She passed away peacefully in her sleep Sunday, May 29, 2005 after a long and difficult struggle with Multiple Sclerosis. After growing up in Tooele, she graduated from Tooele High School in 1966. She moved to Ogden, Utah and worked for Defense Depot Ogden in the early 70's. While working at DDO she met and married Thomas W. Close in 1974. They moved to Hooper, Utah in 1977 where they raised their daughter, Reb. After retiring from DDO she owned and operated C & K Boots and Crafts in Roy, Utah. She loved helping young couples create their wedding arrangements and tying bows was her specialty. She even learned how to tie bows with both arms in casts. She later worked at Chariot Auto Sales with her husband and continued working from home until her death. Her struggle with MS started during her childhood as she cared for her mother who was also diagnosed with the disease. When Julie was diagnosed in 1976, she became bound and determined to continue living her life. Every day was a struggle and every day was worth it. She was able to do so many things and touch so many lives. She and her daughter had an amazing bond. She dedicated her life to her daughter's happiness and success and was often heard to say how much she enjoyed living through her daughter's eyes. They made many trips together and Julie always was game for anything, including her most recent trip to London, England. Surviving are her father, Willard Jess (Kay) Higley; her brother, David (Sally) Higley; her loving husband and dedicated care-provider, Thomas W. Close; her adoring daughter, Reb; and her cherished companion dog, Teddy. She is preceded in death by her mother, Lorna Julia Higley and her brother, Jeffrey; and her dear friends, Ila and Albert Haas. The family expresses their deepest gratitude to all those who loved and cared for Julie. Sincerest appreciation to the Ballif family for their ti reless love, and to the Vasquez family for bringing joy to her final days. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 2, 2005 at 1 p.m. at the Hooper 6th Ward, 5500 South 4700 West. Culbertson, Barbara Jean Barbara Jean Culbertson LAYTON - Barbara Jean Culbertson, 75, passed away May 26, 2005 at her home. She was born May 19, 1930 to Clarence and Hileda Olson Sargent in Salt Lake City, UT. She married Don Culbertson on May 27, 1949 in Idaho. She was a member of the Church of JesusChrist of Latter-day Saints. She enjoyed traveling, sewing and reading. Barbara is survived by her husband, Don; her three sons, Steven Culbertson, Douglas Culbertson and Richard Culbertson. She is also survived by five grandchildren and one great grandchild. Goetsch, Billie Larae Taylor Billie LaRae Taylor Goetsch FARR WEST - Billie LaRae Taylor Goetsch, 79, passed away Saturday, May 28, 2005. She was born September 2, 1925, in Ogden, Utah, to Lee Clair and Alice Belle Lee Taylor. In June of 1952, Billie married Marvin E. Goet sch. He preceded her in death. She was raised in Ogden where she attended Weber Coun ty Schools. Billie was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She sang on the radio with her sister as part of the western band, Utah Play Boys. Billie enjoyed crocheting, knitting, needlework, of which she did a beautiful job, and gardening. She loved her cat, Tabby. She is survived by two foster children, William (Jeanne) Frerichs and Scott (Kathy) Frerichs, all of Oklahoma; a foster granddaughter, Genevieve Frerichs; a brother, Clair Lee (Dorothy) Taylor, Farr West; a sister, Alice Gay (Larry, deceased) Taylor Goetsch, Spirit Lake, IA; and many nieces and nephews. Billie was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and a sister, Lavina Taylor Baird. Graveside services will be held Thursday, June 2nd, at 11 a.m. at the Plain City Cemetery. Jeppesen, Raymond Roland R. Roland Jeppesen MANTUA - Raymond Roland Jeppesen, 68, passed on Saturday, May 28, 2005 at the Pioneer Care Center after a lingering illness. He was born on September 13, 1936 in Mantua, Utah, a son of Raymond Roland and Florence Emma Nelson Jeppesen. Roland was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He worked at Honeywell (Fram) Corporation as a machine operator, he retired in 1999. Roland loved to go fishing, hunting and enjoyed bowling. His favorite companion was Red his faithful dog. He was a mentor and friend to numerous young men and inspired many to go on missions and taught them how to fish. Surviving are his three brothers and one brother-in-law, Charles L. (Mary Jo) Jeppesen and Arland