Bruen, Elizabeth Kap Smith Elizabeth Kap Smith Bruen 08/07/31 - 06/12/05 OGDEN - Elizabeth Bruen, 73, died Sunday, June 12, 2005 at a local nursing home of causes incident to age. She was born on August 7, 1931 in Ogden to Jerry and Marie Kap. She married Fred H. Smith on August 13, 1949 and their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan L.D.S. Temple. Fred died on January 11, 1965. Elizabeth then married Charles E. Bruen, III on July 3, 1970. She worked at DDO and IRS for 25 years. She retired in 1992, relocating to Island Park, ID. She enjoyed camping, reading, crocheting, traveling and spending time with her family. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She held various teaching positions in the church as well as being active in the cub scout program. She is survived by her husband, Charles E. Bruen and her children and grandchildren, Dale Smith and family, Robert Smith and family, Karen Garcia and family, Craig Smith and family, Chuck Bruen and family, Mark Bruen and family, Curtis Bruen and family. He was born on July 7, 1919 in Ogden, Utah, the son of Jule Combe, Sr. and Beatrice Laura Parker. He graduated in the first graduating class of Ogden High School. He married Margaret Farley, she preceded him in death, On December 7, 1962 he married Gloria Glauser in Ogden. Jule served in the U.S. Air Force during WWII. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had served as a scout leader and is an elder. Jule worked as a sheet metal mechanic and worked for Superior Air Handling for 40 plus years, as one of their best men. He was a hard worker and worked from sun-up to sundown. He could fix anything or build anything. He was a jack-of-all-trades. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and traveling. He loved his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Gloria; three sons and five daughters, Suzanne Combe, Eatonville, WA; Lynda (Tom) Cox, O gden; Michael (Debee) Combe, Tremonton; Dawn (Brent) Doxey, Ogden; Ronald (Shawna) Blackhurst, Salt Lake City; Sharon (Phil) Judd, Ogden; Becky (Mark) Murray, Hyde Park, UT; Jeffrey Blackhurst, Ogden; 32 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers and four sisters; Jack Combe, Pleasant View; Duane (Mary Lou) Combe, Ogden; Maxine Thompson, West Jordan; Clarean Ricketts, Washington Terrace; Carol (Ralph) Wiggins, Roy and Pat (Ronald) Van Alfen, Ogden. Galvez, Gayla Brown Gayla Brown Galvez 1929 - 2005 Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend, Gayla Brown Galvez passed away in Ogden on June 12, 2005, surrounded by her loving family. After a 2 1/2 year battle with cancer. In spite of this up hill battle, she fought a gallant fight. Gayla's unwavering faith in the Gospel of Jesus Christ never faltered. She stated several times, " I'm not afraid to die, I've had heaven here on earth, I don't see how heaven could be any better." Gayla was the 8th child of nine children born to Mary Blodwin Johns and Lawrence Cyrus Brown born September 10, 1929 in Eden, Utah. Gayla graduated from Ogden High School in May 1947. On June 15, 1947 in Berkeley, California she married Fred Galvez. Their marriage was solemnized January 21, 1953 in the Logan Temple. Gayla was an active member of the LDS Church. She taught primary in the Mt. Ogden Stake for 23 years and served as a Stake missionary in the Burch Creek Stake with her husband for five years. After Gayla's children had grown she worked for the IRS and received numerous proficiency awards during her 20 years of service. Gayla participated in an aerobics group, which she attended three times a week. Gayla loved ballroom dancing and she danced regularly for over 50 years. Gayla and her husband were the co-sponsors of the Variane's Dance Club. Gayla is survived by her husband, Fred, four daughters, two sons and one sister, Venetta (Jean) Hughes. Gayla leaves a beautiful heritage of six children, 19 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren. Gayla's children are: Marleen (Ladd Hollist, deceased); Karen (Thom) Wight,; Curtis (Liz) Galvez; Jean (Dave) Willoughby; Kevin Galvez (deceased); Lisa (Lynn) Scadden, and Brad (Lisa) Galvez. Preceding Gayla in death were her parents, a son Kevin Galvez, an infant brother Tommy Brown, and a grandson Brody Wight. Perry Coy Grant was born Nov. 4th 1977 in Salt Lake City, UT to parents Wayne and Kathy Grant. Perry tragically left us on June 9th 2005 in an airplane crash. Perry is the 2nd of seven children in his family. Perry's interest in aviation was evident at a very early age. As a child he built and flew model airplanes and pursued his career in aviation by obtaining his Private, Commercial, Instrument, Multi-Engine and Instructor certificates. Perry became a well-respected pilot and flight instructor. His talents in aviation will resonate throughout the aviation industry for generations to come. He logged nearly 4,000 hrs. of accident free flight time in a variety of flight operations. Perry also found success in owning and operating his own Heating and Air Company for the last seven years. More than anything, Perry especially valued his children, family and close relationships he had with many people. Perry, we already miss you deeply and look forward to the day we are to gether again. Perry is survived by Jennifer Grant and three