Bauer "Sarge" Wednesday, October 5, 2005 Duane J. Bauer "Sarge", died all too suddenly on Wednesday, September 28, 2005, continuing his walk from this life into the next. Born in Elberta, Utah on September 23, 1921, Duane, after graduating from Payson High, Payson, Utah, class of 1936, two years ahead of schedule, traveled cross-country riding trains, working mines and farms. He always lived the way he deemed necessary. In 1939, he joined a new family, the United States Marine Corps, and for the next 23 years he served honorably. Proud of his accomplishments as a WWII and Korean War Veteran, he retired in January, 1962 as an enlisted man, E8. His life took the fortunate turn into a cafe in Oakland, where he met and eventually married his wife and friend for the next 40 years, Beverly Bauer. They moved to San Lorenzo, and she brought two children into his life that he raised as his own. They had five additions in the next 10 years. The final count was seven and they were known as the Bauer Family. His love and pride for his family were undeniable, his compassion and fortitude toward all, unwavering. Charismatic, he loved his walks, and talks along the way. For 40 plus years he brought San Lorenzo and his new found home in Modesto, a loud and welcome Good Morning! Throughout the years he remained active in the community from PTA, to Little League, HOA and Boy Scouts. He was Mr. San Lorenzo to some, to others he was Sarge, Duane or My. Bauer, but to us he was simply Dad and still to others he was the Old Bald Guy you seen walking everywhere. His character is unforgettable, a Jack of all trades, yet he mastered the respect and admiration of all that knew him. He is one of the last strong stoic men of his era. He is survived by his brother, Lauren "Gene" Bauer of Elberta, Utah, and his sister Mary Aimes of Westminster, CA. He leaves behind his loving children, Jim Bauer of Modesto, Lance Bauer of San Lorenzo, Kirt Bauer of Sacramento, Dej Bauer of Modesto, Tye Bauer of Modesto and Duann Vieira of Riverbank. He also is survived by 17 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, all who miss him for a lifetime. He is preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Beverly J. Bauer, his daughter Mary Greening, His sister Doris Bauer and brother Gale Bauer. Visitation for Duane will be on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. At Grissom's Chapel & Mortuary, 267 E. Lewelling Blvd., San Lorenzo. Funeral services will begin that evening at 7 p.m. at the chapel. Interment will be private. She was a sideline cheerleader at all of the boys little league football games. The mom that always said you did a great job when the girls played softball and LOST. She supported her children by being a member of the PTA, Room Mother and St. Joseph's Booster Club. If there is one thing we can say about our mother is that she NEVER missed one of our games. She was our biggest fan. If you knew Jeri you loved her. She had a heart of pure gold and she was a walking angel. She loved her 12 grandchildren. They were the light of her eye. She bragged about them to her friends. So much so they knew them without even meeting them. She enjoyed their sporting events, school programs, playing school with them or just watching cartoons.
