Vera Garner Stoker Friday, September 9, 2005 SYRACUSE - Vera Garner Stoker, 68, passed away Thursday, September 8, 2005 at the Legacy House in Logan Utah. She was born July 11, 1937 in Ogden, Utah, the daughter of George Edwin and Gladys Simpson Garner. She married Dee Floyd Stoker, April 2, 1956 in Evanston, Wyoming; the marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple February 22, 1968. Dee passed away April 4, 1986. Vera was member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints and was actively engaged in the Relief Society and other auxiliaries. She served two LDS missions; was an ordinance worker in the Ogden Temple and a volunteer worker at the Bishop's storehouse. Surviving are four daughters, Dalone Orozco, So. Ogden; Joanie Stoker, Syracuse; Laurie (Drew) Parker, Wellsville; and Shari (Casey) King, Syracuse; three brothers, George Garner, Uintah; Paul Garner, Tremonton; James Garner, Hooper; three sisters, Lela Cottam, Hooper; Mary Lou Hancock, West Weber; and Lois Smith, Mesquite, NV. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, five brothers and a sister. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, September 12, 2005 at the Syracuse 4th Ward, 1625 South 1100 West. LaFeber Friday, September 9, 2005 OGDEN - Our husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Arthur Benjamin LaFeber, passed away Wednesday, September 7, 2005 surrounded by his loving family. He was born January 9, 1920 in Denver, Colorado, to Claudio and Eva LaFeber. Art married Mildred Fowler on October 5, 1945 in Salt Lake City and they would have celebrated 60 years of marriage. He graduated from Manuel High School in Denver, Colorado where he was Captain of the Varsity Baseball Team and Track Team. Following graduation he played semi-professional baseball with the New York Yankees. Art was a veteran of World War II in the Army Air Corp and served under General McArthur in the South Pacific. He worked at Salt Lake Printers, InLand Printing in Kaysville, and retired from the Ogden Standard Examiner where he worked as a linotype operator. Dad will always be remembered for the devotion and support of his children. His greatest love was attending the many activities of his family. He thoroughly enjoyed taking his family camping and fishing and most of all, riding his motorcycle. Surviving are his loving wife, three sons, Arthur B. LaFeber, Jr., Bountiful; Rich (Jill) LaFeber, Roy; Roger LaFeber and David Meeks, Salt Lake City; two daughters, Rosalyn (Craig) Farnsworth, North Ogden; Becky (Jim) Cottrell, WV; 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, all whom adored him; and a special friend, Lise Cappaert. Chitty, 77, passed away in Tehachapi on September 1, 2005. Myrna had moved here only two years ago from the Napa area where she had lived for almost 25 years. Myrna was born to Clarence and Madeline McLatchie on April 15, 1928 in Ogden, Utah. Professionally Myrna was a well-respected executive secretary at the Napa State Hospital for 20 years. She was also a talented oil painter and especially enjoyed the beautiful Napa Valley where she lived. She was a lady of strong faith, a member of L.D.S. Church in St. Helena. She will be long remembered as a devoted mother and grandmother. Myrna is survived by her sons, Bruce Chitty and his wife Dena of Bear Valley Springs and Garth Chitty of Tuscon, AZ; daughter, Laruel Emminger of San Anselmo; three grandchildren, and brother, Eldon McLatchie of Ogden. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Fay Canova and Carol Jones. Joan was born on September 22, 1940 to Stanley and Mildred Swanke in Coeur d'Alene, ID. She was a graduate of Weber State College. She married Dale S Sant on December 28, 1960. Surviving is her loving husband, Dale S. Sant; her children, son Richard D, wife Teresa Sant; daughters Anne M Sant, Debbie S. and husband Steve M Uribe. Cremation under the direction of Myers Mortuary in Ogden. Edna (Eddie) Williams Hoagland Friday, September 9, 2005 OGDEN - Edna (Eddie) W. Hoagland died Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2005, after a long and happy life, leaving many special, warm friendships and a loved family who will miss her smiles and joyousness. She was a warm and loving friend to everyone. She was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, April 12, 1904, the only daughter of F. Roy Williams and Laura Bullock Williams. She started school in Salt Lake City and later attended Hawthorne