He was fighting until the end. John was born July 10, 1935, in Ogden, Utah to John Dunning Church Sr. and Ella Lund Church. He and his family moved to Imlay, Nevada in 1936. Some of his fondest childhood memories were in Imlay. They moved back to Ogden in 1945. He attended Mount Ford Jr High, Ogden High and Weber State. John joined the Navy at age 17 and served in the Navy from 1952-1956 during the Korean War. In 1956 he married Pauline Shelton. They had five children. They were later divorced. In 1990, he married Angie Church. They were later divorced. For many years, he worked for Slot Brothers Produce. The Slot's were more a family to him than an employer. He worked for Western Cattle, Meads Health Shoes, and for Jack B Parsons for 25 years. During these years, he met many dear friends. John coached hockey for years where he developed many life long friendships including his friendship with his loyal friend, Steve Barney. John was an honest and caring friend with a great sense of humor and loved by all that met him. He was called Uncle John or Grandpa by every child he met. With his quick wit and happy go lucky attitude, he made friends everywhere. John was a member of the American Legion, the Eagles, and the VFW. John loved to camp and fish, a passion he learned from his father and passed on to his children and grandchildren. His children and grandchildren were his greatest treasures in life. He loved to cook and make special treats for all. He is survived by his children, (Joe) and Laura South, (Tom) and Lynda Duncan, John and (Karen) Church, Kenny and (JoLynn) Church, and Casey and (Boni) Church. 23 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, two sisters Delbert and Charliot Williams and George and Joyce Haywood and many nephews and nieces. Special thanks to Vista Care, especially Cynthia for her astounding support. Funeral Services will be held October 6, 2005 at 11 a.m. at Leavitt"s Mortuary 836 36th St Ogden, Utah. A viewing will be held on October 5, 2005 from 6-8 p.m. and 1 hour prior to service. Immediately following service will be held a Celebration of his life at the VFW 907 West 12th street, Ogden, Utah. John had requested to be cremated and then taken to all of his favorite fishing holes. You will be missed, Dad. You were the best catch of all. Scott Sneddon Thursday, October 6, 2005 PLEASANT VIEW - Scott Sneddon, former Mayor of Ogden and our beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away peacefully at home in the presence of his wife and family on Sunday, October 2, 2005 after a courageous battle with cancer. Scott was a life long resident of the Ogden area, living the last 10 years in Pleasant View. Scott was born January 9, 1940 to Russell Clyde Scott Sneddon and AnnaBelle Longstroth in Ogden, UT. He graduated from Ogden High school in 1958 and received a Football Scholarship to Weber State University. He received his Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Health, Physical Education and Recreation from Weber State University and the University of Utah respectively. Post graduate work was completed at Utah State University. On August 20, 1959 he married his high school sweetheart, Katherine Marie Dixon, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple for time and all eternity. They were blessed with four wonderful children: John S. (Lorraine) Sneddon - Houston, TX, Brian M. (Cheryl) Sneddon No. Ogden, UT, Lisa M. (Casey) Trujillo Riverdale, UT, Jennifer L. (Evan) Granucci - Castaic, CA; 13 grandchildren and one Chinese granddaughter, Bei Aixinjueluo. He loved sports and as a youth he participated in the AAU & Golden Glove Amateur Boxing. Trained by his father, he and his brothers, Tim and Russ, won many championships. A passion for playing football and baseball carried him through his high school years and led him to a successful career in coaching youth sports including football, baseball, basketball, swimming, golf and tennis. He was also a certified sailing instructor as well as a water safety instructor (WSI). He was also an outdoorsman and loved hunting and fishing. As an educator, Scott taught children of all ages in the Ogden School District for over 30 years. Following his retirement from teaching, he worked as the Business and Community Liaison for the Clearfield Job Corps for five years. He was an active member of Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, Chairman of the Northern Utah Correctional Advisory Council. He was selected by the Governor to serve on the Board of Directors for Utah