogden, Utah May 8th 1943 to Warren Sevy and Evelyn Todd White. She married her love, George Kelly on September 19th 1961. Ann was a loving and giving mother, wife, grandma and friend to many. She was known to many as Grandma Ann. Ann was a foster parent for 20 years, where she was very generous and loving. The last 13 years Ann was a Teachers Aid working with special needs kids in Granite School District. She truly loved the kids and they loved her back. She loved doing handicrafts including sewing, cabbage patch, porcelain dolls and knitting. Ann has served in many different callings in the LDS church. Ann is survived by her husband George Kelly, three sons, Joe and Patti Kelly, Tom and Lesley Kelly, Ron and Connie Kelly and five grandkids, David, Ashley, Ryan, Merissa, and Amanda. Nance BRIGHAM CITY - Loraine Duncan Nance, 93, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday, May 31, 2005 at the Brigham Nursing and Retreat. Loraine was born October 25, 1911 in Meadow, Utah, the third child of David and Louie Stringham Duncan. She was raised in Clearfield, Utah and was educated in the Davis County Schools. She met the love of her life, Wendell M. Nance, at a dance and they were married in the Logan LDS Temple on October 23, 1928. Wendell died January 17, 1991. Loraine worked as a cook at the Davis County Schools while her children were in school. She then attended LDS Business College where she became proficient in business skills and became manager of Time Finance. Her greatest accomplishment was her three children: Paul (Dottie) Nance, Blen (Lynne) Nance and Ann (Don) Davis, and her 20 grandchildren. Each one was a special treasure to her, as well as her 54 great-grandchildren and her 17 great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her children a nd grandchildren, Loraine is also survived by two sisters, Blenda Darrell and Leatha Gaylor, and two sisters-in-law, Melba Duncan and Nellie Duncan. She will be missed by all. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters, three brothers and two great-grandchildren. Loraine led a life of service to everyone she met - strangers as well as loved ones. She taught her children the value of work with love. Mom, we'll miss you. He was born December 30, 1933 in Uvalde, Texas the son of Leonardo M. and Juanita Castillo Ortiz. Salomon served in the U.S. Air Force for eight years. He married Melba Ortiz, November 18, 1955 in Layton. He retired from HAFB in 1993. Solomon was a member of HAFB Officials Assoc., DAV, coach and official for the ASA (Amateur Softball Assoc). Salomon was a faithful member of the Valley View Stake, Layton 8th Ward. He served in many callings, High Priest, MIA Presidency and Athletic Director. Surviving are his wife, Melba M. Ortiz, children, Yolanda (Curtis), KayJean (Tom), Sheldon (Melissa), Leslie, Cindy, Wendy, Angela (Ron), foster children, Mark McDonald, Amy Ortiz, Kriston Asbury, 18 grandchildren and one great-grandson. Pierce, Edward E. Edward E. Pierce 1929 - 2005 LAYTON - Edward E. Pierce, age 75, passed away on Tuesday, May 31, 2005 after a long and courageous battle with heart failure. He was born on September 21, 1929 in Goldsboro, North Carolina to Pauline Filler and Richard Pierce. He married his sweetheart, Mary C. Joyner, on April 1, 1950, and was later sealed to his lovely bride in the Salt Lake Temple. Edward honorably served his country in the United States Air Force. He retired after 20 years of service and always felt a sense of appreciation for those brave men and women who served and continue to serve this great country in order to preserve the freedoms we all enjoy. After retiring from the Air Force, Ed worked for the Dept. of Mental Health for the State of Oklahoma. While in Oklahoma, Ed served in many callings in the LDS Church (i.e., Bishop, High Council, etc.) while raising his family. He loved sports and every chance he had, he was found couching the youth of his Ward, many times to victory. Twenty years later, Ed retired from the State of Oklahoma and moved his family to Utah to be close to his children who were attending BYU and Ricks College. As a result, he always rooted for the Oklahoma Sooners and the BYU Cougars. Bored with retirement, Ed began working for the LDS Church at Promised Valley Playhouse in 1984 as the House Manager. Because Ed was such a people person, his work at Promised Valley Playhouse was nothing but a lot of fun for him. Ed's testimony reflected his love of the Savior and his fellow man. He always gave to those in need and he truly loved and cared for those he met, even to the end. Ed is survived by his loving wife, Mary Pierce and children Jeri (Paul) Johnson, Terry Pierce and Gary (Kathy) Pierce. He is also the grandfather of four beautiful grandchildren, who he adored. Porter, DeVere DeVere Porter MORGAN - Alta DeVere "Dee" Simper Porter, 89, passed away May 31, 2005 in Ogden, Utah. She was born on March 5, 1916 in Vernal, Utah the daughter of Walter Simper and Edna Maria Bouwthorpe Simper. Dee resided in Vernal and attended school. After graduation she went to Grand Junction to school, and then moved to Salt Lake City where she graduated from LDS Business College. On June 22, 1940 she married Russell C. Porter in Morgan, Utah. He preceded her in death February 5, 1990. She was employed at State Finance in SLC and Morgan Co. Assessors Office, followed by employment at Weber State College in the book store. