He was born September 9, 1917 in Ogden, Utah, to Maurice and Nettie Russell Morrin. Dean served in the Army during World War II. He graduated from Ogden High in 1935 and from Weber State College in 1938. He attended the University of Utah Law School. On May 17, 1941, Dean married Jane Shurtliff in Randolph, Utah. Dean served on the Board of Directors for Commercial Security Bank which is now Key Bank. He was a member of the Ogden City Civil Service Commission and the Associated General Contractors of America. He was the Director of the Ogden Weber Chamber of Commerce. He was Chairman of the Weber Economic Development Corporation and the Ogden Industrial Development Corporation. He served on the committee for the Eccles Conference Center, on the Board of Directors of the Ogden Country Club and Weber Club and helped establish Mission 2000. He received an Honorary Doctorate of Humanities Degree from Weber State University. Dean and Jane received the Ogden Weber Chamber of Commerce Citizens of the Year Award. Dean was a general contractor and he built many buildings at Utah State University, University of Utah and Weber State University. He built schools for the Ogden City schools and Weber County schools including Weber High school. He built the Bank of Utah, Key Bank and many other buildings. He built dozens of bridges on the interstates in Nevada, Idaho, Montana and all of Northern Utah. He worked on Starvation Dam, Soldier Creek Dam and Naughton Dam in Wyoming. He built the fish hatchery in Orofino, Idaho. He was the general contractor for numerous waste water and water treatment plants. He converted all of the barracks into housing which became the city of Washington Terrace. He enjoyed horseback riding, hunting, fishing, boating, golfing, bowling, spending time at the family cabin and traveling. He loved birthday and holiday gatherings. Dean is survived by his wife, Jane; a son, Richard Dean (Mikki) Morrin, Ogden; four daughters, Suzann (Vern) Carter, Bakersfield, CA; Kathy (Jerry) Opheikens, Ogden; Mary (Pat) Dabling, Ogden; Jill Morrin, Layton; 16 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Janet Nichols and a son, James E. Morrin. Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 8th at 11:00 a.m. at Lindquist's Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd., with Bishop Jim Jensen, officiating. Edna (Eddie) Williams Hoagland Thursday, September 8, 2005 OGDEN - Edna (Eddie) W. Hoagland died Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2005, after a long and happy life, leaving many special, warm friendships and a loved family who will miss her smiles and joyousness. She was a warm and loving friend to everyone. She was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, April 12, 1904, the only daughter of F. Roy Williams and Laura Bullock Williams. She started school in Salt Lake City and later attended Hawthorne Elementary School in San Diego, California, and Sentous Junior High School in Los Angeles, while her father, an Artillery Officer, was stationed at Camp Kearney before going overseas to France in WWI. Later she graduated from East High School in Salt Lake City and the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority and the Chi Delta Phi literary sorority. She was the first Honorary Colonel of the ROTC Regiment at the University, a member of the boosters Cheerleaders Club, Trotters Club, and on the University Utonian yearbook staff. She was married to Melvin R. Hoagland on Oct. 5, 1927 in Salt Lake City. The marriage was later solemnized in the Ogden, Utah LDS Temple. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 1987. He died Aug. 9, 1990, in Ogden. She worked at several jobs and retired as a tax examiner for the IRS. She was a McKay- Dee Hospital volunteer many years retiring when they moved to the new hospital complex. Eddie was a member of the Malan's Peak and Taylor's Canyon LDS Wards. She enjoyed her many church assignments and she loved and related to the young people. She wrote to many missionaries for years and to the last months of her life. She learned to use a computer at 90. This helped her to continue to write missionaries until she was 101 years old. Her membership in Altruist Club, Child Culture, Fi Wo Ca Literary Club, Delta Gammas Sorority, University Alumnae, Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, Camp Wasatch and the Relief Society were special to her and she cherished all the friends she was fortunate to have. She happily celebrated her 100 birthday in April of 2004 with a wonderful week-end of family and friends. She is survived by one son J. Michael Hoagland and wife, Riek, daughter-in-law, Arlene; 9 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents, eldest son, two brothers and their wives. Funeral service will be held Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005, at 