JWGillot CAC ------------------------- July 22, 1937 xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx BA-J/EEL Mrs. William H Marsh William Richardson-W.6629 Beech Park, Greenwood Indiana Dear Madam: Reference is made to your letter in which you request the Revolutionary War record of William Richardson, of Worcester County, Maryland, or Accomac County, Virginia, and the Revolu- tionary War or War of 1812 record of Isaac Trimble, of Rockbridge or Augusta County, Virginia. Because of the great demand for Revolutionary War and War of 1812 data and the limited trained clerical force available for furnishing such information, it is impossible to comply in full with request pertaining to soldiers of those wars. The record of William Richardson is furnished herein, the data for which were obtained from pension claim, W.6629, based upon his military service in the Revolutionary War. William Richardson was born in Accomac County, Virginia. The date of his birth and the names of his parents are not shown. While a resident of said Accomac County, William Richardson enlisted early in the Revolutionary War and marched to the north. It was stated in the application for pension that the soldier served three years in the Virginia troops and was in several battles, no details of service, names of officers, nor names of battles given. It is shown, also, that Bounty Land Warrant, No. 5274, for one hundred acres of land was issued by the state of Virginia for the service of William Richardson as a private for three years in the Continental Line. The soldier married about 1786 in Accomac County, Virginia, Elizabeth Mears. The date and place of her birth and names of her parents are not shown. William Richardson died in December, 1795, and his widow married some years late, James Caruthers, who died about 1830. She said she mar. Jas Caruthers in 1790 which was obviously an error so of course could not use. ------------------------- Elizabeth Caruthers was allowed pension on account of the services of her former husband, William Richardson, on her ap- plication executed September 1, 1851, at which time she was aged eighty years and resided in Accomac County, Virginia. The names of two sons of William Richardson and his wife, Elizabeth are given - Major, the eldest, and William Richardson, Junior. The dates of their birth are not shown. It was stated that James and Elizabeth Caruthers had several children born to them, names of these children are not stated. In order to obtain the date of last payment of pension, the name and address of person paid and possible the date of death of Elizabeth Caruthers, former widow of William Richard- son (W.6629), you should address The Comptroller General, General Accounting Office, Records Division, this city, and cite the following data: Elizabeth Caruthers, former widow of William Richardson Certificate No. 5642 Issued January 17, 1852 Rate $80 per annum Commenced March 4, 1846 Act of February 2, 1846 Virginia (Richmond) Agency. After his death she intermarried with one James Cauruthers with whom he was also well acquainte and neither too much for my comfort, for we were rival suitors to the widow but Cauruthers was the successfull competitor they also lived together as husband and wife and had several children, when Cauruthers her last husband died which was about the year 1830. She is now liveing and his wifow, the aforesaid William Richardson was allways in the neighbourhood considered as a Revolu- -tionary soldier and I fully concur in that opinion, Given under my hand this 3d September 1851 his Zadok X Lewis mark State of Virginia Accomack County SS Be it known that on the 3 day of September 1851 before the subscriber a justice of the peace in and for the said county, duly authorized by Law to administer Oaths, personally appeared before my Zadok Lewis, above named and made Oath that the facts set forth in the above affidavit is just and true, and I further certify that so far as I know or believe hi oath is intitled to full credit and believe and that I have no doubt but his age as set forth by him is correct, And from my now personal Knowledge the said James Cauruthers husband of the said Elizabeth Cauruthers died on or about the year 1830 and that the said widow has never married since the death of said Cauruthers. I further state that I know that said Elizabeth Caruthers is the same person who was the widow of the said William Richardson, having been acquainted with her and both her husbands. Given under my hand the day and year last above written. William P Moore Senr. J. She also recolects that the said William Richardson inlisted as a soldier in the war of the revolution at the same time and she thinks in the same company that her two uncles Stephen and John Moore did, that they all three went to the Month & remained in the Army untill about the close of war, they were in the army I am confidint more than three years, that after William Richard- -son returned home from the war, he intermarried with one Elizabeth Mears, which I think was about the year of 1786 & certainly before 1790, they lived together as husband and wife for seven or eight years when he died his widow Elizabeth Richardson afterwards intermarried with one James Cauruthers and they lived as husband and wife untill his death which was about the year of 1830.