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Morgan First Ward and served in Young Women, Relief Society, and enjoyed being a Visiting Teacher. Grandma Dee was a spiritual woman with a deep love and abiding faith in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was a charter member of the Culturettes Club and enjoyed the friendship and ass ociation of all club members. She enjoyed her home and loved to cook and fuss over her family. Surviving are two sons, Ronald (Anne Marie) Porter, Morgan; Dennis D. Porter, three grand children Matthew West (Kellie) Porter, Neisha (Steve) Beltran; Jade Russell Porter; and four great-grandchildren Madisen and Talor Porter and Cayle and Cullen Beltran. Also surviving are one sister and brother-in-law, Verna and Charles Cardwell of Salt Lake City. Preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Irvin and Walter B. and two sisters Lennie and Jennie. Jesse was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. He was active in the functions of St. Paul's church and school. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. Todd was born with a love of music, played the piano and had an amazing singing voice. He had a winning personality, loved children and had a tender heart. His daughter was the love of his life. Swertfeger, Evone Austin Evone Austin Swertfeger OGDEN - The angels came to take Evone home Wednesday, June 1st, 2005. Mrs. Evone Austin Swertfeger, 86, of Manor Care, died Wednesday, June 1st of heart failure. Evone was born May 9, 1919 in Garland, Utah, a daughter of Rulon Austin and Lucy Fryer. She married Fred A Swertfeger on May 2, 1941 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They were later divorced. She attended Ogden City Schools. As a young girl Evone sold tickets at the Egyptian Theater. Later she traveled with her girlfriend across the country selling portraits. As an adult, she worked as a grocery checker, as a typist at the Defense Depot Ogden, Sears, and American Canning Co. Evone attended First Christian Church of Ogden. Her sweet spirit and positive attitude left a lasting impression on everyone she came in contact with. Guests often mentioned how they would visit her in hope of cheering her up, but they always left with their own spirits lifted. Evone was a born again Christian, a humble woman who serv ed God her whole life. She had a strong Christian faith and belief in Jesus Christ, her Lord and Savior. Now she is in heaven visiting all of her Christian friends and her favorite disciples of the bible that she talked so much about John and Paul. She is resting peacefully and without pain in the open arms of Jesus. Surviving are one son, Michael (Dianna) Swertfeger, Ogden, Utah; four grandchildren, Scot, Stacy, Brady and Jamie; and nine great-grandchildren. Vaughan, Glen Edwin Glen Edwin Vaughan Born February 18, 1920 OGDEN - Our loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather went to his heavenly home on June 1, 2005 after a struggle with cancer. Glen was reared and educated in Malad, Idaho and attended Snow College. Glen was a Veteran of WWII who proudly served his county as a Gunnery Sergeant in the Marine Corps from 1940-46. He was a great athlete in his younger years and boasted that he was the oldest man to ever bowl a 300 at age of 76. He married, Mary Ekins, who passed away in 1963 and later married Larene Clark in 1967 and were sealed in the Ogden LDS Temple in 2001. Glen is survived by his wife, Larene Clark Vaughan, his three children Eric, Buzz and Donna, his 12 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Glen, we all love you very much and are grateful for the things you have taught us all. Whetton, Martha Alice Martha Alice Whetton Martha Alice Whetton passed away peacefully on May 27, following a long illness with Alzheimer's disease and complications from pneumonia. She was born July 26, 1920 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada to Anna and Adolph Hundt. She married Floyd W. Whetton on September 8, 1951. Together they raised five children and traveled extensively as part of Floyd's service in the U.S. Air Force. She became a U.S. citizen in 1956. Martha's greatest pride and joy was her family. She loved to cook, work in her garden, knit, ice skate, dance, take her little dog for walks, and be of service. A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Escalante Ward), she enjoyed teaching young children and sharing her many wonderful cooking talents. Martha was always patient and cheerful and even with the devastating effects Alzheimer's, she could still smile and laugh. Her family and friends benefited from her cute personality and giving nature. Martha loved her little home and was fort unate to remain there until the time of her death. Martha was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Floyd; sister, Gertrude; brother, Albert; and one nephew, Robert Falconer. She is survived by daughters, Linda; Patty (Tucson); sons, Ken (Maria) Tucson, David (Miriam) Gilbert, and Floyd (Mary) Tucson; ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Visitation is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 2 at East Lawn Palms Mortuary, 5801 E. Grant Road.