Senior Games. As a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints, he served in many leadership callings including Ward Clerk, High Counselor and Bishop of the Ogden 27th Ward. He had a strong testimony of the Church and his belief in love and charity for those less fortunate was obvious to those around him. The greatest among them, let him be their servant. Scott's love for people and community prompted his desire to seek an elected office. He successfully served as an Ogden City Councilman for 12 years and one term as the Mayor of Ogden. He was a man of vision. His duties included being appointed as the State Coordinator for Sister Cities International. His zest for life was contagious and his sense of adventure took him around the world. Scott initiated and developed Ogden's annual Hof Winterfest, which became northern Utah's premier winter family event. The Hof Winterfest was attended and enjoyed by several thousand local people and friends from Germany each January. His love for Germany and its people inspired him to create a cultural and sports exchange program that led to countless friendships. Because of Scott's dedication, he was the first non-German to receive the Hof Medal of Honor for his international exchange program. His entire life was dedicated to serving people. He lived great, he died great. The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Vincent Hansen and his staff for their devoted care of Scott during his battle with cancer. Also surviving are two brothers and three sisters, Russell Clyde (Nita) Sneddon, Jr., Tim Larry Paul (Jeanne) Sneddon, Donna (Verne) Evans, Linda (Gill) Mullen and Annabelle (Randy) Prisbrey. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Pleasant View 10th Ward Chapel, 3602 North 500 West, with Bishop Mel Marker officiating. Marjorie J. Seeger "Sissie" Thursday, October 6, 2005 SALT LAKE CITY - Marjorie J. Seeger "Sissie", 83, died Saturday, October 1, 2005 in Salt Lake City. She was born December 26, 1921 in Ogden, a daughter of Kenneth and Neva Rutledge Jacobsen. On June 6, 1943, Sissie married Fred C. Becker in Lawton, Oklahoma. He died January 30, 1954. She married G. Paul Seeger on May 7, 1955 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He preceded her in death on June 17, 1988. She was raised and educated in Ogden where she resided until her family moved to Mt. Isa, Australia in 1928. She resided there with her family until 1935 when she returned to Ogden. She graduated from Ogden High School and attended the University of Utah. She earned a Master's Degree of Librarianship from Denver University. Sissie was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Ogden and the Church of the Master in Mesa, Arizona. She helped consolidate the Weber County Library System. She was the President of the Weber County Library Board. She helped to initiate the Bookmobile and began the "Friends of the Library". She also began the patient libraries at St. Benedict's and McKay-Dee Hospitals. She was proud of the fact that she visited many libraries around the world. She was employed at McKay-Dee Hospital as a medical librarian for 12 years. Sissie enjoyed braiding rugs, needlework, and hosting holiday cookie parties. She always enjoyed fostering her many friendships and had a lifelong interest in volunteer work. Surviving are three sons and two daughters, Kurt Becker and Albert (Holly) Becker, both of New Meadows, ID; Tony Seeger, and Karen (Mike) Edson, both of Salt Lake City; Frieda Becker, Alaska; 14 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers. P receding Sissie in death were her husbands and three sons, Darryl, Bill and Kent Seeger. The family would like to thank Care Source Hospice for the love and assistance given to Sissie. Parley Lynn Hemming Thursday, October 6, 2005 Parley Lynn Hemming, 84, a former resident of Thayne, Wyoming and Layton, Utah died Tuesday, October 4, 2005 at the Lakeview Hospital in Bountiful, Utah of injuries sustained in an accidental fall. He was born June 13, 1921, in Rexburg, Idaho, to Parley and Jeneve Hemming. On June 8, 1945 he married Vernetta Clark in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She died December 7, 1992. They raised their family in Blackfoot, Idaho where Parley was employed as a bank officer for Idaho Bank and Trust. Parley served in the United States Navy during World War II as a chief machinist mate in the South Pacific. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He and his wife fulfilled a mission to Nauvoo, Illinois and served as temple ordinance workers in the Idaho Falls, Idaho Temple. After retiring, Parley moved to his summer home in Thayne, Wyoming where he was a member of the Thayne First Ward. He had many good friends living on the Star Valley Ranch and enjoyed playing cards and golfing with his buddies. Additional hobbies included: working with wood, fishing, bowling, and traveling. During their married life, he and Vernetta traveled all over the world with Vernetta's brothers, sisters, and their spouses. Parley is survived by his son and daughter and their families: Dr. and Mrs. Bruce (Caroline) Hemming of Manchester, Missouri and Dr. and Mrs. Craig (Rita) Coombs of Layton, Utah; two brothers John (Cleda) Hemming, St. George, Utah; and Calvin Hemming of Tacoma, Washington; and three sisters: Sylvia Bellairs, Idaho Falls, Idaho; Genevie Puckett, Pocatello, Idaho; and Mary (Wally) Cook of Vancouver, Washington. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren who all loved him dearly. Irene Leak Schmidt Thursday, October 6, 2005 OGDEN - Irene Leak Schmidt, 86, passed away Monday, October 3, 2005, at her home surrounded by her family. She was born October 7, 1918 in West Jordan, Utah to Esther Pearson and William J. Leak. She was raised on the family farm with her three brothers and two sisters. She graduated from Jordan High School and Brigham Young University with a teacher's certificate. She married Herbert W. Schmidt on June 4, 1940 in Provo, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Irene was a very reserved person who devoted her life to her family. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and attended the old Ogden 44th Ward for almost 50 years. She excelled in the homemaking arts. She received state fair blue ribbons for her hand work. She also loved to work in her yard and enjoyed her flowers, her raspberries, and her vegetables. She enjoyed camping and hiking and was always the first one to the top of Mt. Baldy on our hikes in the Uinta Mountains. She was an avid reader of mysteries, poetry, and non-fiction, stopping only to watch the Utah Jazz. In recent years she traveled throughout Europe with members of her family and made annual trips to Las Vegas with her daughters to buy shoes. Irene is survived by three daughters, Pam (Bob) Ray, Susanville, CA; Janet Snyder, Ogden; Kathryn (Paul) Pitcher, Ogden; a son, Greg (Linda) Schmidt, Ogden; 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren with another on the way; a sister, Ramona Rasmussen, Draper, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband and a son, H. Kay Schmidt and by three brothers, Kenneth, Lawrence, and John Leak, and one sister, Ruby Smith. Turner Thursday, October 6, 2005 RIVERDALE - Lisa Alexis Turner, our angel from Heaven, returned home on Sunday, October 2, 2005, following a courageous battle from tumors caused by Tuberous Sclerosis. She was born December 18, 1986 in Oceanside, California, a daughter of Levi and Kathleen Turner. Lisa was raised and educated in Riverdale and graduated from Bonneville High School, May 2005. She was of Christian Faith and attended Washington Heights Baptist Church. Lisa enjoyed swimming, talking on her cell phone, listening to music and hanging out with her friends. Lisa was a special gift from God. She loved everyone she met. She was always happy and full of such joy. Once you met her your life would never be the same. We will miss her beautiful smile and the sparkle in her eyes. She will be in our hearts forever. Surviving are her mother Kathleen Turner and her "Bonus Dad" Randy Kippen, her grandmother Walburga Furey, brother Matthew and sister, Kelli, her aunts Maureen (Robert), Jean, Margaret (Doug), Karen (Mark), Patti, and Ellen (Serge), Uncle Shawn and "Bonus Brother and Sister" J.C. and Christeena", and many loved cousins. Also surviving are special family friends Carol, Cassie and Darci Hyer. Lisa was preceded in death by her father Levi Turner, grandparents Patsy and George Dingler, and Robert Furey, and her cousin Joshua. She was born May 17, 1944 in Salt Lake City to Robina Afton and Calvin Earl Mortensen. She was educated in Ogden and was a graduate of Weber State College. She worked as an Allied Award Manager for Hill Air Force Base. Carol enjoyed singing and was a member of the Salt Lake Symphonic Choir. She enjoyed playing the piano and organ. She also liked decorating cakes and spending time with her grandchildren. She was an active member of the LDS Riverdale 1st Ward. She is survived by her mother, Afton Scott of Roy, UT, daughters, Diana