P. (Sandra) Jeppesen both of Brigham City; Robert O. Jeppesen of Logan; Milton Penrod of Smithfield and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Louise Ann Penrod. Smith, Herbert Marshall Herbert Marshall Smith LAYTON - Herbert Marshall Smith, 57, was called home to eternity with his Savior, Jesus Christ, on May 26, 2005 in Savannah, Georgia. He passed away peacefully in his sleep from natural causes. Herb had relocated to Georgia to work for the airplane manufacturer, Gulfstream. He was anxiously waiting for his family to join him there. Herb retired from HAFB in September of 2003, after 38 years as an avionics technician and troubleshooter. He had worked in several states on various aircraft, including the F1-11, the F15 Eagle, the F-16, the A4 and the C130. He loved the field of avionics and was an expert troubleshooter. Herb was born August 20, 1947 in Auburn, California to Alvin and Donna Smith. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. Herb was a disabled veteran who proudly served his country during the Vietnam conflict. He was an avid outdoorsman and very little brought him more joy than sitting on a riverba nk with his family, a fishing pole in one hand and a Dr. Pepper in the other. Herb married Brenda Smith, the love of his life, on March 23, 1972. He is survived by his wife of over 33 years, Brenda, and four children and seven grandchildren. His daughters, Shannon Smith of Riverdale, Stephanie Smith of Layton, Amber Smith of Layton and one son, Brandon Smith of Layton. Six grandsons, Braxton Smith of Brigham City, Andre Quintana of Layton, Skyler Smith of Layton, Andrew Smith of Riverdale, Jesse Smith of South Ogden and Kaeden Smith of Layton. One granddaughter, his Little Princess Taelyn Smith of Layton. He is also survived by three brothers, James Smith of Marysville, CA, Terry Smith of Idaho Falls, ID and Alan Smith of Oroville, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. Herb was a man of integrity that everyone who ever knew him were proud to be called his friend. He will be greatly missed as we hold him in our hearts until we meet again in Heaven. Whitehead, Julie Kay Julie Kay Whitehead Our precious, gentle and loving wife, mother, sister and grandmother was released from the confines of her earthly mission on May 28, 2005. She bravely fought a decades-long battle with various forms of can cer, while never despairing and always uplifting others. In her short mortal existence, she strengthened the lives of all with whom she interacted and the world will be sorely remiss without her. Julie always sees the beauty in this world and marvels at her Heavenly Father's hand in all things, even in the remarkable simplicity of rainstorms and sunsets. Her yard is filled with many flowers, of which she knows every name. She graduated as a Dietitian from Utah State University and interned in California, then worked at McKay-Dee Hospital. On July 29, 1966 she married the love of her life, Richard, for time and eternity in the Logan Temple and they later started an eternal family consisting of: three daughters - Camille (Lorne) Kearl, Trina Whitehead and Cheryl (Brett) Ward; one son - Brandon (Becki) Whitehead and five grandchildren - Stacia, Chance, Brynady, Avrey and Ashlyn at present. As a homemaker, Julie honed a variety of talents for her personal enjoyment and for the benefit of others. Besides teaching others how to garden, cook, quilt, crochet and ride horses, she is also a comforter, guardian, an avid reader and a sage listener, giving the right advice to help others through their trials. Julie is a member of the L.D.S. Church, accepting many callings to serve in the Primary presidency, in Relief Society, as a Primary teacher and as a visiting teacher. Her forte is in playing the piano for Primary and Relief Society. She never missed a Sunday, so the church was always filled with her calming prelude music. She taught her children the importance of responsibility by maintaining a menagerie of animals, including horses, parakeets, fish and her favorite kitty, Glue. She is survived by her husband, children and grandchildren, as well a s her sister Sharon (John) Giles and her brothers Buddy (Kellie) Auble and Jerry Auble. She is preceded in death by her parents Elwin and Doris Auble, aunts, uncles and her beloved grandparents. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 2, 2005 at 11 a.m. at the Spring Canyon L.D.S. Ward (Uintah 5th), 6350 Combe Road, Uintah with Bishop Mark Burton officiating.