Elementary School in San Diego, California, and Sentous Junior High School in Los Angeles, while her father, an Artillery Officer, was stationed at Camp Kearney before going overseas to France in WWI. Later she graduated from East High School in Salt Lake City and the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority and the Chi Delta Phi literary sorority. She was the first Honorary Colonel of the ROTC Regiment at the University, a member of the boosters Cheerleaders Club, Trotters Club, and on the University Utonian yearbook staff. She was married to Melvin R. Hoagland on Oct. 5, 1927 in Salt Lake City. The marriage was later solemnized in the Ogden, Utah LDS Temple. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 1987. He died Aug. 9, 1990, in Ogden. She worked at several jobs and retired as a tax examiner for the IRS. She was a McKay-Dee Hospital volunteer many years retiring when they moved to the new hospital complex. Eddie was a member of the Malan's Peak and Taylor's Canyon LDS Wards. She enjoyed her many church assignments and she loved and related to the young people. She wrote to many missionaries for years and to the last months of her life. She learned to use a computer at 90. This helped her to continue to write missionaries until she was 101 years old. Her membership in Altruist Club, Child Culture, Fi Wo Ca Literary Club, Delta Gammas Sorority, University Alumnae, Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, Camp Wasatch and the Relief Society were special to her and she cherished all the friends she was fortunate to have. She happily celebrated her 100 birthday in April of 2004 with a wonderful week-end of family and friends. She is survived by one son J. Michael Hoagland and wife, Riek, daughter-in-law, Arlene; 9 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents, eldest son, two brothers and their wives. Nelson Friday, September 9, 2005 OGDEN - Ruth Handy Nelson, 87, died Tuesday, September 6, 2005 at a local care center of causes incident to age. She was born August 11, 1918 in Franklin, Idaho a daughter of Elmer Day and Mary "Mae" Zilphia Biggs Handy. She was raised and educated in Franklin, graduating from Franklin High School. On October 8, 1937, Ruth married Lloyd W. Nelson in the Logan LDS Temple. Lloyd died May 2, 1985. She had lived in Roy, Slaterville, Clinton, Willard, and in Ogden for the past 20 years. Ruth was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints. She worked as a sales clerk for J.C. Penney and L.R. Samuels. She also worked at Defense Depot Ogden and Hill Air Force Base as a tool distributor. Ruth's hobby was shopping. Surviving are two sons and one daughter, Ferrin LaMont (Shirley) Nelson, Marriott/Slaterville; Lee Handy (Margene) Nelson, and Roxane Pappas, both of Ogden; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one brother, Dean (June) Handy, Preston, ID. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, one sister, Blanche Kingsford and one granddaughter, Heidi. Noe, 95, passed away Tuesday, September 6, 2005 at Greenwood Manor in Lehi, Utah, of natural causes. She was born January 5, 1910 in Provo Canyon, Utah, the daughter of Andrew Wallace and Mary Alice Peterson Larson. E thel married Leroy Oren "Jim" Hadlock on November 26, 1930 in Provo, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He died December 19, 1954 in Ogden, Utah. She married George Walker Noe on January 16, 1961, in the Salt Lake Temple. He died December 23, 1993 in Ogden, Utah. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as a Relief Society President three times. She also served as a Primary Teacher and Visiting Teacher. Ethel had been employed at Clifton's Dress Shop and later worked for Dr.'s Frank and Jay Bartlett, and Fred Mathies. She also worked for Dr. Wayne Pack. Surviving are one daughter, Karleen H. Bechtel, Eagle Mountain, UT; one son, Dean L. (Myrtle) Hadlock, Ogden, UT; a granddaughter, Kara Bechtel Badger, whom she helped raise as a child, 15 additional grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Ethel is also survived by one sister, Elaine Beer, American Fork, UT; two stepdaughters, Anna Mae Rasmussen, Ogden, UT; and Ruth Hulet, Bountiful, UT; and one stepson, Dean T. (Carol) Noe, Ogden, UT. Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, husbands, two great-great-grandchildren, and one son-in-law. The family wishes to thank all of those who cared for mother during her short illness. Bryce Vernon Roper Friday, September 9, 2005 POCATELLO, Idaho - Bryce Vernon Roper, 80, of Pocatello passed away September 6, 2005 at home of natural causes. Bryce was born August 24, 1925 in Presho, South Dakota to Vernon Victor and Vera Mabel Ginther Roper. Bryce received his early education in South Dakota. Bryce was very patriotic and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943 to serve in World War II. He served as Secretary to a Rear Admiral in San Diego until his honorable discharge in 1946. Bryce enrolled in Weber State College in Ogden, Utah and after graduation from Weber, went on to study Business at the University of Utah. While at Weber State, Bryce met June LaRae Herrick and they were married on December 28, 1949 in Ogden, Utah. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple in October 16, 1952. June passed away on August 26, 1999. Bryce worked for the railroad for over 40 years. At the time of his retirement in 1983, he was Superintendent for the Union Pacific Fruit Express. Bryce was an active member of the Pocatello Rotary Club for many years. He served as President from 1979 - 1980, as District Governor of District 540 from 1981 - 1982, and as Secretary of the Pocatello Rotary Club from 1984 - 2000. Bryce was passionate about the Paul Harris Fellow program which provides college scholarships and study-abroad programs. He insured that most of his family members were Paul Harris Fellows. It was a source of pride that his only grandson, Scott Roper Burrup, was named as a Paul Harris Fellow while still an infant. Bryce was a founding board member of the United States Golfing Fellowship of Rotary and traveled around the world to attend tournaments and events for the International Golfing Fellowship of Rotary as well. Bryce was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints. He served in many callings including High Priests Group Leader, Sunday School President, Counselor in a Bishopric, Ward Clerk, Stake Clerk and Home Teacher. He was a good neighbor and always thoughtful of others. Bryce was an avid golfer and enjoyed every minute he spent on a golf course with his golfing buddies. He was a long-time member of the Juniper Hills Country Club. Bryce married Bonnie Lee Schafer Shane on November 11, 2000 in Idaho Falls and they enjoyed almost five wonderful years together. Bryce is survived by his wife, Bonnie; brother Wesley W. Roper of Rochester, WA, a sister-in-law, Mary Lou Roper of Placentia, CA; daughter, Sally (Roger) Burrup of Little Rock, Arkansas; grandson, Scott R. Burrup who is attending BYU in Provo, UT; Bonnie's children Peggy (Ron) Summers of Idaho Falls; Carol (David) Arnold of Medway, Ohio; Michael Shane of Idaho Falls; and Mary (Mike) Peterson of Klamath Falls, OR. Also surviving are Bonnie's 13 grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren. Bryce was preceded in death by his brothers Wendell who died as an infant, Harold, and Dorn, his first wife, June and his daughter, Susan Stirling who passed away in April of this year. Fernando Ceja Friday, September 9, 2005 OGDEN - Fernando Javier , 2 years old, passed away Monday, September 5, 2005 in Las Vegas from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Fernando was born August 24, 2003 in Ogden to Evelyn Marina Castro and Fernando Ceja Mendoza. Fernando was a little dancer and was very mischievous. He loved to play with his brother, sister and cousins. When you gave him a candy, he always asked for one for his brother. He was a happy and beautiful little boy who loved being with his family. Surviving are his mother, Evelyn Castro of Ogden; father, Fernando Ceja of Ogden; grandmothers, Margarita Garcia of El Salvador; Consuelo Mendosa of Mexico; and grandfather, Dionicio Castro of California. Vance Kevin Lightfoot Friday, September 9, 2005 CLINTON - Vance Kevin Lightfoot passed away peacefully at his Clinton home Monday, September 5, 2005 following complications from a motorcycle accident. He was born March 14, 1957 to Thomas E. and Eulalie Neville Lightfoot. He grew up in Sunset, Utah and graduated from Clearfield High School in 1975. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served in the Brussels, Belgium Mission. He was married September 14, 1978 to Julie Read Lightfoot. The marriage was solemnized one year later in the Logan temple. They were later divorced but remained good friends. Vance worked in telecommunications for the Davis County School District. In the past, he had also owned and operated his own business, Advance Wire and Telephone. He served in various church callings including scouting and young mens. Vance had a love for music, especially classic rock. He loved riding his motorcycle and going on road trips. His kindness and his great sense of humor will be truly missed. Vance loved his family, his children, and loved being a grandpa to his grandchildren, Eli, Grace and Lincoln. He is survived by his children, Katie Simpson (Joe), Washington Terrace; Kristopher Vance Lightfoot (Stacy), Syracuse; and Keith Emerson Lightfoot, Riverdale. He is also survived by his parents, Thomas and Eulalie Lightfoot (Layton), and his siblings, Vicki Lucas (Alan), Ephraim; Kiele Nelson (Kevin), South Ogden; Kenna Garrett (Phil), Kaysville; half sister, Gayle Williams, Ogden; survived by many nieces and nephews. She was born on May 18, 1935 in Logan, Utah to Roy Edwin Tidwell and Ruth Elaine Cawley. She married Val George Davis on Sept. 27, 1952 in Ogden, Utah. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She is survived by one son and two daughters, Robert Lynn Davis Angela (Patrick) Tehero and Janette Kay Davis. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Dolores was preceded in death by her husband, parents and one nephew. Chapel St. Howard Vale Nichols Friday, September 9, 2005 Howard Vale Nichols, 58, of Honeyville passed away September 6, 2005 at his home after a 3+ year battle with ALS. He was born July 27, 1947 in Prescott, Arizona to Wilbert Howard and Georgianna Jane Koehler Nichols. His father was in the Air Force so they traveled and lived many places until he retired in El Paso, Texas when Howard was in Jr. High School. Howard graduated with a Bachelor degree from UTEP on May 30, 1969 and as an Army officer. He furthered his education by getting a Masters Degree in the Operational Art of War at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in June 1985 and his Associates Degree in Environmental Studies from Salt Lake City Community College in January 1993. He was a great lover of history, did a lot reading, and was very knowledgeable in that area. After graduating from college, he went to Fort Benning for training, then served at Fort Carson, 69th Infantry Brigade (Kansas Nation Guard) and 5 Battalion 10th Infantry and was Recondo Trained. In 1970 he went to Vietnam with B Company 1st Battalion 506th Parachute Infantry, 2st Regiment 1st Division Republic of Vietnam, 3rd Brigade 101st Airborne Division and Taskforce Hamilton. After Vietnam he served at Fort Eustis (twice), Fort Sill, Military Ocean Terminal Bayonne NJ (twice), Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Fort Lee, U.S. Army Korea and U.S. Forces Korea, Fort Leavenworth, Military Ocean Terminal in Felixstowe, England and Headquarter U.S. Forces Europe (Heidelburg, Germany). He retired as a Lt. Colonel in November 1991 and the family went to Ranson, West Virginia for seven months then Grantsville, Utah for three years. They have lived in Honeyville for the past 10 years where he has been active in the V. F. W. of Brigham City, local chapter of DAV., and a member of Legionaires. He was currently serving on the Planning and Zoning Commission and had been chairman for a number of years. He was active in the LDS Church. Howard married Nancy Jean Palmer (deceased) on October 4, 1973 in Provo, Utah.. There were five children born to this marriage. Timothy Howard Nichols (deceased), Samuel Edwin Nichols (Logan, Utah), Benjamin William Nichols (Honeyville), Johnathan Andrew Nichols (Brigham City), Thomas Marion Nichols, (deceased). On April 26, 1980 he married Cleyone Joy Orchard of Carey, Idaho and there were four daughters added to the family; Cholana Jane Nichols (currently serving an LDS mission in the London, England Mission), Tamara Joy Nichols (student at Snow College, Ephraim), Rebekah Joan Nichols (student at BYU-Idaho), and Valerie Janene Fredrickson (Honeyville). He is preceded in death by both parents and his brother, Dale Allen Nichols (Tremonton). He has one sister (Terry Peartree) living in El Paso, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 10, 2005 at the Honeyville 3rd Ward in Honeyville. A viewing will be held at the church on Friday, September 9, 2005 from 6:30 p.m. 8:30 p.m. and one hour prior to services on Saturday, where friends and family may call. Interment will follow at Calls Fort Cemetery in Honeyville. Arrangements by Sereni-Care, Funeral Directors.