Sargent of Gilbert, AZ, Cyndi Adrian of Modesto, CA, one brother, Gordon Mortensen of Mountain View, CA, three stepbrothers and 10 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, Calvin Earl Mortensen, and stepfather Cleo Scott. Born April 9, 1923 in Ogden, Utah to Alfred Farnum and Luella Ruth Rigby Calton. He married Lorna May Broadbent November 17, 1942 in the Logan LDS Temple. Reed is survived by two sisters, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne (Bonnie) Hoopes, Twin Falls, ID; and Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd (Louise) Adamson, Brigham City, UT; five children, Mr. and Mrs. Collin (Reena) Price, West Jordan, UT; Mr. and Mrs. Wayne (Janice) Johnson, Corinne, UT; Peggy Varney, Layton, UT; Mr. and Mrs. Larry (Debra) McAtee, Clinton, UT; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Calton, West Point, UT; 19 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. Ruth Pulsipher Nelson Thursday, October 6, 2005 1922 - 2005 MANTUA - Ruth Pulsipher Nelson died October 2, 2005 peacefully at her home after a short illness. She was born December 12, 1922, to Wallace Wight Pulsipher and Amelia LaBlanche Mortensen in Brigham City, Utah. Moved to Mantua, Utah, in 1936, and spent most of the rest of her life there. Attended schools in Brigham City and graduated from Box Elder High School in 1941. Married Orion LeRoy (Mick) Nelson on December 12, 1941, in the Salt Lake Temple. She retired from the Box Elder school lunch program. She was a devoted member of the LDS church. She served a mission in Arizona Phoenix Mission with her husband in 1986- 87. In 1995, after the death of her husband, she served as an ordinance worker in the Ogden Temple. She is survived by children O. LeRoy Nelson, Ogden; Vicki (Grant) Johnson, Lehi; Kathy (Dennis) White, North Ogden; and Diane (Richard) Johnson, West Jordan; Eleven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren; two sisters, Sylvia P. Knight of Mantua; and Marian (Robert) Hope of Brigham City; and a sister- in-law, Verle Nelson Andersen of Brigham City. Connor is survived by his parents; two sisters, Brittlynn (8), Andrea (4), two brothers, Brandon (5), and Andrew (23 months), all of Roy; his grandparents, Britt Yoder, Roy; Janet Brown, Oklahoma; Harold and Karen Shaw, Ogden; and Bob and Carol Lord, Salt Lake City. Robert L. Strong Thursday, October 6, 2005 Robert E. Lee (Bob) Strong, age 81, passed peacefully away Oct. 4; surrounded by his wife of 57 years, Carolyn C. Petty, and all of his eight children. Born March 4, 1924, the first child of Ervin G. Strong and Vera Kenner. Bob grew up in Logan and later Ogden, before over 40 years in Springville. Funeral services will be held at the Hobble Creek West Stake Center in Springville at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7. The service will be preceded by a viewing from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon. Burial will be in the Springville Evergreen Cemetery. Blaine E. Bodily Thursday, October 6, 2005 TOGETHER FOREVER CLEARFIELD - Blaine E. Bodily, 73, our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend, passed away Monday, October 3, 2005 at his home of heart failure surrounded by his loving family. He is now at peace. Dad was born December 9, 1931 to John Edward Bodily and Ethel Elizabeth Hart in Syracuse, Utah. He married his sweetheart, Renae Gailey on January 29, 1953 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Mom passed away on September 30, 2001. Dad was raised in Ogden and lived in Roy and in Clearfield the past 48 years. Dad had a very strong testimony of the gospel and of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints. Dad was a faithful home teacher. He also served with his wife till the time of her passing as missionaries at the Family History Center from 1998 to 2001. Dad was employed at the Naval Supply Depot, Hill A.F.B. and Weber State University. Dad loved his family and enjoyed playing with and teasing his grandchildren. He enjoyed sharing their important occasions and was proud of their accomplishments. His family was his life. He enjoyed helping others. He enjoyed the out-of-doors, bowling and doing things with his hands. He loved little children. Surviving are his two daughters, Gaylene (Ken) Barlow, Mountain Green; and Karen (Duane) Wright, Ogden; 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren with two more on the way. Also surviving are his mother, Ethel Bodily; one brother, Darrel (Goldene) Bodily; one sister, Joyce (Clyde) Howell; one