children, Turbo, Lexie, Britain; Natalie Huntsman and future Jeppesen; parents, Wayne and Kathy Grant; six brothers and sisters: Brady (Courtney), Hilary (Sean), Chad (Katrina), Tyler, Ashley, Carter; grandparents: Coy Puckett, Perry and Pat Grant, and Betty Grant; and numerous other family members. Hansen, Lee Marion ST. GEORGE, Utah - Lee Marion Hansen, 72, passed away June 12, 2005 in St. George, Utah. He was born November 30, 1932 to Alfred Henry Hansen and Lydia Sophia Hindberg in Corinne, Utah. He married Ruth Carol Mann on July 22, 1955 in Garland, Utah and their marriage was sealed in the Logan Temple on December 14, 1956. Lee was a Korean War veteran and served his country from July 1952 to May 1954. His years of employment included working at Swifts, farming and 34 years at Thiokol. He served as Scout and Explorer Leader in the Ward and Stake. He was a devout member of the LDS Church and was an Elders Quorum President and Executive Secretary. Lee loved working in his yard and had a lawn that was envied by all. He inherited his fathers passion for woodworking and took great pleasure in it. He also enjoyed playing the washtub base with his brothers, Wes, Vern and Dee in the "Sharecroppers" band. He is survived by his wife, Carol; children, Carol Lee (Kevin) Parrish, Mesquite, NV, Sally (John) Higley, Perry, UT, Lisa (Thom) Payne, Phelan, California, Darrel (Lisa) Hansen, Las Vegas, NV, Linda (Ross) Deters, Grand Junction, CO, and Mitzi (Eric) Mahler, Pickerington, OH; 32 grandchildren; and 17-1/2 great-grandchildren. Kiesel, Norma Barrie Norma Kiesel died Saturday, June 11, 2005 in Boise, Idaho at the age of 94, where she lived since 1969. Norma was born in Marysville, California in 1911. She married Robert A. Kiesel in 1937 soon after they met on a ski vacation in the Sierra Mountains. Norma and Bob celebrated 56 years of marriage. In 1947, they moved from California to Ogden, Utah where they lived for 22 years until moving to Boise. During her years in Ogden, Norma was a member of the Junior League. She continued Junior League activities after moving to Boise. Norma loved the outdoors and passed along this love to her children. Of the many outdoor activities, Norma liked most, skiing was her favorite. She also enjoyed horseback riding, tennis, and bird hunting. Norma had a special fondness and talent for flower gardening. Flowers flourished under her touch and her gardens were a constant joy to her family and friends. Norma was a devoted wife and mother. She was also devoted to her fiends, and f ondly enjoyed hosting social times with them. Through kindheartedness she made the world a better place to those around her. She will be missed. The last few years of her life, Norma was under the assisted-living care of the staff at Ivy Place in Boise. Her expert care was full of genuine warmth and love, and this was a great comfort to all who knew her. Norma is survived by her two children, daughter Barrie Kiesel Ernst of Boise, and son Rob Kiesel of Ketchum; her two grandchildren, Jess Kiesel and Kaelin Kiesel both of Ketchum; a brother, Bill Barrie; and a sister, Nadene Schuler of Lincoln, California. McGavin, Ida Mae DeWitt LAYTON - Our loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Ida Mae DeWitt McGavin, 77, passed from this life on June 13, 2005 in her home, surrounded by her five children. She will be reunited with her loving husband, mother, sister and many others. Ida was born Nov. 2, 1927 in Pierre, SD to Hermon and Janice (Lantz) DeWitt. On June 29, 1948 she married Lorin Keith McGavin in Reno, NV. Ida worked as a supervisor for the IRS in Ogden for 26 years until her retirement. She had a special gift for art and spent countless hours creating oil paintings which her family will always enjoy. She also loved tending her flowers and watching the hummingbirds. She was born August 21, 1938 in Park City, Utah, a daughter of Richard Paul and Myrtle Thompson Walker. Myrtle married Boyd L. Putman, Sr. and later divorced. She was reared and educated in Park City. She worked at Hill Air Force Base as a computer secretary. Myrtle was affiliated with the Foster Grandparent Program and the Eagle Auxiliary Association. Her hobbies included reading, crocheting, and Indian culture. She is survived by her "Special Companion Shorty"; one son, Boyd "Butch" (Kelly) Putman, Clearfield; three daughters, Connie (Arthur ) Bates-Putman, Ogden; Gail (Gordon) Owens, North Ogden; and Juanita (Greg) Reed, Ogden; 13 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. Rock, Erma Lucille Hansen Erma Lucille Hansen Rock, 95, died on June 11, 2005 in Ogden, Utah. Born in Bear River City, Utah on December 11, 1909, to Rasmus Hansen and Christina Hansen. She married Jacob Lee Rock on October 1, 1927 in Brigham City, Utah. The marriage was later solemnized in the Ogden LDS Temple. She lived in Bear River City and Carmel, California. She was actively involved in the Relief Society and taught primary in the Bear River City Ward. She made the best Oatmeal Cookies from scratch and a delicious Chocolate Butter Cake. Her door was always open. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and Granny. Toward the end of her life she had a hard time walking, but her mind was crystal clear, witty, and everyone enjoyed her sense of humor. She is survived by her children, Lee DeVere (Barbara) Rock, Torrance, California and Betty Lou Rock (Dean) Peterson, Roy, Utah, four grandchildren, Stanley Rock, Torrance, California; Phillip Rock, (Vangie) Gardena, California, Don (Dor is) Peterson, Kaysville, Utah; Cheryl (Randy) Hansen, Dammeron Valley, Utah; ten great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. She was born in Ogden, Utah, October 2, 1920 to Thomas E. McKay and Fawn Brimhall McKay. She grew up in Huntsville, Utah and attended Weber High School in Ogden, later graduating from B.Y. High School after spending two years in Switzerland where her father was Mission President. While attending Brigham Young University, Barbara married Dr. Oliver R. Smith who was a Journalism Professor. Mrs. Smith worked for several businesses in the Provo area; Taylor Brothers Department Store, Rowley's, Melayne Printers, and two U.S. Government Census positions. Later she joined the staff at Utah Technical College (now UVSC), retiring in 1985 as Assistant Dean of Continuing Education. Mrs. Smith was well known among Provo City employees, having served five years on the Provo City Planning Commission and for seven years on the Board of Adjustments. With this background, she successfully ran for a seat on the Provo City Council in 1987, serving for four years. While her husband was active in the Air Force Reserve, she was active in the auxiliary. She was a member for many years of the Beta Sorosis Literary Club, BYU Women, the Republican Party and many PTA organizations while her children were attending school. She was preceded in death by her husband in December, 1990, and also by two sisters, Fawn McKay Brodie and Flora McKay Jensen Crawford, and a brother, Thomas Brimhall McKay. She is survived by eight children, 53 grandchildren, and 77 great-grandchildren. Barbara and Oliver had five daughters and three sons, Barbara Kay Rytting (J. Howard Rytting) of Lawrence, Kansas; Olivia Lea Baird (Charles A. Baird) of Lehi; Kenneth McKay Smith (JoAnne King) of Mesa, Arizona; Ronald McKay Smith (Colleen Johnson) of Orem; Rebecca Snyder (Richard L. Snyder) of Tillamook, Oregon; Deborah Annis of Provo; Dorothy Gillespie (John K. Gillespie) of Orem; and Richard McKay Smith (Cindy Naylor) of North Salt Lak e. She is also survived by a sister, Louise McKay Card, Salt Lake City, and numerous nieces and nephews who were always considered part of the family. The family gives special thanks to granddaughter Joanna Snyder for providing tender, competent care to Grandma Smith during her final years. He was born August 31, 1953 in Gunnison, CO to William Martin and Nancy Lee Cunningham Tezak. Bill served in the U.S. Army and was an atomic munitions demolition specialist. He worked for Bountiful City and Davis County paving roads, snow plowing and drove the garbage truck. Billy lived in Layton, Utah until he was 13, then became a cowboy, living with his uncle on their ranch in CO. Billy loved his family, work, play and his Harley motorcycles. He is survived by his mother, daughter Nevada Lynn Tezak: grandchildren, Kaya and Nathan Garza; brother, Kenny Tezak; sisters, Linda Murray and Sandy Dodson. Winger, Alton Leo Alton Leo Winger OGDEN - Early in the spring morning, of Monday, June 13, 2005 Alton left this earthly life to reunite with his father, mother, four brothers and one sister. After struggling with his health for more than two years he was ready to go home. In his words: My life is the story of a common man who never achieved great fame, and never wanted it. Just a man that loved his family, believed in being honest, admired the beautiful things in life, cherished his freedom, loved the Lord, and believed that every one was entitled to enjoy life as long as they upheld good principles. Alton Leo Winger was born September 23, 1924 in Preston, Idaho, the son of Asa Loren and Merelda Taylor Winger. After attending Preston High School he entered the Navy in 1943 to serve in the Solomon Islands during World War II. He returned to marry his eternal sweetheart, Donna Beckstead, on May 21, 1945 in Ogden, Utah. They were later sealed in the Logan LDS Temple. He worked as a welder for the U.S. Government, where he received several awards for his inventions to make work quicker and easier. After retiring in 1975, Alton began his own business painting and hanging wallpaper both commercially and for friends and neighbors. He loved to work and taught his family the joys of working hard, caring for the earth and those you love. There was always enough in his garden to feed the family and neighborhood as well as beauty for the soul. He showed his kindness and generosity by serving in the Bishopric, High Priest Group Leader, and Young Men's Organizations. His later years were spent in doing extensive genealogy work, traveling with his wife, brother Earl and sister-in-law Barbara, and caring for all those he loved. He served as an example to all and will be greatly missed but always remembered for his positive attitude, forgiving and accepting nature, work ethic, honesty, and being so proud of his family. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Donna Beckstead Winger; one daughter, Irene (Bob) Thurston; grandchildren, Melissa (Mark) Atkinson, Adam (Jeneen) Murdock, and Matthew (Amy) Murdock; six great-grandchildren; and his brother Earl (Barbara) Winger.