11 am in the Larkin & Sons Mortuary, 496 24th St. Ogden, where friends may call Friday, Sept. 9, from 6 to 8 pm and Saturday from 10 to 10:45 am. Interment in the Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, Salt Lake City. Michael F. Huggins Thursday, September 8, 2005 May 20, 1977 was the wondrous day in Cleveland, Ohio that Michael F. Huggins emerged into the world. From early childhood he was fascinated by people, music, and animals. As he grew he developed an uncanny ability to communicate with cats and dogs. He also became adept at composing his own music, first on piano, then keyboard, and onto guitar. He attended school at St. Olafs in Bountiful and Judge Memorial Catholic High School in Salt Lake City, where he graduated in 1995. From there it was onto his hearts desire for a medical career, with studies at Westminster, Salt Lake Community College and finally the U. He was several years into a career as a phlebotomist with ARUP where he excelled at his work and developed strong friendships with his co-workers. Michael was a loving son, always ready and anxious to love and please. He loved to debate any issue and often would talk late into the night with his mother Susan. Even when cancer struck he maintained a super positive attitude toward life and fought courageously until his final breath. Michael is survived by his maternal grandparents George and Ruth Pipes, paternal grandfather Robert, parents Robert and Susan, his life companion Teri Sanders and her parents Dave and Arlee, two uncles and one aunt. Dolores Cortes Hamel Thursday, September 8, 2005 WEST POINT - Dolores Mary Cortes Hamel, 70, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away September 4, 2005 after an extended illness. She was born September 29, 1934 to Mary Ellen Arambarri Smith and John Cortes in Bingham, Utah. Dolores married the love of her life, Fredie S. Hamel on November 17, 1952 in Ogden, Utah and were able to celebrate 50 years of marriage. From this union they had three children, Deborah (Dave) Johnson, Pamela (Robert) Checketts, and Fredie S. Hamel Jr., a special son who his mother is now with; five grandchildren, Marc, Courtney and Steven Rice; and Brandon and April Checketts. Dolores supported her husband Fredie when he joined the Marines in 1951. During his 30 years of proud military service, the family resided in numerous locations across the country until Dolores and Fredie retired in West Point, Utah. Dolores dearly loved and supported her husband, daughters and grandchildren. While residing in Albuquerque, she was employed as a kindergarten teacher and enjoyed being around all children. She had a special place in her heart for the children of St. Jude and those in her West Point neighborhood. Dolores enjoyed her hobbies, was known as a tease, and loved to have fun. She would make sure her children knew where she was sitting during school plays by waiving a white handkerchief. Dolores loved to play games with her family. To her grandchildren she will always be remembered as "granny." Dolores is survived by her two daughters and sons-in law; five grandchildren; one expecting great-grandchild; brothers, John Cortes and Ben (Paul) Smith, Jr.; and stepfather, Ben F. Smith, Sr.; four nieces; two nephews; five great nieces and nine greatnephews. Mom, "granny," we will always love you and miss you. Doris Mae Housley Thursday, September 8, 2005 RIVERDALE - Our mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Doris Mae Wilde Housley, passed away Monday, September 5, 2005 at the age of 89, surrounded by her loving family. She was born May 11, 1916 in Mink Creek, Idaho to Albert and Victoria Wilde. The family moved from Mink Creek to Brigham City, Utah when she was a child. She attended school in Brigham City where her first teacher was her older sister. Doris was married to Reese Housley on September 30, 1936 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They were married for 61 years before Reese's death in 1997. After retirement in 1978, they traveled extensively to most of the states and to Mexico and Canada. Their winters were spent in Yuma, Arizona. Doris's life career was being a homemaker. Her hobbies were reading, quilting and traveling. She dearly loved her grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them. She made many quilts and made sure that each member of the family had at least one of these treasures. She was an excellent cook, specializing in bread and pies. She had a quick wit and a keen sense of humor. She had a deep love for people and was a joy to be around. She was a true friend. Doris was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints, faithfully filling various callings throughout her life. She is survived by two sons and three daughters, Reese C. (Shirlee) Housley, Kevin (Lorri) Housley, Sharon Hendrickson, Nila (Thomas) Butterfield, and Vickie (Dave) Lesley; 18 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, eight greatgreat- grandchildren, and one sister, Beth Meacham, Elsinore Mountain, CA. Clarence "Clix" Mitchell Thursday, September 8, 2005 Together Again BRIGHAM CITY/ CLINTON - Clarence Samuel Mitchell, 90, of Brigham City, formerly of Clinton passed away Tuesday, September 6, 2005 at his home. He was born March 10, 1915 to Joseph Clements and Edith Sarah Burnett Mitchell in Clinton, Utah. He married Bernice Duncan December 9, 1936 in the Salt Lake He worked as an automobile mechanic for 50 years: 26 at Sunset Garage in Sunset and 24 years as an owner of Mitchell Bros Repair in Clinton, retiring in 1986. He and his wife Bernice lived in Clinton until 1999 at which time they moved to Brigham City. Bernice passed away in 2002. He has held several church callings including secretary of the ward high priest group and home teacher. His hobbies included gardening, fishing, hunting and Solitaire. He was an accomplished gardener and received a beautification award from the city of Clinton in 1999. He generously shared his produce with family and friends. Surviving are his children and spouses: Ronald Bill (Arlene) Mitchell of Brigham City; Nancy (Elden Mick) Spencer, and Marie (Brent) Gardner, both of Syracuse; 15 grandchildren and 41 greatgrandchildren with more on the way. His first great-great-granddaughter is expected later this month. Also surviving are his brother, LeRoy Mitchell of Marriott- Slaterville and sister, Zella Flinders of Clearfield. Noe, 95, passed away Tuesday, September 6, 2005 at Greenwood Manor in Lehi, Utah, of natural causes. She was born January 5, 1910 in Provo Canyon, Utah, the daughter of Andrew Wallace and Mary Alice Peterson Larson. E thel married Leroy Oren "Jim" Hadlock on November 26, 1930 in Provo, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He died December 19, 1954 in Ogden, Utah. She married George Walker Noe on January 16, 1961, in the Salt Lake Temple. He died December 23, 1993 in Ogden, Utah. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as a Relief Society President three times. She also served as a Primary Teacher and Visiting Teacher. Ethel had been employed at Clifton's Dress Shop and later worked for Dr.'s Frank and Jay Bartlett, and Fred Mathies. She also worked for Dr. Wayne Pack. Surviving are one daughter, Karleen H. Bechtel, Eagle Mountain, UT; one son, Dean L. (Myrtle) Hadlock, Ogden, UT; a granddaughter, Kara Bechtel Badger, whom she helped raise as a child, 15 additional grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Ethel is also survived by one sister, Elaine Beer, American Fork, UT; two stepdaughters, Anna Mae Rasmussen, Ogden, UT; and Ruth Hulet, Bountiful, UT; and one stepson, Dean T. (Carol) Noe, Ogden, UT. Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, husbands, two great-great-grandchildren, and one son-in-law. Larkin, 64, passed away Sunday, August 28 in Las Vegas. Verl and his twin brother Merl were born June 20, 1941 in Ogden to Joseph Merlin and Iola Sherratt Larkin. Verl was raised in Ogden, Utah and graduated from Weber High School. He is survived by his wife, Billie Jo Larkin of Mesquite; a daughter, Tammy (Kerry) Suess; three sons, Terry (Ramona) Larkin; Earl (Sharon) Larkin; and Mitch (Karen) Larkin; a stepson Patrick (Keli) Perkins; a stepdaughter Kim Perkins; 15 grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren. Verl is also survived by four brothers, Frank (Gusti) Larkin; Bob (LaVerne) Larkin; Merl (Carol) Larkin; and Kenneth (Helena) Larkin; two sisters, Naomi (John) MacArthur and Nancy (Paul) McKay. Verneice Braegger Thursday, September 8, 2005 WILLARD - Verneice Woodland Hansen Braegger, 96, passed away on Tuesday, September 6, 2005. Verneice was born in Brigham City, Utah on September 28, 1908 a daughter of Isaac and Martha Ann Barker Woodland. She married Anton Christen Hansen, he later died in 1931. Verneice then married Charles Ulrich Braegger in 1933, he died in 1983. She was an active member of the Chruch of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints, where she had served in many callings. Verneice was well known for her tatting, crocheting, knitting, quilting and other hand work. Surviving are her children, Ray (Lois) Hansen, Willard, UT; Gary (Patty) Braegger, San Diego, CA; 13 grandchildren and 51 great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, and a daughter, Patricia Sturdy. Dolores Cecilia Tidwell Davis Thursday, September 8, 2005 OGDEN - Delores Cecilia Tidwell Davis, 70, passed away on Sept. 6, 2005 after a short illness. She was born on May 18, 1935 in Logan, Utah to Roy Edwin Tidwell and Ruth Elaine Cawley. She married Val George Davis on Sept. 27, 1952 in Ogden, Utah. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She is survived by one son and two daughters, Robert Lynn Davis Angela (Patrick) Tehero and Janette Kay Davis. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Dolores was preceded in death by her husband, parents and one nephew. He was born March 30, 1943 in Maryland. He married Tina Gettings on August 14, 2000. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005 at Aarons Mortuary & Crematory, 1600 Washington Blvd. from 1 to 3 p.m. Edith Evelyn Larson Thursday, September 8, 2005 Edith Evelyn Larson passed away Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2005 at her home in Ogden, UT. Her death was much like her life; sweet, quiet and gentle. She was 90 years old. She is survived by her two sons, Raymond Wayne Larson and Richard Charles Larson, both of Claremore, OK, and her daughter, Candace Crane of Morgan. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Evelyn was born in Philadelphia, PA Oct. 5, 1914. Her parents moved to Southern California when she was a small child, and it was there that she lived most of her life. She married her late husband, Wayne Larson, April 9, 1938. They raised their children in Long Beach. Evelyn was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints during those years. Their marriage was sealed for eternity Oct. 13, 1987 in the Dallas, TX Temple. Also preceding Evelyn in death were her beloved brother, Charles Roland Carlson of Long Beach and Raymond Carlson, who died in infancy. Evelyn was the personification of "good natured," and was loved by all who were privileged to know her. She was ever grateful for the smallest kindnesses done for her, and was the doer of many kindnesses for others. She was sweet, good-humored and uncomplaining about the health problems brought on by her advanced age. Her fervent wish was to die quietly at home without burdening anyone. And God in his mercy granted her that blessing. She will be mourned and missed by all who knew her. Her funeral will be conducted at the LDS meeting house in Morgan at the intersection of State and Young Streets at noon Friday, Sept. 9, 2005, with a viewing beginning at 10:00 a.m. Vance Kevin Lightfoot Thursday, September 8, 2005 CLINTON - Vance Kevin Lightfoot passed away peacefully at his Clinton home Monday, September 5, 2005 following complications from a motorcycle accident. He was born March 14, 1957 to Thomas E. and Eulalie Neville Lightfoot. He grew up in Sunset, Utah and graduated from Clearfield High School in 1975. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served in the Brussels, Belgium Mission. He was married September 14, 1978 to Julie Read Lightfoot. The marriage was solemnized one year later in the Logan temple. They were later divorced but remained good friends. Vance worked in telecommunications for the Davis County School District. In the past, he had also owned and operated his own business, Advance Wire and Telephone. He served in various church callings including scouting and young mens. Vance had a love for music, especially classic rock. He loved riding his motorcycle and going on road trips. His kindness and his great sense of humor will be truly missed. Vance loved his family, his children, and loved being a grandpa to his grandchildren, Eli, Grace and Lincoln. He is survived by his children, Katie Simpson (Joe), Washington Terrace; Kristopher Vance Lightfoot (Stacy), Syracuse; and Keith Emerson Lightfoot, Riverdale. He is also survived by his parents, Thomas and Eulalie Lightfoot (Layton), and his siblings, Vicki Lucas (Alan), Ephraim; Kiele Nelson (Kevin), South Ogden; Kenna Garrett (Phil), Kaysville; survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by half-sister Chrystine Lightfoot; nephew Mitch Nelson; and grandson Eli Simpson. Nelson Thursday, September 8, 2005 OGDEN - Ruth Handy Nelson, 87, died Tuesday, September 6, 2005 at a local care center of causes incident to age. She was born August 11, 1918 in Franklin, Idaho a daughter of Elmer Day and Mary "Mae" Zilphia Biggs Handy. She was raised and educated in Franklin, graduating from Franklin High School. On October 8, 1937, Ruth married Lloyd W. Nelson in the Logan LDS Temple. Lloyd died May 2, 1985. She had lived in Roy, Slaterville, Clinton, Willard, and in Ogden for the past 20 years. Ruth was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints. She worked as a sales clerk for J.C. Penney and L.R. Samuels. She also worked at Defense Depot Ogden and Hill Air Force Base as a tool distributor. Ruth's hobby was shopping. Surviving are two sons and one daughter, Ferrin LaMont (Shirley) Nelson, Marriott/Slaterville; Lee Handy (Margene) Nelson, and Roxane Pappas, both of Ogden; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one brother, Dean (June) Handy, Preston, ID. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, one sister, Blanche Kingsford and one granddaughter, Heidi.