brother-in-law, Royce N. (Kathy) Gailey; two sisters- in-law, Marvetta (Glen) Saunders, and Kathy (James) Painter. Dad was preceded in death by his father, sister and his eternal companion, Renae. Darrell Keith Sorensen Thursday, October 6, 2005 LAYTON - Darrell Keith Sorensen, 70, passed away Sunday, October 2, 2005 while camping and enjoying life to the fullest. To fulfill Darrell's wishes he was taken off life support due to complications from a bee sting. Friends gave him his best chance of survival. Thanks to all who spent time with him during the last days. Darrell was born December 4, 1934 in Ogden, son of Roy M. Sorensen and Ethel Giles. He married Viola LaDean Love on June 6, 1958. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. Darrell served in the Marine Corp and is a veteran of the Korean War. He had been active in the LDS church and was a resident of Layton for 48 years. He enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, 4- wheeling, and his garden was his prize possession. He loved spending time with his wife, grandkids, his many friends, and treasured his dogs. He was known by his mountainman companions as Blender and what a fine shot he was. Surviving are his wife, LaDean, and five children, Cathy (Dan) Grimsley, Edward Sorensen, Mary Ann (Keith) Sargent, Bradley (Tana) Sorensen, Michelle (Lee) Hamblin, nine grandchildren, Scott (Laura) Grimsley, Tyler and Darren Tatton, Jacob Sargent, Bobby, Keith and Ashley Hamblin, Kaleey and Kolton Sorensen. His two sisters, Donna (Hod) Mercer of Newaygo, Michigan; Marlene (Bert) Mezenen of Morgan, UT; and one brother, Merrill (Leah) Sorensen of Ogden, UT. Preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Ethel Sorensen, Elmer and Elaine Love, and one grandson, Derek Grimsley. She was born in Lincoln, Nebraska on June 27, 1922 to Loyette Densmore Hattan. She married Mike Sam Mazza August 27, 1942 in Los Angeles, California. Mike Passed away March 13, 1990. She retired from Hewlett Packard of Escondidio, California. Betty is survived by sons Alex (Gail) of Grand Terrace, CA, Tony (Claudia) of Ogden, Rick (Esther) of Reno, and daughter Maralyn of Ogden, eleven grandchildren 14 great grandchildren and one on the way, and also, close friend and part of the family Marilyn Mazza. She was preceded in death by son, Peter. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 29, 2005 at St. Joseph's Church, 514 24th Street, Ogden, UT. Cremation under the direction of Leavitt's Mortuary Lorraine Clabby Thursday, October 6, 2005 Lorraine Clabby, 75, passed away September 29, 2005 in Salt Lake City. She was born March 25, 1930 in Malad, Idaho to Hugh and Sarah Clark. Married Don Clabby July 22, 1950, later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. She was an active member of the LDS Church. Her greatest joy was her family. She is survived by daughters Kaye (Mick) Skola and Dana Clabby; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren; sisters, Helen Reese, Beth Hawks, Thelma Daniels, Larene Vaughan and Anne Peterson. Preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Anne, brother and five sisters. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday October 8, 2005 at the Mueller Park 4th Ward Chapel, 1320 E. 1975 S., Bountiful. Raymond (Ray) York Thursday, October 6, 2005 OGDEN - Raymond York passed away September 30, 2005 at the Mtn. Ridge Assisted Living in South Ogden. He was born to Louis York and Hermina Schmidt on March 27, 1917 in Saskatchewan, Canada. He was reared and educated in Glidden, Wisconsin. Ray then joined the Army/Air Corp. during WWII. After the war he married Arlene Moulding in Ogden and worked last as a Production Controller at the Defense Depot Ogden until his retirement. Ray was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He tinkered in woodworking, metalwork, and repairs including clock repair. He is survived by his son Robert York (Jane Phillips) and daughter Randy (Edward) Orozco, sister Angeline Weins of Ft. Wayne, IN., four grandchildren, Jill, Jeri, Brandi, Monica and one great grandchild. He is also survived by long time friends Ruth Fleming, Dean Scadden, Joe Widman, Robina Delion, and the many new friends at Mtn. Ridge. Ray was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene, and one brother, Harry York. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, October 7, 2005 at Leavitt's Mortuary, 836 36th Street, Ogden. Viewing will be Thursday, October 6, 2005 from 6 to 8 p.m. and from 1 to 1:45 prior to the services at the mortuary.
