Harbertson, Alan Reed Alan Reed Harbertson OGDEN - On June 23, 2005, Alan Reed Harbertson, our beloved father and grandfather went back to heaven, escorted by angels and previous loved ones, including his wife Elaine. His passing away was of complications from cancer, but we suspect, mostly of a broken heart. He was born in Ogden, Utah on April 28, 1922, to his parents, James Leroy and Hattie Wiese Harbertson. He spent his early years with his siblings; Nile, Dan and Barbara. He attended Ogden High School where he met and fell in love with his sweetheart and companion of 65 years, Elaine Bingham Harbertson. They were joined for time and eternity on April 24, 1942, in the Salt Lake City Temple. Shortly following their wedding, Pop was called to the Navy to serve his country in the Pacific Theatre, during World War II, where he served with honor and distinction. Their loving union blessed them with five children; Nylene (Gonzales), Lyle Harbertson, Peggy (Combe), Patricia (Morrell) and Bret Harbertson. Pop at tended Weber State College and the University of Utah. He later worked for the Atomic Energy Commission, General Electric Corporation in Idaho Falls, Idaho, as a Health physicist, where he assisted the government and these major corporations in nuclear energy research and development and was recognized as a world expect in his field. He later worked as an instructor in the physics department at Weber State College, where many students benefited from his intelligence and ability to effectively convey complex concepts. 'Most everyone that spent any time with him soon recognized he was a "genius", as he could solve just about any problem, whether it was physics, fixing a TV set, the washing machine, or the car. After retirement, Pop stayed busy with his grandchildren and his wife, lovingly performing his list of 'honey-dos' that included endless hours of loving labor on their cabin at Henry's Lake, Idaho. Alan was devoted to his church and served in many capacities, but enjoyed his assignment as gospel doctrine teacher the most. He always had a smile and a hug for his family and had a very keen sense of humor and always had a new joke to tell. He particularly enjoyed a stimulation conversation with just about anyone. Pop had a love of animals, especially dogs and over the years, many of his pet companions were seen sitting in has lap, or sitting next to him in his car or truck. Pop and Mom had a wonderful group of life-long friends that gathered weekly to play cards, as well as share life experiences. Pop's lasting legacy is his five children, 18 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren and countless friends and acquaintances. He successfully lived his life and practiced many of the godly qualities of the angels that escorted him home. His life was the epitome of Love, Compassion, Forgiveness, Humility and GRACE. And for these reason and many others, he will be deeply missed by his family and many friends. Services will be held on Tuesday, June 28, 2005 at the Canyon View S take Center, 1000 E.
