He died peacefully of natural causes at age 93 on June 14, 2005, in his home in Ogden, Utah. George was a graduate of Manistique High School, MI, and a member of the U.S. Naval Academy class of 1936. He graduated from Lewis Institute of Technology (IIT) in Industrial Engineering. He was a journeyman tool and die maker and was employed as a Plant Manager for Elkay Manufacturing Co. for 25 years in Cicero and Broadview, IL. He was also instrumental in opening Elkay's new Ogden plant, the Dayton-Ogden Corporation. He retired in 1979. He was a 50-year member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, 32nd Degree Mason, and Past-Master of Leyden Laurel Lodge #1057. He was also a member of the Ogden Golf and Country Club, Nordic Valley Men's Association, and Riverside Men's Association. He was a Trustee and Deacon of Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church, Oak Park, IL, and 1st Presbyterian Church, Ogden, UT. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Laura Jean Wadsworth Buttars of Chicago, IL. Their four children: Kent Ray Buttars (Patricia Stimac) of Seattle, WA, Georgia Kay Buttars Wulff (George Wulff III - deceased) of Minocqua, WI, Thomas Alan Buttars (Maureen Neal) of Vermillion, SD, and Jane Lurene Buttars (Daniel Harris) of Princeton, NJ. Grandchildren: Erica Wulff (Jesse Rawling) of Platteville, WI, and Kurt Wulff (Kristin Tjelle) of Trondhiem, Norway. Great-grandchildren: Max Elmo Rawling and Sivert Tjelle Wulff. Nephew: Joseph Marceny (Mariella Beliz) of Englewood, CO. George enjoyed golf, bridge and family life. He made three holes-in-one during his lifetime and shot his age at 87. He retired from the golf course at 89. According to his wishes, his body was donated to the School of Medicine at the University of Utah. Family remembrance will be held at a future date. Pierce, Bernice E. OGDEN - Bernice E. Pierce, age 96, passed away on June 9, 2005 at the Mt. Ogden Nursing Home. She was born July 1, 1908 in Evanston, WY to Phoebe and Peter Kenney. She married Dale Miller. They were later divorced. She married Samuel Pierce. Bernice received her teaching credentials from Walla Walla College in College Place, WA and embarked on a teaching career that lasted for decades in various disciplines. She taught elementary grades at both Wahlquist and North Ogden elementary schools, as well as in the Seventh-Day Adventist school system. She also taught piano, organ and ceramics well into her eighties. Bernice was loving, caring, compassionate and generous. Her wisdom and spirituality will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She is survived by one sister, Marvel Kenney of Medford, OR; two children, Kenney D. Miller (Mary Ann) of West Haven, UT and Ronald S. Pierce (Judy) of Farr West, UT, seven grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. She was p receded in death by her husband, Samuel and brother, Darrel Kenney. Published in the Standard-Examiner on 6/19/2005. Pitcher, Richard Miles Richard Miles Pitcher Richard Miles Pitcher died on June 16, 2005 at Logan Nursing and Rehabilitation. He was born May 14, 1922 in Smithfield, Utah to James Edgar and Johanna Miles Pitcher. He was the third son born to the family. Richard grew up in Smithfield enjoying the association of many cousins and living next door to Grandma Miles. He often reminisced about the good times and adventures they enjoyed. He learned to work hard while working with his father milking cows and doing farm chores. Richard attended schools in Smithfield and North Cache High School. He served for a brief time in the United States Marine Corp. He married Donna Lou Reeder in Preston, Idaho on August 2, 1941. They raised their family in Smithfield. Dad worked at several different occupations but in 1955 he became a licensed journeyman plumber. He operated Pitcher Plumbing for several years but eventually became a union plumber with local 348. He worked in the Ogden area for many years and commuted daily. Richar d and Donna Lou were sealed in the Logan Temple on June 5, 1970. Health problems forced an early retirement but provided Mom and Dad many special times together. Dad and Mom enjoyed many travel adventures with their truck and trailer. Uncle Keith and Aunt Golda McCombs were favorite traveling companions. They were grateful for the experiences that they enjoyed together. They also served a temple mission for four years and attended the temple faithfully. Dad served as a faithful home teacher to several widows in the old Smithfield Fourth ward. He enjoyed the opportunity to serve and appreciated his companion, Wes Tarbet. Together they were quite a team. Dad's health has deteriorated in the last few years but he still tried to take care of things himself for as long as he could. He taught his children to work hard and be honest in their dealings. His two sons followed him in the occupation of plumber. His children and their spouses are Rebecca Ann (Becky) and Ivan Neilson, Logan; Maurice and Linda, Marriott-Slaterville; Paul and Elaine, Pleasant View; and Allen and Marilyn Grunig, Hyde Park. He has 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. He is survived by his spouse Donna Lou and one sister, Cleone Rifaat. He was preceded in death by his brothers Hal and Edgar, and one grandson, Wade H. Grunig. Mom expresses appreciation to the staff at Logan Nursing and Rehabilitation who have provided such kindness to Dad's requests for help and Dr. Bart Avery. Funeral services will be held Monday, June 20, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. in the Smithfield 3rd ward chapel, 179 North 100 East. Friends and family may call at Nelson Funeral Home, 85 South Main, Smithfield, Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday at the church from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Interment will be in the Smithfield City Cemetery. Stid, Elizabeth Joan Anderson TREMONTON - Elizabeth Joan Anderson Stidham peacefully went home June 18, 2005. She was the daughter of George Edwin Anderson and Elizabeth Betty Boren. She had six brothers and one sister. She was a very thoughtful person who found unique ways to serve others. She is survived by her three children. Tomlinson passed away at his home on Thursday June 16, 2005 surrounded with his family and friends. Born August 24, 1924 in Standardville, Utah, the son of Caroline Dunn Tomlinson and Herbert Tomlinson. Herb attended school in Mt. Pleasant, Utah and graduated from Wasatch Academy. He joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and served during World War II. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Herb married Veone Brandon on August 7, 1947 in Elko, Nevada. Herb retired from Hill Air Force Base after 34 years of service as a machinist and later as an Engineer. Herb was an active volunteer at the Natural History Museum at the Union Station in Ogden, Utah. He was also an active member in the Golden Spike Gem and Mineral Society. He loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman. He enjoyed all sorts of outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, camping and collecting rocks. He was extremely talented in woodworking and kept his skills honed on a var iety of projects from picture frames to cabinetry. Herb lived his life exuberantly and the family is blessed with a lifetime of fond memories. He was preceded in death by father, Herbert Tomlinson, mother, Caroline Dunn Tomlinson, sister, Carrie Tucker, brother, John Tomlinson. He is survived by his wife, Veone, three daughters, Pamela Veone (a very special son-in-law, Terry) Wixom, Clearfield; Patty Lynn Ericksen, West Point; Anna Marie Hendrickson (Cory Olson), West Point; one son, Joe H. Tomlinson, Price; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, June 21, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Lindquist's Memorial Park at Layton, 1867 N. Fairfield Rd. Friends and family may call Tuesday from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. at Lindquists' Layton Mortuary, same address. Military honors will be accorded. The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thanks to all the staff of Vista Care Hospice for all the loving services they have provided, and to Dr. Regina Klein and her sta ff of the Utah Cancer Specialists in Layton, Utah.
